WELCOME

IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF FLATVILLE is located in East Central Illinois and began in 1872 when immigrants from East Friesia (Ostfriesland), Germany, settled in Champaign County, Illinois. The immigrants drained the swamp land and began to farm the rich soil. The first services of Immanuel were held in the Maple Grove School, two miles west and a fraction of a mile south of Flatville. The first church was built in 1874 when five acres of land in Flatville was designated for the church. The present church structure was built in 1914 to accommodate the growing congregation. Immanuel was given the name “the mother church”, as a number of neighboring Lutheran congregations grew from it. The German heritage was central to the Flatville community. Church services were conducted in German until 1939 when the transition to both English and German services began. This continued until 1962. Today Immanuel is part of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) with James T. Lehmann as its Pastor. Immanuel is known for its strong tradition and support of missions which began in 1881. It is also known as the “Cathedral in the Cornfield” due to its rural location. EMMONS LUTHERAN CHURCH is in Emmons, Minnesota directly south of the Twin Cities right on the border of Minnesota and Iowa. The history of Emmons Lutheran Church can be traced back to Norwegian immigrants in 1858. On March 25, 1902, the church was incorporated with 80 members holding service on Main Street with Pastor Ostby. The current church on Pearl Street was built in 1959, with first services and dedication taking place in 1960. To pay off debt of the new church building, Pastor Docken suggested to have a Lutefisk Supper. This began an annual tradition that continues today held on the 2nd Tuesday of November. In 2012 Emmons Lutheran Church joined the North American Lutheran Church. Worship Service is currently held at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday’s followed by Sunday School and Fellowship. Soon to be Pastor Henkel will serve as their 14th pastor since 1902. ORDINATION AUTHORIZATION has been granted by the authority of the Bishop of the North American Lutheran Church, Dan Selbo, to Rev. James T. Lehmann, STS to ordain Ryan Matthew Henkel into the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. A SPECIAL THANKS from the ordinand to his family and friends who joined in this joyous celebration, and the Clergy, Council, Staff, and the Congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church who have graciously allowed for this space to be used for this special event. CELEBRATION OF THE RITE OF ORDINATION May 17, 2020

THE PRELUDE *BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P In the name of the Father, and of the ✠ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom

no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if

we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection and self-examination. P Most merciful God, C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have

sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

P Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ✠ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

*ENTRANCE HYMN – “I, the Lord of Sea and Sky” *APOSTOLIC GREETING

P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C And also with you.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

P Let us pray,

Almighty and merciful God, you built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and you instituted the office of the holy ministry so that the apostolic and prophetic Word might be heard throughout the ages. Grant that Ryan Matthew, now to be ordained, may exercise his ministry faithfully in the power of your Spirit; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen FIRST LESSON – Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Page 7: RYAN MATTHEW HENKEL...Ryan Matthew, now to be ordained, may exercise his ministry faithfully in the power of your Spirit; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen FIRST LESSON

7

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”

PSALM – Psalm 91 Psalm by Amy Schifrin

He who dwells in the shelter of | the Most High,* abides under the shadow of | the Almighty. He shall say to the Lord, "You are my refuge | and my stronghold,* my God in whom I | put my trust." He shall deliver you from the snare | of the hunter* and from the | deadly pestilence. He shall cover you with his pinions, and you shall find refuge un- | der his wings;* his faithfulness shall be a | shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of any ter- | ror by night,* nor of the arrow that | flies by day; of the plague that stalks | in the darkness,* nor of the sickness that lays | waste at midday. A thousand shall fall at your side and ten thousand at | your right hand,* but it shall | not come near you. Your eyes have only | to behold* to see the reward | of the wicked. Because you have made the | Lord your refuge,* and the Most High your | habitation, there shall no evil hap- | pen to you,* neither shall any plague come | near your dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge | over you,* to keep you in | all your ways. They shall bear you | in their hands,* lest you dash your foot a- | gainst a stone. You shall tread upon the li- | on and the adder;* you shall trample the young lion and the serpent un- | der your feet. Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I de- | liver him;* I will protect him, because he | knows my name. He shall call upon me, and I will | answer him;* I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring | him to honor. With long life will I sat- | isfy him,* and show him | my salvation.

Glory to the Father, and | to the Son,* and to the | Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginn- | ing is now* and will be forev- | er. Amen.

SECOND LESSON – 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

*GOSPEL – Matthew 16:13-19

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapter.

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

P The Gospel of the Lord.

SERMON – Rev. James Lehmann, STS *HYMN OF THE DAY – “O God Send Heralds” THE RITE OF ORDINATION *THE PRESENTATION OF THE ORDINAND

Wilma Suits: I present for ordination to the Holy Ministry of Word and Sacrament, Ryan Matthew Henkel, who has been prepared, examined, and certified for this ministry and who has been called by the Church to the office of Pastor.

C Thanks be to God. P According to apostolic usage you are now to be set apart to the office of

Word and Sacrament in the one holy catholic Church by the laying on of hands and by prayer. Our Lord Jesus Christ says: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:21-23) And again: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20) St. Paul writes: I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

THE EXAMINATION P Before almighty God, to whom you must give account, and in the presence

of this congregation, I ask: Will you assume this office, believing that the Church’s call is God’s call to the ministry of Word and Sacrament?

℞ I will, and I ask God to help me. P The Church in which you are to be ordained confesses that the Holy

Scriptures are the Word of God and are the norm of faith and life. We accept, teach, and confess the Apostles’, the Nicene, and the Athanasian Creeds. We also acknowledge the Lutheran Confessions as true witnesses and faithful expositions of the Holy Scriptures. Will you therefore preach and teach in accordance with the Holy Scriptures and these creeds and confessions?

℞ I will, and I ask God to help me. P Will you be diligent in your study of the Holy Scriptures and in your use of

the means of grace? Will you pray for God’s people, nourish them with the Word and Holy Sacraments, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living?

Page 10: RYAN MATTHEW HENKEL...Ryan Matthew, now to be ordained, may exercise his ministry faithfully in the power of your Spirit; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen FIRST LESSON

10

℞ I will, and I ask God to help me. P Will you give faithful witness in the world, that God’s love may be known

in all that you do? ℞ I will, and I ask God to help me. P Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously

give you the strength and compassion to perform them. C Amen

*THE PRAYERS A Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people

according to their needs. A For the holy catholic Church, that it may be filled with truth and love and by your

grace be found without fault at the last day: Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A For all members of the Church, that they may serve you in true and godly lives:

Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A For Daniel, our bishop, and for all those responsible for the care and nurture of

your people: Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A For Ryan Matthew, chosen to be a pastor in the Church, that he may faithfully

fulfill the duties of this ministry, serve your people, build up your Church, and glorify your name: Lord, in your mercy,

C hear our prayer. A For the peace of the Church, that our divisions may be overcome and that we may

serve the world as one people in one Lord Jesus Christ: Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A For the peace of the world, that a spirit of respect and understanding may grow

among nations and peoples: Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, the lonely, the forgotten, and all who suffer;

for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected: Lord, in your mercy,

C hear our prayer. A For the glorious company of all the saints, those who have died in faith and those

who live in certain hope, we praise you. That their witness may give us courage until the day of Jesus Christ: Lord, in your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your

mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen.

*THE HYMN AT THE ORDINATION – “Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire” P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give him thanks and praise. P Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father, we bless you for your infinite love in

Christ our Lord, in whom we have redemption and forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace. We thank you that by his death your Son has overcome death and, having been raised by your mighty power, has ascended far above all

11

the heavens, that he might fill all things. We praise you that Christ has poured out his gifts abundantly on the Church, making some apostles, some prophets, some pastors and teachers, to equip your people for their work of ministry for building up the body of Christ.

The minister lays both hands on the head of the ordinand. Other clergy may impose their right hands. P Eternal God, through your Son, Jesus Christ, pour out your Holy Spirit upon Ryan

Matthew and fill him with the gifts of grace for the ministry of Word and Sacrament.

Following the laying on of hands the ordinand remains kneeling. P Bless his proclamation of your Word and administration of your Sacraments, O

Lord, so that your Church may be gathered for praise and strengthened for service. Make him a faithful pastor, patient teacher, wise counselor. Grant that in all things he may serve without reproach, that your people may be renewed, and your name be glorified in the Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.

℞ Amen. The newly ordained may remain kneeling. A stole and chasuble are placed over his shoulders as the minister says: P Receive this stole as a sign of your work, and walk in obedience to the Lord Jesus,

serving his people and remembering his promise: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

P Receive this chasuble, the vestment of priesthood which signifies charity; for God is able to advance you in charity and in perfection remembering “above all these things put on charity, which is bond of perfectness.” (Colossians 3:14)

The newly ordained stands; the minister addresses him: P “Strive for righteous, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the

good fight of the faith.” (1 Timothy 6:11-12) “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you guardians, to feed the Church of the Lord which he obtained with his own blood.” (Acts 20:28) “Tend the flock of God that is your charge, not by constraint but willingly, not for shameful gain but eagerly, not domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd is manifested you will obtain the unfading crown of glory.” (1 Peter 5:2-4) “This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.” (1 Corinthians 4:1-2)

P Care for God’s people bear their burdens and do not betray their confidence. So, discipline yourself in life and teaching that you preserve the truth, giving no

12

occasion for false security or illusory hope. Witness faithfully in word and deed to all people. Give and receive comfort as you serve within the Church. And be of good courage, for God has called you, and your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

The newly ordained may kneel for the blessing: P The God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the

great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.

C Amen The minister and newly ordained turn to face the congregation. P Will you, assembled as the people of God and speaking for the whole Church,

receive Ryan Matthew as a messenger of Jesus Christ sent to serve God’s people with the Gospel of hope and salvation? Will you regard him as a servant of Christ?

C We will. P Will you pray for him, help and honor him for his work’s sake,

and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Christ? C We will. P Let it be acclaimed that Ryan Matthew is ordained a minister in the Church of

Christ. He has Christ’s authority to preach the Word and administer the Sacraments, serving God’s people.

C Amen. Thanks be to God. The congregation may offer acclamation with applause.

*THE SOLEMN BLESSING

P May God, who founded His Church upon the Apostles, bless you through the prayers of all His saints.

C Amen. P May God inspire you to follow the example of the Apostles and give witness to

the truth before all people. C Amen. P The teaching of the Apostles has strengthened your faith. May their prayers lead

you to your true and eternal home. C Amen. P May almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son ✠ and the Holy Spirit. C Amen.
