SCUBA QuestProject Idea By: Ryan Horbal

What if you could search for underwater treasure without getting wet?

SCUBA QuestSCUBA Quest is puzzle/adventure side scrolling type game that allows the player to search for hidden treasure while learning a little about SCUBA diving. The main goal of each level is to find and salvage the sunken wreckage while trying collect the hidden treasure chests in the level. Each level will have a hidden artifact that takes upgrades to get.

The game will be played like Yoda Stories created by LucasArts. It is a game that follows a story and the player needs to have certain items to advance that story.

SCUBA Quest cont.• The game will start out with the player not having any equipment and only being

able to free dive(hold their breath). The levels will be very small at this point in the game

• Each level the player will have to collect different items to help them find and collect the treasure chests, rare artifacts and salvage the sunken ships. Each level will be a maze like area that the player must navigate around while making sure they do not run out of air. As the game progresses, the player will be able to purchase upgrades to their gear that allows them to stay under longer which means the levels will be larger in size.

• Each chest will tell the player a little history about the sunken ship that they are trying to salvage at the end of the level. After the level is completed the player will be asked a few SCUBA/Sunken Ship questions and if they get them right they gain more money.

• When the player finds the sunken wreckage, they will have a mini game to see how well they can salvage the wreckage. The better the salvage the more rewards.

Game Play• The initial game will have between 4-6 playable levels

not including a tutorial section. • The game should take about 45 minutes to an hour

and a half to compete.• If players obtain all the achievements and hidden

items, the game will take longer.

Controls• The game will have easy to use controls. The controllers will be the keyboard and the mouse.

• WASD keys will be used to move the player around the screen.• The I key will be used to access the inventory of the

player.• The Space Bar will but used to “Use” different items

the player has selected.

Page 6: Ryan horbal scuba_quest

Controls cont.• The mouse will be used to aim your tranquilizer gun at

certain organisms.• The Left button will be to shoot your tranquilizer gun.• The Right button will be to collect the specimen.• When players have the inventory open the mouse will also be used as a cursor so they player can choose what they want to equip or look at. In this case the left button will select the object they are hovering over.

UpgradesThe player will have the options to upgrade their gear like Jetpack Joyride. After each level the player will be able to upgrade their gear as long as they have the funds for it. Some upgrades will be:• Better fins that will make you swim faster• A metal detector to point the way if you are close to the treasure• Spear gun for protection• Different tank sizes for more air• Different air mixtures(Oxygen vs. Nitrox) for increased air• Upgraded regulator(Rebreather) for increased air• And even propulsion vehicles

Page 8: Ryan horbal scuba_quest

Levels• Each level will consist of an area that ranges in size.

The higher the level the more area there is in each level. There will be mazes of coral reefs that block the player, large fish that the player needs to move around or kill, areas with stronger currents, and tall sea grass that can tangle the player if they try to swim through it without the proper upgrades.• Some levels will allow the player to search inside the

sunken wreck to find even more treasure.

Level Example (SS THISTLEGORM)

This image shows the player starting the level. Their Air and Health are 100%. The depth gauge is at 38ft and it is in yellow because the player has not upgraded his certification level yet which means they can only go to 60ft without losing health. The shark can be shot with the tranquilizer gun and collected for further research or can be bypassed if the player is fast enough.

Level Example cont. (SS THISTLEGORM)

This image shows the player is at 105ft and it is in the red meaning they will be losing health. Their Health is down to 70% and their air is at 75% and yellow. There is a SCUBA tank that the player can collect which will give them more air. The player also found the treasure chest containing information about the Thistlegorm. This information will be useful in the next challenge. The deeper the player dives, the more air they will consume. The water also is a darker shade of blue showing there are deeper.

Level Example cont. (SS THISTLEGORM)

This image is showing the Trivia Challenge after the player finds the wreckage. There will be a certain amount of questions asked on each wreck and the more the player gets right the more money and gear they will receive.

Other Features• The game will contain real information about SCUBA diving as well

as the wrecks that are featured in the game. • After each wreckage is salvaged the player will read information

about it. • I want to have an achievement system that allows players to have

a longer play experience even if they completed all the levels. • Example: Players can collect fish to add to their log book. Each fish they

shoot(tranquilize) they have the chance to collect to “study”.• The level map will show the player where the different wrecks are

located. The player will be able to choose where they want to dive but they might not have the right equipment to complete the level.

Page 14: Ryan horbal scuba_quest

Risks• The risks will be creating levels that get more and

more challenging the higher up they go. • Making the game look aesthetically pleasing will be

another big risk. SCUBA diving is beautiful and I want to pass that beauty to the players.• Another big risk is the air feature in the game. This

will have to be tested again and again to make sure it allows the players enough time to complete the level as well as make it difficult.
