Side by side, these two submarines mooredoff Brady Island on the Houston Ship Channelrepresent two different eras of submarining. Inthe foreground is the World War II vintagesub, the U.S.S. CABRILLO, long used by NavalReserve submarine personnel for training andnow destined as a memorial undersea craft inGalveston. Taking the CABRILLO’s place for train-ing purposes is the U.S.S. CAVALLA, a moremodern submarine which has an external andinternal layout similar to present day nuclearsubmarines.

One of the newest members of Houston’sworld trade community is George Van Haght, anative South African who recently was ap-pointed assistant vice president of South AfricanMarine Corporation of New York (Safmarine)and assigned to the Port of Houston as llaisonofficer between the firm’s New York headquartersand its Gulf agents, Hansen and Tideman, Inc.Van Haght is a veteran Safmarine employeeof 17 years, previously having worked in per-sonnel and as a buyer in the freight sales divi-sion of the company. He says he is looking for-ward to the mid-August arrival in Houston ofSafmarine’s newly launched, 511-foot S.A. CON-STANTIA on its maiden voyage.

The Orient Overseas Line’s newest vessel, the 12,000 ton M/V LINGYUNG, was in Houston last month on its maiden voyage and was thesite of a gala welcoming celebration arranged by Lone Star Shipping Co.,agents for the Line. Capt. M. Y. Stone, representative of Orient OverseasLine with headquarters in New York, was on hand, and many Houstoniansrecognized another old friend in the new ship’s master, Capt. S. Y.
