Financial Update

We would like to say a big thank you toeveryone who has made arrangementsto change their method of giving to ourchurches to help us through this difficulttime. A big thank you also to those atChrist Church who have increased theirgiving in response to the Lent appeal, itis making a significant difference inhelping us to pay our bills and to keepgoing. At Emmanuel some members who donot pay through the bank have beensending cheques to Carl, some have setup Standing Orders and both of theseare a great help. Unfortunately the lossof rental income is having an impact andwe have to thank Audrey Vickery for hergenerous donation to us in 2017 whichwill enable us to keep going for thepresent time. At Christ Church we are very grateful toSarah who has been able to continuepaying Pre-school rent to the end of theterm. Our overall income is only a littledown on expectations at the moment. The only area which is under seriouspressure is the Family Ministry fundingwhere a large donation a few years agohas now run out. Any regular donationsto help keep this valuable work goingwould be greatly appreciated. We havebeen able to save costs in some areas butgetting licences and equipment for on-line services and live streaming in futurehas added some extra.  The work of churches through thispandemic is particularly important insupporting all of us and you areprobably hearing that more and morepeople are listening to online servicesand Christian content. God works inmysterious ways and he certainly seemsto be working to bring some good out ofthis difficult time.

...and some good environmental news! Thank you to Barry & Glenys for sharing ‘whatmight have been’ for your family this year('Connected' Issue 7, 3rd May). We feel yourdisappointment, but I love the way you have seenGod at work in your garden and neighbourhood. It got me thinking about lock-down and notbeing able to travel to see family and friends. Butwait, our inability to jump in cars or fly across theworld  seems to be helping our planet to healitself! The seas and rivers are cleaner, there is farless air pollution, the hole in the ozone layer issmaller,  hedgehogs and other small mammalsare increasing again. It seems God is showing us how things can bedifferent. But can we change forever, or will werush back into how our lives were? I pray that wecan learn from this, as we go back to that otherlife.

Some good financial news... Emmanuel received a very generous gift of£2,000 (two thousand pounds) from JoyceSindrey, a long-time church member who died inDecember 2019, via her daughter Gillian Mileswho lives in the state of Victoria, Australia. Gilliansays that due to, "A most cautious stategovernment," they are firmly confined to a Stage3 lockdown!

Thank you to those who have sent in articles forinclusion in Connected. As there will be no June/July edition of Link Magazine, more personalcontributions are especially welcome. Theyhelp us all to stay connected - hence the title!Email your articles, ideally just a few sentencesplease, to the church office and I'll do my bestto include them. Also a BIG thank you to Dina, Felicity, Jane &Dave and Sandra & Dave who have kindlyoffered to deliver a total of 23 weekly sheets topeople without computers. In this way, evenmore of us are staying connected!

More Coffee, anyone?

V.E. Day ReactionsIn our street we put up theflags, bunting and balloons andwe marked the day with anAfternoon Tea at the end ofour drives and a Toast at 3pm.We delivered scones to all ourneighbours. We then spent thewhole afternoon/eveningtogether...at a distance... andconcluded by standing to listento the Queen via a speakerprovided by a neighbour andjoining in with the Nationsinging 'We'll meet again'.

All 22 residents of our road gathered together tomark the anniversary - as closely as regulationsallow - with tables and chairs, and have a greatparty together. The weather was perfect. Buntingwas strung across the houses and flags were muchin evidence and posters and other war memorabiliadisplayed. I was fifteen years old at the end of thewar and can remember VE Day quite well. A friendand I went into a nearby bomb-damaged schooland tugged on the bell rope. It made such a noisethat we quickly scarpered!
