YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Let the Church be your visible face in the world.
Send your spirit so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary,
Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father
and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
Amen.
Adapted from the prayer penned by Pope Francis.

Excerpt from the Summary of the USCCB (U.S. Cath-olic Conference of Bishops) Document: FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP (a guide for Catholics on how to vote) What Public Policies Should Concern Catholics Most? As Catholics, we are led to raise questions about political life other than those that concentrate on individual, ma-terial well-being. We focus more broadly on what protects or threatens the dignity of every human life. Catholic teaching challenges voters and candidates, citizens and elected officials, to consider the moral and ethical dimen-sions of public policy issues. In light of ethical principles, we bishops offer the following policy goals that we hope will guide Catholics as they form their consciences and reflect on the moral dimensions of their public choices: a) Address the preeminent requirement to protect human life—by restricting and bringing to an end the destruction of unborn children through abortion and providing women in crisis pregnancies with the supports they need. End the following practices: the use of euthanasia and assisted suicide to deal with the burdens of illness and disability; the destruction of human embryos in the name of re-search; the use of the death penalty to combat crime; and the imprudent resort to war to address international dis-putes. • b) Protect the fundamental understanding of marriage as the life-long and faithful union of one man and one woman as the central institution of society; promote the complementarity of the sexes and reject false “gender” ideologies; provide better support for family life morally, socially, and economically, so that our nation helps parents raise their children with respect for life, sound moral values, and an ethic of stewardship and responsibility.• c) Achieve comprehensive immigration reform that of-fers a path to citizenship, treats immigrant workers fair-ly, prevents the separation of families, maintains the in-tegrity of our borders, respects the rule of law, and ad-dresses the factors that compel people to leave their own countries. • d) Help families and children overcome poverty and ensure access to and choice in education, as well as de-cent work at fair, living wages and adequate assistance for the vulnerable in our nation, while also helping to over-come widespread hunger and poverty around the world, especially in the policy areas of development assistance, debt relief, and international trade. • e) Ensure full conscience protection and religious free-dom for individuals and groups to meet social needs, and so enable families, community groups, economic struc-tures, and government to work together to overcome pov-erty, pursue the common good, and care for creation. • f) Provide health care while respecting human life, hu-man dignity, and religious freedom in our health care sys-tem. • Continue to oppose policies that reflect racism, hostility toward immigrants, religious bigotry, and other forms of unjust discrimination. • g) Establish and comply with moral limits on the use of military force—examining for what purposes it may be used, under what authority, and at what human cost— with a special view to seeking a responsible and effective response for ending the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East and other parts of the world. • Join with others around the world to pursue peace, protect human rights and religious liberty, and advance economic justice and care for creation.

PRAYER OF ST. GIANNA BERETTA MOLLA You, Lord Jesus, were for Gianna a splendid example. She learned to recognize you in the beauty of nature. As she was questioning her choice of vocation, she went in search of you and the best way to serve you. Through her married love she became a sign of Your love for the Church and for humanity. Like you, the Good Samaritan, she cared for everyone Who was sick, small or weak. Following your example, Out of love she gave herself entirely. Generating new life. AMEN
Lectio Divina: is a form of prayer using Sacred Scripture. It is a four step process, using Scripture as its basis to get to know our Lord in a more profound way. It is a process that was developed by St. Benedict and can be used in individual prayer or in a group.
4 STEPS: READ, MEDITATE, PRAY, CONTEMPLATE
BEGIN WITH A PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT: Come Holy Spirit, illuminate my mind, open my heart so I can encounter in your Word Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life…..Help me follow today, the call of Christ in a new way, according to your word. And let me be for all in the world, one who is sent by the Lord, let me be a brother/sister, let me be a friend, let me be a disciple of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
STEP 1: READ: What does the Biblical Text Say? At the most basic level: What is going on in this Scriptural passage? You have to identify a WORD, PHRASE, IDEA that touches your heart….that the Lord places in your heart….. FIRST READING: read the text out loud slowly and intentionally. REFLECTION: take several minutes to reflect on the reading and allow the Holy Spirit to surface a WORD, A PHRASE, AN IDEA/CONCEPT that is central to the meaning of the text for you (What is the Biblical text saying?). INTERNALIZE: repeat the word or phrase either out loud or in your heart.
STEP 2: MEDITATE: What is Jesus saying to me personally through this Scripture Text? What does God want me to know or see through this Scripture Text. How does this text speak to my experience in life? SECOND READING: read the same passage again. MEDITATION: take several minutes to reflect on the question: What is Jesus saying to me personally through this Scripture Text?
STEP 3: PRAY: My Lord has spoken to me in the Scriptural Text: What do I want to say back to him in Prayer? THIRD READING: may want to re-read the same passage again. REFLECTION: Jesus has spoken to me personally in this Scriptural text. What do I want to say to my Lord in Prayer? PRAYER: say your prayer to our Lord either out loud or interiorly.
STEP 4: CONTEMPLATE / ACT: As a result of my prayer, what is Jesus calling me to DO (this week) as a result of this process? Finally, our prayer calls us to action ultimately to be more compassionate and faithful. CONTEMPLATE: on what our Lord is calling you to do as a result of this process.
4 PASOS: LEER, MEDITAR, ORAR, CONTEMPLAR
