Schramm, Inc., the leading manufacturer and global

supplier of land based, mobile hydraulic drills is proud to announce the launch of GEOCASE™ combined with Schramm T450GT track mounted rigs that are typically used in high production geothermal and water well drilling applications.

GEOCASE™ is a patent pending casing rotator system that allows the driller to place casing and drill pipe simultaneously without stopping to change equipment set up. It features a rotary drive table fixed to a sliding mast feed system. Utilizing the tilting top head function, the casing is loaded into the rotary drive for easy installation.

The sliding mast provides the feed force which advances 6 or 8 inch steel casing through unconsolidated overburden formations including heaving sands, gravel and glacial till. Cuttings are routed through a discharge swivel and sent to a cyclone to control placement of the drilled material. Upon completion of the casing installation, drilling continues until reaching target depth.

With the T450GT track rig and GEOCASE™ combination, simultaneous installation of casing

is simplified, with less equipment on site, thereby significantly lowering operating costs.

Once casing placement is completed,

epthschramm service supports Marcellus shale play

Reports from the natural gas industry state that the USA has decades of natural gas hidden deep in the shale formations of the Marcellus Shale in

Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and New York.

The competitive nature of the drilling industry has now created cash penalties for contractors with downtime that can start in as little as 4 hours. Penalties can be in excess of $10,000 per day.

Service support goes deeper than just parts and people. Meeting ever changing safety and environmental regulations is a major requirement of appropriate drill sites in the Marcellus. Schramm service technicians are all MSHA Part 48 trained. They are equipped with appropriate personal protection safety gear including fall protection and Fire Retardant (FR Rated) clothing. Trucks are

equipped with materials to address oil spills encountered in servicing the rigs. Schramm also has rigs currently operating with biodegradable hydraulic oils that can minimize environmental impact of major spills should they occur.

At a factory level, Schramm service personnel drive positive change through their on site experience and customer feedback. Service technicians generate Engineering Change Requests (ECR) that stimulate significant incremental improvements to Schramm rigs. As a recent example, the cartridge style 3,000 psi rated fluid swivel currently used on Schramm T130XD, TXD, and T200XD TelemastTM rigs was driven by field experience and customer feedback. Based on additional input, this swivel is now available in a 5,000 psi version at customer request. Product improvements like this increase productivity, reduce maintenance cost and increase safety.

If you would like to know more about biodegradable fluids, high pressure fluid swivels available for Schramm rigs or any other service issue or information, please email [email protected]. For additional sales, service and authorized dealer contacts, please visit www.schramminc.com.

In the meantime, be on the lookout for Jeff and Phil. They are coming to your location soon. g

Drilling rigs Built on a Foundation of Engineering skill & a reliable partnership

Setting yourself apart from the competition is considered good

business strategy in the industrial mobile market. Establishing yourself as innovative, technology-driven and unconventional can put you miles ahead of the pack.

From the high altitudes of Chile’s Andes Mountains, to the Brazilian rain forests, to the rugged terrain of Senegal, Africa, Schramm drilling rigs can end up 1,000 miles from the nearest supply chain. Designing and building drilling rigs that are equipped with the highest degree of reliability ensures that an end-user won’t have component failure or freeze-up while drilling.

Schramm stays grounded in its efforts to design only real-world, practical innovations that quickly translate into cost savings, efficiency and ease of

operation for the end-user. Not only do they demand the highest level of reliability from their drilling rigs, but also from the vendors who support them, Schramm’s vendors must be innovative thinkers, use cutting-edge technology and apply unconventional methods to solve challenges quickly.

For mobile equipment content such as sensors and controls, Schramm only has to look five miles east to the global sensors and controls company ifm efector inc. (Exton, PA). ifm has worked with Schramm for more than five years and supplies them with hardened PlC controllers, pressure and temperature sensors and input/output devices for their air-CONTROl® system. ifm designs their mobile controls to withstand the severe environments in

which drilling rigs must perform. Controls are encased in robust, completely sealed housings that resist high levels of shock, vibration, electro-magnetic interference and temperature extremes.

In today’s world of short-lived business relationships and lowest-bid sales agreements, Schramm and ifm efector exhibit the perfect balance of mutual trust and respect between customer and vendor. g

• Made in Pennsylvania rigs are capable of drilling top holes, intermediate casing holes and in some locations complete TD holes, both vertical and directional.

• Schramm’s multi-million dollar parts inventory is a short ½ day drive from any drilling site.

• A fleet of service trucks and trained technicians committed to 24/7 support are strategically placed across Pennsylvania .

• Drill crew training is a key

component of every new rig sold. All rig start-ups couple classroom training with yard rig-up training, followed by actual well drilling and hole completion support.

• Schramm service technicians are committed to the Marcellus region to insure the fastest possible parts and service response. Jeff Roten covers the western sector. Phil

Delazio covers the eastern sector.

• Schramm has parts and service

support through its existing

dealer network. In the Pennsylvania

Marcellus territory, Schramm is

supported by Center Rock in

Berlin, PA. Center Rock is expanding

their parts inventory and service

capabilities at a dramatic pace

to meet demanding market

requirements. Schramm factory

parts inventory provides additional

reinforcement.

• Schramm is currently expanding its

field service fleet with the addition

of two new service trucks dedicated

to Marcellus, complete with the tools

and parts needed to support typical

service emergencies encountered in

the field. Roten & Delazio’s teams will

be there when you need them with

parts in hand to reduce rig downtime

by as much as 90 percent. This can

save the driller thousands of dollars

per event.

• Schramm dealer and factory service

technicians provide real time training

and technical reinforcement with

every service call. Increased rig crew

knowledge enhances operator safety,

efficiency and production. For example,

drillers are now more familiar with

Schramm’s “Drill Back Valve” that allows

them to drill up through a collared hole

versus using rapid feed to try and pull

through the collared area.Continued on page 3

Two of the more expensive components of your portable

drill rig are the diesel engine and the air compressor. Both of these components are constructed of large rotating masses that depend on low friction bearings to turn freely. Bearing life is shortened significantly when there is exposure to contaminants such as Silica particles, or other abrasive solids that are by-products of the drilling process. This is why a good air induction maintenance program is one of the critical requirements for the life of these components. Air cleaners and all of the components that make up the air induction system should be inspected at every oil change interval.

The air cleaner assembly itself consists of many different components that should net you the cleanest possible air for your engine and compressor. At the air cleaner opening there is a grille that prevents any large debris from entering. The air then travels to the bottom of the assembly and is lifted through a series of tubes called the pre-cleaner. This path allows the heavier solids to drop from the air stream to the Dust pan. On the bottom of the dust pan is a Vacuator™ Valve that will allow the dust pan to drop all solids when the rig is shut off. When the rig is running, negative pressure on the inside of the unit (a vacuum) will pull the vacuator™ valve to a closed position

that will prevent foreign matter from entering.

The air now enters the upper chamber that houses the primary and secondary Filter Elements. These elements have seals at both ends so that they seal at the air cleaner housing and to the center stud and retaining nut. These are the prime dirt stoppers in your air induction system and have now provided the cleanest possible air for your engine and compressor. The air cleaner assembly is fitted with a restriction Indicator to help warn you of the performance of the air cleaner assembly. The safety element has a condition indicator on the retaining nut. Once the green dot disappears the element must be replaced.

After the air has been filtered it must be carried to its destination via a combination of hard piping and rubber hosing. The rubber hosing is typically fastened to the piping with worm drive or T-lock type clamps. When performing your air cleaner inspections it is important to observe all hosing for cracks. These rubber elements are manufactured to withstand ultra-violet light and extreme climatic conditions for long periods of time. But not forever! The retaining clamps should be inspected for proper tension that will seal the rubber to the piping. An

over tightened clamp may cut the hose, and a loose or defective clamp will not properly seal the hose. Some piping may be of a welded construction, and these welds should be inspected for cracks. There is no value in having a great filtering system if contaminants are allowed to enter downstream.

• Remove and clean the dust cap and pre-cleaner tubes• Examine the vacuator valve for condition and proper operation• Remove & replace the primary filter element (Clean and inspect seals and sealing surfaces)• Remove & replace the secondary filter element as required. NOTE: The secondary element is typically changed at second maintenance interval. (Clean and inspect seals and sealing surfaces)• Examine and reset the restriction indicator as necessary• Inspect all hoses and piping for leaks and/or cracks. Replace as needed.

• Check all clamps for tightness

To review; your air induction maintenance program should include the following important actions:

Hosting a two day school June 7th & 8th in Elko, Nevada that focused on the gold mining industry and reverse circulation drilling, Schramm struck gold. With gold approaching the $2,000 mark, drilling contractors although working feverously 24/7, took time out to send personnel to this school. like all 24/7 drilling operations, maintenance is critical to optimize equipment performance, equipment

operating life and operator safety. For those who say “We don’t have the time,” these companies said ”We can’t afford not to attend.”

After Elko, it was on to Antofagasta, Chile. This northern Chilean mining region focuses on copper and gold exploration, and mining is buzzing there. Here two 3-day schools were held on July 14th-16th and July 18th-20th for over 100 people across all disciplines. The school was held in Spanish with the support of Sebastian Morales, Technical Support Manager from Schramm’s dealer Exploration Drill Masters in Santiago, Chile. Matt Starkweather from Schramm’s factory Field Technical Support Team also played a key role.

The South Atlantic Well Driller’s Association’s Annual Jubilee held July 30th –August 1st in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was perfect for Schramm training classes that focused on the geothermal and water well drilling industries. Alan James, Schramm’s Factory Technical Support Specialist held multiple classes in Fundamentals of Hydraulic Tophead Rotary Drill Rigs, Drill Rig Maintenance, Drill Rig Safety, and Compressor Operation and Controls. Qualifying for Continuing education Credits, these classes drew over 200 people. A special event for the show was a presentation by Frank Gabriel, Schramm’s VP of Sales on the Chilean Mine Rescue in 2010. Frank spoke to a packed house on the events leading up to the successful rescue and the role of Schramm equipment and personnel, as well as other key players involved in this amazing feat.

As of this writing, a three day school is also underway in lima, Peru with over 150 registrants. This Spanish language school is coupled with the Perumin Mining Show in Arequipa, Peru.

Schramm’s semi-annual three day factory service school will be held November 8th – 10th at the corporate facility in West Chester, Pennsylvania. This training program, like all Schramm training events, is free of charge and open to everyone.

Who should attend? Drillers, drilling superintendents, tool pushers, mechanics, helpers, even CEO’s.
