Abstract: Preservatives: Why and How Joseph Dallal, L.C., M.Sc. Sr. Mgr. Technical Services, Ashland Specialty Ingredients (formerly ISP) Everyone knows we use preservatives in products, but why do we need them, how do we decide which ones to use, how do we know if they work, and how can we be sure they will work when we need them. There are plenty of preservatives out there, but there are also a plethora of formulation types. Creative Formulation Chemists and Marketers are inventing creative ways to integrate oils and waters as well as sticking things into interfaces and between micelles which create havoc in the world of restrained water and nutrient rich environments for organisms to thrive. Not only does the Formulator have to choose a preservative that holds the organisms at bay, but it has to work in the environment that was created. Not only does pH, type of emulsifier and emulsion, level and kind of oil phase, amount of ‘available’ water, and temperature of addition become paramount, but now Regulatory issues of various countries come into play (who allows what, and what part of the body will be in contact). We will look at categories of formulation bases and their relationship to organisms and preservative choices. For those of you who haven’t seen what it takes to challenge the preservative system (and wonder why it takes so long, and you have to pay), I’ll take you through a PET scenario, and analyze the reported results. Who do I expect to profit from this discussion: Formulating Chemists (Skin, Hair, Other), Lab Managers, Microbiologists, Marketing, Consultants, Contract Manufacturers, Plant Engineers, and College Students. Preparatory Questions (that you want me to cover) and Follow‐Up questions can be sent to [email protected]
Speaker Bio: Tiffany Collis SCC STL Chapter Treasurer 2012 Tiffany Collis is employed at Chemisphere Corporation as a Regulatory and Safety Manager. She received her BS degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Minnesota, and received her MS degree in Safety and Emergency Management from the University of Eastern Kentucky. She started her career in 1997 doing stability testing on personal care products. Since then she has worked in quality control labs, personal care research and development labs, and finally in the regulatory department where she currently resides

Abstract: Authoring OSHA’s GHS Compliant Safety Data Sheets Tiffany Collis Regulatory and Safety Manager, Chemisphere Corporation On March 26th, 2012 OSHA published the revised Hazard Communication Program to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The GHS provides standardized definitions for chemical hazards. Companies will be required to provide a label and safety data sheet (sds) that includes specifically defined signal words, pictograms, hazard statements, and precautionary statements for each defined hazard class and category. Join us in an interactive talk as we walk through the hazard definitions for a specific cosmetic formulation, and create an OSHA compliant SDS and label from scratch.

Countdown to SCC National 2013 Annual
Scientific Seminar
in ST. LOUIS:
261 Days Thank you!
Abstract: Targeted Genome Editing in Eukaryotic Systems Henry George R&D Manager Cell Sciences and Development Group/SAFC Sigma-Aldrich Company St. Louis, MO Rational genome engineering in mammalian cells is of enormous potential across basic research, drug‐discovery as well as cell‐based medicines. Zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs) are a class of engineered DNA binding proteins that facilitate targeted editing of the genome by creating double‐ strand breaks at user‐specified locations. Within these chimeric proteins the DNA binding specificity of the zinc finger protein determines the site of nuclease action. Such engineered ZFNs are able to recognize and bind to a specified locus and evoke a double‐strand break in the targeted DNA with high efficiency and base‐pair precision. The cell then employs the natural DNA repair processes of either homology‐directed repair or non‐homologous end joining to heal the targeted break. These two pathways provide the investigator with the ability to provoke three unique outcomes in genome editing – gene correction, gene deletion and targeted gene addition. Furthermore, the speed and efficiency of this process enables us to knockout multiple genes in the same cell. I will discuss the development of several Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell lines with modifications in specific genes of interest. These new CHO cell lines will enable faster clonal selection methods, and will possess more robust growth, productivity, and product quality characteristics. With the use of ZFN’s, several genetic loci can be altered in the same cell line. These cell lines can lead to economic benefits to the biopharmaceutical manufacturer by producing better quality products more quickly and efficiently.
Speaker Bio: Dan Reus Founder of Openly Disruptive
Dan Reus is Founder and Chief Instigator of Openly Disruptive, where they mash‐up technology, commerce and culture get hands‐on with the future. He started Openly Disruptive after experiencing first‐hand how difficult it is for people, organizations and communities to act on innovation. Equally comfortable in the workshop, lab, conference room and on the street, Dan has worked in manufacturing, entertainment, marketing and product development. He has helped Fortune 100 companies and start‐ups alike uncover and connect stakeholders to the ideas that drive their future success, and he is active in the St. Louis PDMA chapter, where he leads content and presentations for Product Camp, an annual un‐conference for product development and management professionals. Since starting Openly Disruptive, Dan and the OD team have helped audiences explore topics as varied as gamification, open source manufacturing, DIY biotech, music made in space and new investment models through workshops, group projects, webcasts and private consulting.
Abstract: Growing a Disruptive Innovation Culture Dan Reus Founder of Openly Disruptive Disruptive Innovation both threatens and enables our success.
