In our First Reading the people worship an idol, but Moses’ prayer saves them from the Lord’s punish-ment. A Reading from the Book of Exodus (32:7-14).

The Lord said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I com-manded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacri-ficed to it, and said, `These are your gods, O Is-rael, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’” The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation.”

But Moses implored the Lord his God, and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, `It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disas-ter on your people. In our Second Reading Paul gives thanks to the Lord Jesus and praise to God for the salvation of sin-ners, among whom Paul has led the way. A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to Timothy (1:12-17).

I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful

and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I re-ceived mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, mak-ing me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Gradual Hymn 423Immortal, invisible, God only wise

The Gospel: Luke 15:1-10 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

All the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. And the Pharisees and

the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fel-low welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

So he told them this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wil-derness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, `Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who re-pents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

“Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep

the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, `Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” The Gospel of the Lord. We believe in one God, the Father, the Al-mighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Be-ing with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Vir-gin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he as-cended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his king-dom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowl-edge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.tHe PrayerS Of tHe PeOPle Lector: As Moses implored the Lord when he saw the error of his people, so make us to be in-

tercessors, seeking mercy for all who court disas-ter and those who act in ignorance. People: Have mercy upon us according to your loving-kindness. Lector: You took Paul captive for your own purpose, putting his sins behind and making him useful to your Church; so turn us from unprofit-able ways to fresh paths, that we may glorify you in our day: People: Wash me from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin. Lector: Because without you we are not able to please you, grant that your Holy Spirit may direct and rule the hearts of the faithful remem-bering especially our lay leaders, laity, and all who call upon you from this parish: People: For behold, you look for truth deep within me. Lector: We intercede for the men and wom-en of our armed forces, and especially for those in harm’s way. Surround them with sure signs of your presence, and with sustaining hope: People: Make them hear again of joy and gladness. Lector: Tend the sick, Lord Christ, and com-fort the dying, especially those for whom our prayers are now offered (the people may offer their petitions). Grant them the peace and confidence found only in your tender care. People: Make the body you have broken to rejoice. Lector: Welcome us all to your table, O God, and seek after us as the shepherd sought after all his sheep; that we may be found rejoicing in you, and you in us: Create in me a clean heart, and re new a right spirit within me. Lector: You are the ruler of the ages; immor-tal, invisible, God only wise; to whom be honor and glory forever and ever. People: Amen and Amen.

Celebrant: Let us Pray.People: Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacra-ment of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

tHe rectOr SearcH Prayer

Almighty and everliving God, the Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, send forth your Holy Spirit to guide the Search Commit-tee, Vestry and parish family of St. Francis in the Valley, to be of one heart and mind in our search for a rector who will be your faithful servant and who will minister to your flock.

By your light O Lord, draw to us those with vision and passion for St. Francis’ future.

Guide them as they discern your call. Raise up for us a faithful pastor, a dynamic preacher of your Gospel, to shepherd us as your flock, strengthen our ministries, and work with us in building up your kingdom.

May we strive to be your heart and hands in our Parish and be a light of love to all. Amen.
