FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK Last Monday we celebrated the 88th Anniversary of the dedication of Saint Thomas Aquinas Church as
the Cathedral. Some of you are aware that when this church was planned, it was initially to be called Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Back in 1907, we were under the Diocese of Sacramento. Bishop Thomas Grace dedicated the corner stone and foundation for the new St. Peter and Paul church on July 28, 1907 but a few days later he recommended that the name be changed to St. Thomas Aquinas, in recognition of Reno being the home of the University of Nevada and Thomas Aquinas being the patron saint of universities. Henceforth our parish was deemed St. Thomas Aquinas Church. On August 19, 1931, Thomas K. Gorman, the first bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Reno, dedicated Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral. Last Monday, we offered our usual 12:10 PM Mass in honor of the anniversary of dedication & prayed for all those who have formed and supported the Cathedral over these many decades, on whose shoulders we stand.
I am often asked what the difference between a church and a cathedral is; many people think it is its size or age. Neither of those are a factor. A cathedral is the church or seat of the bishop of the diocese in which it exists. At Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral, as one faces the altar from the pews, the chair of the bishop, known as the cathedra, can be seen to the left side under a simple wooden canopy. The cathedral is often called the “mother church” of the diocese because the bishop sits as the pastor of the cathedral and the chief shepherd of all the parishes.
One of the gifts at our Cathedral is the beautiful copper doors at the front of the church, greeting all who enter off Second Street with the images of solemn angels. Recently the doors got polished, compliments of one of our parish disciples, Stephen Trebaol. Many thanks, Stephen, for that tedious labor of love in the summer heat for our church! Say a little prayer for Stephen & all those who help around the church in simple and big ways to keep the place safe, clean and looking nice.
An ordained ministry dedicated to the service of the people is the diaconate. Last year the Diocese of Reno began a new formation class for men feeling called to the diaconate. Don Walls, a parishioner of the Cathedral, is among that class. The men and their wives are a part of the formation process, in recognition that marriage is their first vocation. Last Sunday these men took an important step in declaring “candidacy”. The Rite of Candidacy is the first formal step in the process toward ordination when the bishop receives the formal announcement from these men that they intend to study to become deacons for the Diocese of Reno. This took place at a ceremony during their beginning-of-the year retreat at Our Lady of the Snows Parish. Congratulations, Don & Claudia! Let us keep them in our prayer, along with all those on the journey toward diaconate.
We are in the process of growing our altar server roster. This is a wonderful way for our youth to be in-volved in the parish and in the Mass. I remember it being a wonderful introduction to parish community life and the Mass when I was a child. If your child has received her or his First Communion & regularly attends Mass, it would be wonderful to see his or her involvement in this ministry. Please do consider it. At this point we do not have enough youth to serve at every Mass, and I am grateful for the adults who do this in addition to their sacristan duties. It would be a great witness to have all our youth involved in ministry in the parish, whether as altar server or in some other way. Some of our newly confirmed teens will be teaching our younger children in our religious ed program this year. It is always edifying to see our youth involved and I’m grateful to them and to their family support. Blessings to you all this 21st Week in Ordinary time!
DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE CHUCK El Lunes pasado celebramos el 88 Aniversario de la dedicación de la parroquia de Santo Tomás de Aquino
como Catedral. Algunos de ustedes sabrán que inicialmente esta iglesia iba a ser llamada Iglesia Católica de San Pedro y Pablo. En 1907 estábamos bajo la Diócesis de Sacramento. El obispo Thomas Grace dedicó la piedra angular y los cimientos de la nueva iglesia de San Pedro y Pablo el 28 de Julio de 1907, pero unos días más tarde recomendó que el nombre se cambiara a Santo Tomás de Aquino, en reconocimiento a que Reno era el hogar de la Universidad de Nevada y Tomás Aquino el patrón de las universidades. Desde entonces, nuestra parroquia fue considerada la Iglesia de Santo Tomás de Aquino. El 19 de Agosto de 1931, Thomas K. Gorman, el primer obispo de la recién formada Diócesis de Reno, dedicó la Catedral de Santo Tomás de Aquino. El Lu-nes pasado ofrecimos nuestra Misa habitual de las 12:10 PM en honor al aniversario de la dedicación y oramos por todos aquellos que han formado y apoyado a la Catedral a lo largo de todas estas décadas, sobre cuyos hombros nos sostenemos el día de hoy.
A menudo me preguntan cuál es la diferencia entre una iglesia y una catedral; mucha gente piensa que tiene que ver con su tamaño o edad. Ninguno de estos dos puntos es un factor. Una catedral es la iglesia o sede del obispo de la diócesis en la que existe. En la catedral de Santo Tomás de Aquino, si está mirando el altar de frente, la silla del obispo, conocida como la catedra, se puede ver a lado izquierdo bajo una simple cortina de madera. La catedral es a menudo llamada la "iglesia madre" de la diócesis porque el obispo se sienta como el pastor de la catedral y el pastor principal de todas las parroquias.
Uno de los regalos en nuestra Catedral son las hermosas puertas de cobre al frente de la iglesia, saludando a todos los que entran por la Calle Segunda con las imágenes de ángeles solemnes. Un ministerio dedicado al servicio del pueblo es el diaconado. El año pasado, la Diócesis de Reno comenzó una nueva clase de formación para los hombres que se sienten llamados al diaconado. Don Walls, feligrés de la Catedral, está en esa clase. Los hombres y sus esposas son parte del proceso de formación, en reconoci-miento de que el matrimonio es su primera vocación. El Domingo pasado estos hombres dieron un paso impor-tante en la declaración de "candidatura". El Rito de la Candidatura es el primer paso formal en el proceso hacia la ordenación cuando el Señor obispo recibe el anuncio formal de estos hombres que tienen la intención de es-tudiar para ordenarse diáconos de la Diócesis de Reno. Esto tuvo lugar en una ceremonia durante su retiro de principios de año en la Parroquia de Nuestra Sra. de las Nieves. ¡Felicidades Don y Claudia! Mantengámoslos en nuestras oraciones, junto con todos los que están en el camino hacia el diaconado.
Estamos en el proceso de hacer crecer nuestra lista de monaguillos. Esta es una manera maravillosa de que nuestros jóvenes participen en la parroquia y en la Misa. Recuerdo que fue una extraordinaria introducción a la vida comunitaria parroquial y al Misa cuando yo era un niño. Si su hijo(a) ya recibió su Primera Comunión y asiste a Misa regularmente, sería estupendo ver su participación en este ministerio. Por favor, considérelo. Por el momento no tenemos suficientes jóvenes para cada Misa, y estoy muy agradecido por los adultos que hacen este ministerio además de sus deberes de sacristán. Sería un gran testimonio tener a todos nuestros jóvenes involucrados en un ministerio en la parroquia, ya sea como monaguillos o de alguna otra manera. Este año, algunos de nuestros adolescentes recién confirmados enseñarán a los niños más pequeños en nuestro progra-ma de educación religiosa. Siempre es edificante ver a nuestros jóvenes involucrados y les agradezco a ellos y a sus familias por el apoyo.
