RevivalTRadiTional Hymns foR ConTempoRaRy ensemblesTony alonso
Take the sung prayer of the assembly to a whole new level with these contem-porary arrangements of some of the best-loved hymn. Revival is a long-over-due resource from Tony Alonso that provides fresh accessible arrangements of classic hymns for contemporary ensembles. Each arrangement is scored for SAB choir, piano, guitar, and optional instrumental parts. These fourteen arrangements are compatible with the versions found in GIA’s most recent
hymnals, each of these arrangements is intended to support and inspire the sung prayer of the assembly. Enhance the final stanza with an alternate harmonization, add a soprano descant or play an instrument verse.

Many moods are established throughout the movements of this work. Each movement incorporates different techniques from contrapuntal to modern. The flute part is lyrical and accessible while the keyboard provides a solid foundation. This work is a must-have for any pastoral setting in need of short interludes or meditations.

Notes
—Tony Alonso
This octavo is part of a larger collection called Revival, a series of traditional hymn arrangements for contemporary ensembles intended to lead and inspire the singing of the liturgical assembly. Each hymn in the collection is arranged for SAB voices with an optional alternate harmonization of the accompaniment and a soprano descant for the final stanza; however, the final stanza also appears in the SAB texture to accommodate occasions when rehearsal time is limited or simplicity desired. The optional instrumental parts can enhance these arrangements in fresh ways, particularly on feasts and special occasions. When these are used, the pianist may wish to simplify the piano parts to leave space for these instruments to shine, particularly on introductions and interludes.
There are, of course, multiple variations of familiar hymn texts (even within a single Christian denomination) based on a range of theological commitments and traditions. For the sake of simplicity, I have used the texts most common in the primary hymnals of the publisher of this collection. However, I encourage leaders to edit the language in these editions to agree with the version most familiar to the assembly.

All 13 Christmas Pieces
on this spreadare available as a
Sampler PacketThat’s a $30.00 Value
for ONLY $12.00!g-9045
Walton Music (www.waltonmusic.com) publishes some of the greatest choral works of the 20th and 21st centuries. Here are some of Walton Music’s finest sacred titles for the Advent and Christmas seasons.
Sacred Music for Advent & Christmas
NEWLY ENGRAVED!Still, Still, StillNorman Luboff
Is it possible that some choirs have never sung this arrangement of the beloved Austrian carol? This is a must for every choir to add to its rep-ertoire. It’s perhaps the most popular octavo in the distinguished Walton catalog.
W3003 $2.25
The Darkest Midnight in DecemberStephen Main
This award-winning composition uses the deli-cate celesta (optional piano) to set the mood for this Christmas carol message. A joy for singers and listeners alike! This new and important addition to the Christmas repertoire has also been scored for SSAA voices.
WW1416 $2.05
The Glory of the FatherEgil Hovland
An all-time favorite on the well-known bibli-cal text from the Prologue to John’s Gospel. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more musical or prayerful way to begin your Christmas pro-gram or liturgy. A flowing chant-like passage bookends the middle choral section.
W2973 $2.10
The Holly and the IvyOla Gjeilo
Here’s another quality setting from Gjeilo’s Christmas Carols Volume 2. This superb, fresh setting will bring out the very best in your choir. Accessible ranges and simple divisi make this joyous arrangement suitable for choirs will-ing to work a little harder.
WW1491 $2.35
The Holly and the IvyStephen Main
“The Holly and the Ivy” is an old carol with an even older text that shows both Christian and pagan influences. (Holly has been associated with the winter solstice since Druid times). The setting includes solos for alto and tenor. The accompaniment may also be played on harp.
WW1532 $2.25
Wonderful Peace (Jul, Jul Stralande Jul) Dan Davison
This new edition of a true treasure and a faith-ful Swedish favorite for the Christmas season is a beautiful celebration of the joyous warmth that marks the Yuletide. The original melody and choral parts are by Gustaf Nordqvist. Sing it a cappella, or with piano or organ, or with a string quartet accompaniment. However per-formed, the joyful message remains bringing wonderful peace to the holidays.
WW1408 $2.10
In the Bleak MidwinterPat Messick
Christina Rosetti’s poem is set for two-part treble chorus, which starts out in unison and later divides. Suitable for women’s voices or children. Here’s proof that Walton and GIA are committed to providing quality texts and music for children’s choirs.
W5044 $2.40
Mary Had a BabyMaria Thompson Corley
Starting with a soprano solo or small group of singers, the text and vocal textures become more emphatic as the piece progresses. The setting of this traditional spiritual comes to an end by quoting another spiritual—“Go, Tell It on the Mountain.” A wonderful piece to help develop lyric singing with young choristers.
WLG137 $1.90
A La Nanita NanaDan Davison
This is a versatile two-part arrangement of a Spanish carol. Ideal for children’s choir, smaller adult choirs, or larger choirs in need of easily learned quality music during the hectic holiday season. Parts for guitar and violins help create an authentic Spanish sound. The text appears in Spanish.
WW1351 $2.25 Away in a MangerPaul T. Sjolund
This setting was originally written for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir but is appropriate for choirs of any size.
WW1023 $2.10
Gloria in ExcelsisAntonio Lucio Vivaldi
Mason Martens’ edition of Vivaldi’s ever-loved Gloria has long been the jewel of the Walton catalog. This is the joyous opening movement, and the piece is a fine choice for anytime in the Christmas season. Latin and English texts. Also available for SAB, SSA, TTBB.
W2043 $2.25
Lo How a Rose E’er BloomingJan Sandström
This setting of this well-known melody has long been a favorite among accomplished choirs. Swedish composer Jan Sandström bases his composition on the music by Michael Praetorius, juxtaposing a smaller SATB choir with the larger SSAATTBB group. Are you blest with a reverberant worship space? This magnificent, ethereal piece would be perfect for you.
WSK120 $2.60
O Holy NightGary Fry
Gary Fry’s powerful and imaginative treatment of this familiar Christmas classic will move choirs and audiences alike. Can be performed with piano or synthesizer. Optional orchestral parts are available from the arranger. A great choice for holiday concerts.

Honey from tHe rockentrance and communion antiPHonS for tHe cHurcH year
m. roGer Holland, ii“Inspiring” doesn’t begin to describe the excitement that Roger Holland’s music creates among singers and worshipers alike. These antiphons taken from the 2010 Roman Missal are paired with psalm verses in varied musical styles accessible by congregations of any denomination. Lyric ballads, spirituals, and gospel songs all lend their influence to Holland’s original compositions, some reflective, some brightly up-tempo. Whether you use these marvelous pieces on the appointed day in the liturgy or as stand-alone anthems anytime during the year, they will rouse your people in their praise and worship!

CHeCK ouT ouR neW seRies foR smalleR CHoiRssimple gifTs CHoRal seRies Simple Gifts is a series for smaller adult choirs. Primarily unison, two-part equal or mixed, or SAB voicing, the music in this series is easily learned, of easy to moderate difficulty, yet still makes an im-pression. The works in this series are not watered down versions of SATB music. The harmonic tex-tures are intentionally chosen to suit the nature of the work.
This series will allow choirs to build a library of music that can be used during those times when quick preparation and performance is necessary. While geared toward smaller choirs, larger groups will want to use this music too. It is perfect for a summer pick-up choir or for the beginning of the choir season.
For a growing list of titles in this new series visit www.giamusic.com/simplegifts

RICHARD PROULX LEGACY SERIESPrior to his death, Richard Proulx made arrangements with Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, for the establishment of the Richard Proulx Collection in the university’s Alcuin Library. The collection contains hundreds of Proulx’s manuscripts, the majority of which were written for his weekly work at Holy Name Cathedral.
Select pieces from this collection will be made available by GIA Publications, Inc. in the Richard Proulx Legacy Series. GIA is also committed to releasing a number of revised editions of Proulx’s compositions, ensuring that choirs and congregations will sing his music for many years to come.

Notes
This arrangement of “Joy to the World” was written in 1976 as the last movement of A Christmas Triptych, a set of three carols that also included “O Come, All Ye Faithful” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” The work was written at the request of Cal Stepan for use with the St. Dominic Choir of Shaker Heights, Ohio, as well as a community chorus Stepan directed.
Proulx described this setting as a “Handel-ian romp,” ending with a sly quotation of “Hallelujah” from Messiah. Stanzas 2 and 3 of the original hymn have been combined into a choral fugue, which may be sung unaccompanied, or doubled by the strings or organ.
Richard Proulx (1937–2010) enjoyed a distinguished career as an organist and a conductor, as well as the composer or editor of nearly 400 published works. After serving congregations in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Seattle, Washington, Proulx directed an exemplary music program at Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral from 1980 until 1994.
Prior to his death, Proulx and Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, made arrangements for the establishment of the Richard Proulx Collection in the university’s Alcuin Library.
