Measuring wind-noise performance

Wind-noise reduction is difficult to characterise - the figure depends upon many factors including frequency, the type and size of microphone used, and even the wind itself.

Rycote is known for making realistic measurements and quoting honest, conservative results.

The figures given here - attenuation @ 100Hz - are the result of tests using a Schoeps CMC641 microphone under laboratory conditions.

Made of Hytrel, the Lyre suspensions are virtually unbreakable, and since they do not use any elastic or rubber components never need replacing or re-threading.

Modular Windshield & WindjammerWindshield Rating: MAX

Designed to provide excellent wind-noise attenuation with minimal high-frequency loss, the Modular Windshield is a light-weight, durable basket design, offering 37dB (100Hz)* wind-noise attenuation when used on its own - without a Windjammer.

First introduced by Rycote in 1987, the Windjammer is a high-quality synthetic fur cover, designed to fit perfectly over the Modular Windshield to give an additional 13dB (100Hz) of wind noise attenuation. Achieving a total of 50dB (100Hz)* wind-noise attenuation with little high-frequency loss, the Windjammer al-lows for an excellent standard of audio recordings even in very high wind conditions.

Baby Ball GagWindshield Rating: MAX

Designed to slip directly onto the body of a microphone, Baby Ball Gags (BBG) use basket windshield techniques to give much better wind-noise performance and acoustic transparency than a foam-style windshield. Windjammer covers are also available to fit the BBGs for maximum wind protection. The mics can then be shock-mounted with a Lyre suspension, making them suitable for low-profile boom applications as well as for hand-held operations and interviews.

The Ball Gag consists of two halves that can be separated to fit microphones

with a ball-head or tapered body (max head diameter: 60mm;max body diameter: 25mm)

and are also widely used with ORTF or NOS microphone pairs.

Lyre suspension

Including a Softie windshield, Lyre shock-mount, Pistol-Grip handle and 40cm Mogami cable, the Softie Kit provides a simple, robust and cost-effective windshielding and shock-mounting solution for the tough environment of modern day ENG and location recording.

The Softie Windshield is a slip-on, cavity foam windshield with integral fur cover. Designed to offer up to 36dB (100Hz)* wind-noise attenuation with very little high-frequency loss, the Softie has now become a world-wide standard in the broadcast industry.

The Softie Lyre Mount is a complete shock-mount using the patented Lyre system to provide isolation against handling and cable-borne noises. The holding clip accepts microphones from 19 to 25mm diameter and features a moulded-in soft-feel grip to prevent the microphone from slipping or twisting. The Pistol-Grip can also be fitted on a boom-pole thanks to an integrated 3/8” thread adaptor.

To work effectively, a slip-on windshield must cover all the ports of the mic. Please choose the windshield size accordingly (a 12cm slip-on windshield being suitable for a shotgun mic with slots no further than 12cm from the front of the mic).

The diameter of the microphone is also key, as the fit must be tight to achieve a good seal. Softie windshields come in two diameter fittings, Standard (19-22 mm) and Large (24-25 mm).

The Softie Lyre Mount with Camera Clamp Adaptor (CCA) allows you to attach a shotgun or rifle microphone to camcorders fitted with a microphone clamp (25 to 27mm diameter) or a boom-pole with 3/8” thread.

The clip is designed to hold shotgun microphones from 19 to 25mm in diameter, included the flat-barrelled Sennheiser MKH range. A “soft-feel” grip is moulded into the clip to prevent the microphone from twisting or slipping.

Suitable for many Sony & Canon models, the Softie Lyre Mount uses the patented Lyre technology and provides excellent isolation against lens motor vibrations and general handling noise.

Using a cavity foam core covered by a thin acoustic foam outer skin, these fun slip-on windshields offer 36 dB (100Hz)* of wind-noise reduction with far less adverse effect on high-frequency sounds than with a standard foam windshield. The foam has been specifically engineered for Rycote and is extremely resistant to UV and moisture damage, giving these windshields great longevity.

InVision™ Universal Studio MountShock Rating: MAX

The InVision™ Studio, or Universal Studio Mount (USM), is the latest addition to the Rycote InVision range of microphone shock-mounts, and is designed to accommodate any large-diaphragm side-address microphone from 18 to 55 mm in diameter.

Using the patented Lyre technology, the USM can offer up to 12dB better attenuation of unwanted vibrations – that’s four times in terms of sound pressure level – compared to many conventional “cat’s cradle” elasticated microphone mounts. Stand and cable-borne noise just disappears.

Made of Hytrel, the Lyres are virtually indestructible; and as the USM uses no elastics, it will never sag or need re-threading.

The InVision™ Studio Kit is a complete suspension and pop filter system, which combines the Universal Studio Mount (USM) with a new Universal Pop Filter to make a complete vocal microphone suspension and pop filter system that will accommodate virtually any microphone.

The InVision™ Video Mount is a versatile microphone shockmount for use with video cameras, camcorders, booms and mic stands. Using the patented Lyre technology, the InVision Video Mount provides excellent isolation from vibrations caused by handling and camera motors.

The clamp is designed to hold microphones from 19 to 25mm diameter, and also features a “soft-feel” grip moulded into the clip to prevent any twisting or slipping of the microphone.

Engineered exclusively for Rycote, this high quality foam is resistant to the damaging effects of moisture and UV light.

Lavalier Foam Windshields are available to fit a wide range of personal microphones, with Mini Lavalier Foams being used for the smallest models of microphones

Designed for use with Lavalier microphones worn on the outside of clothing, the Lavalier Windjammer™ (or Furry) is the most heavy-duty of Rycote’s windshields for personal microphones.

Suitable for use in windy outdoor interview conditions, the Lavalier Windjammer greatly reduces microphone noise and clothes rustle, while also providing up to 15dB wind-noise attenuation.

Produced in a range of black, grey, and white as standard, other colours are also available on request to allow you to select the right match for your chosen piece of clothing.

Stickies are double-sided adhesive pads, used to affix personal mi-crophones directly onto the skin and clothing, or even musical in-struments and furniture. The pads are sandwiched with a soft fab-ric to prevent the mount from creaking when the mic is attached. The materials used are hypoallergenic and the adhesive does not transfer to clothes, polished surfaces or microphone grilles.

Place the Stickie onto skin or piece of clothing.

Peel the upper layer of the Stickie.

UndercoversWindshield Rating: LOW

Undercovers have been specifically designed for use with personal mics under clothing. Using Stickies to affix the microphone, a soft fabric disc is then added on top to minimise the sounds of clothing rustle and low wind noise.

Undercover packs contain Stickies and fabric discs; they are available in white, grey and black colours.

Place the Lavalier mic onto the Stickie. Place the soft fabric disc over the Lavalier mic and Stickie. Your microphone is ready to use!

Overcovers have been specifically designed for use with small personal microphones in windy outdoor conditions. Using stickies to affix the Lavalier Mic onto the skin or on top of clothing, a fur cover is then fitted on top of the Lavalier microphone for excellent wind-noise protection.

Overcover packs contain 30 Stickies and 6 re-usable fur discs, including 2 of each colour: white, grey & black.

Place the furry disc onto the Lavalier mic and Stickie.Your microphone is ready to use!

Aluminium & Carbon FibreBoom Poles

Rycote now offers a range of Aluminium and Carbon Fibre Boom Poles. From 2.50m long, 5-section Boom Poles, available as coiled or non-coiled, to shorter 3-section Boom Poles, Rycote Boom Poles are the first choice for professionals.

Featuring the same lightweight patented triple-cam ‘grip and twist’ locking system as the original A5 poles, and with no metal parts to add to their weight, the new G3 and G5 combine lightweight construction with great tensile strength. As on the A3 and A5, the locking mechanism is designed to be resistant to jamming when the pole is dirty; however, if necessary, the locking collars can be completely stripped down for cleaning in the field if required.
