Be part of the action these school holidays with hands-on learning experiences at amazing locations along Randwick’s spectacular coastline. You’ll go sea kayaking and bird watching, learn to care for our local bushlands and how to keep safe in the surf, explore rockpools and discover the wonderful world of whales.

Adventure level ratings:Activities have been rated as a guide only. Please come prepared with sunscreen, hat, long sleeve top, water bottle and closed footwear for walking, water-based activities and rockpool rambles.• Minimum age for all water-based activities is 8 years old• Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or

adult guardian.

Sit & relaxGet comfortable and settle in for some great talks.

Easy Suitable for most fit and active adults and children to enjoy.

ModerateSome exertion required in walking, paddling or swimming.

ChallengingNot for the faint hearted, some physical challenge is likely, including, walking, entering a boat from the water, paddling for extended periods, swimming or snorkelling.

WEDNESDAY 18 APRIL

Sea Kayaking at Yarra Bay BeachTimes: 8.30am – 9.30am

Cost: $10 per person Age: 8yrs and above

Learn the latest paddling techniques from the experts while enjoying the more secluded waters off Yarra Bay Beach. Yarra Bay has a south-westerly orientation, making it unique among Sydney beaches.

Meet on the beach, in front of Yarra Bay Sailing Club, 67-69 Yarra Rd, Phillip Bay.

Bushcare at Lake MalabarTime: 1pm – 2.30pm Cost: $5 per person Age: 8yrs and above

Where is Lake Malabar? Why not find out by joining our local friendly Bushcare group who are restoring the natural environment at this secluded location. Our expert horticulturists will help you discover the unique plant species that grow in the area, find local fauna, identify weeds and learn how to collect seeds for propagation. Best of all, you’ll meet a whole new group of dedicated and bush-caring friends. Hat, gloves, natural insect repellent and lunch included.

Rockpool Ramble at South MaroubraTime: 2pm – 4pm Cost: $5 per person Age: 5yrs and above

Discover the rarely seen marine animals on the rock platforms and inter-tidal zone at the far south end of Maroubra Beach. As the ocean retreats it leaves an abundant array of sea creatures on display which our marine biologists will identify and discuss; helping us learn how to minimise our impacts on these fragile beings.

Wear closed-in shoes, sunhat, long sleeve top and bring a water bottle (NO THONGS).

Meet at South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club 1 R Marine Pde Arthur Byrne Reserve, Maroubra.

THURSDAY 19 APRIL

A Discovery of Coastal Birds Time: 8.30am – 10.30am Cost: $5 per person Age: 8yrs and above

A fun exploration of the beautiful birds of our area with BirdLife educator Renée Ferster Levy.

From waterbirds to bush birds and some high in the sky, we hope to see lots of activity – calling, feeding, wading, chasing… maybe even nesting! Learn to identify birds by sight and sound, and find out how we can enhance our local habitats to help them.

Wear closed-in shoes, sunhat and long sleeve top. Bring raincoat (if needed) and water bottle. Binoculars are optional.

Meet at South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club 1 R Marine Pde Arthur Byrne Reserve, Maroubra.

The Wonderful World of Whales Time: 11am – 12pm Cost: $5 per person Age: 5yrs and above

Calling all whale lovers and budding marine biologists. Explore the wonderful world of whales with local marine biologist Georgina Wood as we move closer to the seasonal whale migration in May. Hear about the whale species you’ll be seeing along our unique coastline and learn and hear their special whale songs. Listen up as there’s great ocean prizes to WIN! Light refreshments are provided.

FRIDAY 20 APRIL

Under the Sea (touch tank & talk) Time: 9.30am - 10.30am Cost: $5 per person Age: 5yrs and above

Get ready to get wet (and smelly!) with marine biologist Vanessa Guillermo.

Under the Sea showcases the incredible animals that live under the waves and on our shores. We’ll investigate habitats and learn how sea animals adapt to the changing environment. Children can hold and touch a large range of marine animals, specimen samples and a variety of marine artefacts and shells.

Backyard Bugs Time: 11am – 12pm Cost: $5 per person Age: 5yrs and above

Focusing in on the world of mini beasts, we delve into the secret lives of our often well camouflaged backyard bugs. We’ll find out their amazing abilities and the role they play in the environment. The show is totally interactive, allowing children to hold and touch many different bugs in a safe and exciting way. So get ready for a lot of laughing and screaming!

Dr Rip’s Science of the Surf talk (with dye release rip identification demonstration) Time: 1pm – 2.30pm Cost: $5 per person Age: 8yrs and above

Are you interested in how beaches work? Do you know how to spot rip currents and how to get out of one? Do you know how waves form and break? What’s a safe wave and an unsafe wave? Why are some beaches safer than others? How will your beach be affected by climate change? Why is rock fishing the most dangerous sport in Australia?

Keep safe in the surf and understand your favourite beach better by learning how to “read” the conditions of the beach and surf by attending this informative and entertaining presentation. Six randomly chosen attendees will receive a free copy of Dr Rip’s Essential Beach Book.

All children under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adults accompanying children need to pay for the activity.
