Pan-European low cost carrier Ry-anair must sell most of its shares in Irish rival Aer Lingus, Britain’s com-petition authority has ruled, but Europe’s dominant budget airline has rejected the ruling and intends to appeal. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK said Ryanair must cut its stake in Aer Lingus from 29.8% to 5%.
The drama comes soon after the Irish government decided to sell its 25% stake in Aer Lingus to the International Airlines Group (IAG), owners of British Airways and Iberia.
Ryanair spokesman Robin Kiely said the decision is “ridiculous”, adding that it would appeal the ruling to the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
“Today’s CMA decision rejecting Ry-anair’s request to review its order to divest Ryanair’s 29.8% minor-ity stake in Aer Lingus is manifestly wrong and flies in the face of the current IAG offer for Aer Lingus,” Kiely argued.
Simon Polito, chairman of the CMA inquiry, said: “IAG’s bid for Aer Lin-gus is dependent on securing Ry-anair’s agreement to sell its share-holding. This recent development illustrates that Ryanair can decide whether a bid for its major com-petitor on UK/Irish routes succeeds or fails.
“This concern was an important part of our decision to require Ry-anair to reduce its shareholding. It’s not good for competition when one company holds such an influence over the future of one of its major competitors,” Polito continued.
In response, Ryanair has implied that Si-mon Polito and “his group” were unable to establish any con-sumer harm arising from Ryanair’s minor-ity stake in Aer Lingus
and instead “resorted to speculat-ing” (in the CMA’s August 2013 report) that Ryanair’s 29.8% share-holding would deter other airlines from merging with or bidding for Aer Lingus.

“IAG’s current offer for Aer Lingus proves that the CMA’s invented theory of harm was hopelessly wrong, and is now unsustainable given that the circumstances have manifestly changed, and accordingly the divestment rem-edy must be revoked in light of this compelling
evidence,” Kiely stated.
Ryanair has instructed its lawyers to appeal the decision to the UK Competition Appeal Tri-bunal, saying that it is “factually unsustainable and legally flawed” as the IAG offer for Aer
Lingus proceeds. In parallel, Ryanair’s lawyers are currently seeking permission to appeal the unsustainable 2013 report to the UK Supreme Court.

5 billion gallons of jet fuel saved
Aviation Partners announced that as of June 5th, 2015, its unique Blended Winglet Technol-ogy has saved the worlds commercial and business jet operators an estimated five billion gallons of jet fuel. This represents a global reduction in CO2 emissions of over 107 billion lbs (or almost 54 million tons.) Aviation Partners-designed winglets are now flying on more than 6,100 individual jet airplanes, and more than 20 airplane types worldwide. API’s blended winglets are additions to the airplane wing that are significantly more efficient than stand-ard wing tips. The winglets reduce the drag caused by wingtip vortices, the twin tornados formed by the difference between the pressure on the upper surface of an airplane’s wing and that on the lower surface. By reducing drag, blended winglets increase fuel efficiency and boost range. The blended winglets, which feature a large radius and smooth chord varia-tion in the wing-to-winglet transition area, have demonstrated more than 60% greater effec-tiveness over conventional winglets with an angular transition. One of the unique features of API’s technology is that it can be retrofitted to existing in-service aircraft to increase their productivity. Aviation Partners’ latest design, Split Scimitar Winglets, recently certified for the Boeing 737 NG family, are already flying on over 500 aircraft and are now standard equipment on the BBJ. This revolutionary new design builds on the existing blended winglets technology to provide further incremental fuel savings. API and APB are studying additional airframe development programs for blended winglets and Split Scimitar Winglets, as well as radical new winglet technologies for the future.

Rolls-Royce and Liebherr-Aerospace create power gearbox joint venture
Rolls-Royce and Liebherr-Aerospace have agreed to establish a 50:50 joint venture to develop manufacturing capability and capacity for the power gearbox for Rolls-Royce’s new UltraFan engine. UltraFan, a geared design, is based on technology that could be ready for service from 2025, and will offer at least 25% improvement in fuel burn com-pared with the first generation of Rolls-Royce Trent engines. The power gearbox will enable the UltraFan to deliver efficient power over a range of take-off thrusts for high-bypass ratio engines of the future. For the highest thrust engines, each single gearbox will be capable of handling the equivalent horsepower produced by more than 500 fam-ily cars. The joint venture, located in Friedrichshafen, will provide production engineer-ing for the power gear drive train components. The manufacturing of the components will initially be done in existing Liebherr facilities. As production volumes increase, the joint venture will look at options for creating a standalone manufacturing infrastructure. Rolls-Royce will continue to lead the design definition and design integration of the power gearbox, as well as the testing activities.
