Heaven is for Real

Heaven is the “pearl of great price” that we would spend everything to obtain. It requires the absolutetotal investment of our lives. Sell everything and sacrifice all pains to appreciate the meaning of this

truth. There is nothing on earth that compares with heaven; no treasure on earth is worth losing heaven.

God made us to be happy with Him in heaven; He made us for Himself alone. Seek Him with our wholeheart, our whole mind and our whole soul. And how do we attain heaven – give God our heart, soul and

strength – willing to sacrifice everything in this life.

Pleasure is not happiness. It’s wrong to think that “if it makes me feel good, it must be ok.” Pleasurefor the moment passes quickly, but true happiness and joy comes from living according to God’s plan.

Real joy involves sacrifice, and sometimes hardships and testing.

God made us for a purpose, seek out that purpose and fulfill it the best we can. Happiness and joy willcome when we’re doing the right things. Help others. Seek wisdom, seek the “pearl of great price”

– seek out the kingdom of God

PASTOR´S MESSAGE

Please take the time to read the following letter from our Florida catholic Bishops regarding the plight of homeless refugee and migrant children and youth entering intothe United States. This social tragedy has many causes and is very difficult to try to

solve. It is clear that we cannot have totally porous national borders that could erode our nationalsecurity and possibly cause social harm. It is also true that a myriad of social, political and economicissues are all involved in this complex human dilemma. From the perspective of so many hopelessand impoverished, however, the United States represents hope and the possibility of a new life. It was thus so for our immigrant ancestors in the 19th and 20th centuries. Ellis Island has nowbeen replaced by the Rio Grande.

Our political representatives are working on solutions that will hopefully take care of the children and youth fleeing danger and also make ourcountry safe from danger and from criminal elements. The procedures used for the detention, screening, judging, legal representation, and final determination of the fate of the detainees needs to be timely and just. The children and youth need to be safe from harm and treated with the samedignity we accord our own children. We are, after all, God's children first before differences of national heritage.

Many Christian people and others of good will and generosity are working along with those in the Catholic community to protect the children and youth, and to assist the public sector in responding to this challenge. By all of us working together, may we accomplish God's will for these endangered children and youth.

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

THE REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT CHILDREN/YOUTH TRAGIC DILEMMA

BACKGROUND: Central American children continue to flee rampant violencein their countries. Some travel to the United States seeking refuge and areplaced under the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), a program of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The numberof arriving children has well exceeded ORR's projections for the fiscal year.

In a recent message, Pope Francis called for compassion for and care of these children: "Such an humanitarian emergency demands as its firstmeasure the urgent protection and properly taking in of the children." In an effort to adequately respond to this humanitarian crisis, it is paramount that we:

l Oppose proposals that would roll back protections that were enactedas part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and the William Wilberforce

Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) of 2008, undermining due process protections for unaccompanied children arrivingfrom non-contiguous countries, and

l Support funding for legal representation for children; the placementof families in community-based settings with vital social services, ratherthan detention facilities; and addressing the root causes of flight.

ACTION: Please urge your U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative to oppose legislative efforts to strip protections away from unaccompanied children and to support supplemental funding for the protection of vulnerablechildren and other refugees.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION & FAITH FORMATION

“Let the little children come to me...” (Mt 19:14) These words of Christ to his disciples guide the focus of Religious Education at St. Joan of Arc. We strive to help children, families and adults come into a deeper relationship with Christ and His Church through the study of the Catholic Faith and the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. As a newcomer to Boca Raton, that is also the main reason why I am here at St. Joan of Arc. I have always felt called to work with ReligiousEducation and I am blessed that St. Joan of Arc is giving me that opportunity. As a volunteer Catechist, I taught Kindergarten and 1st Gradefor many years when my children were attending CCD. Giving up a 20 year career as a Software Engineer to “stay home with the kids,” I worked as a substitute teacher in Catholic schools, often teaching 7th Grade Religion. For several years, I also facilitated an adult faith sharing group at our parish. Now at St. Joan of Arc, I assist Sister Vivian in the administration of the Religious Education office, which is always busy. Even in summer!Summer is when we register students and plan the next year of Religious Education classes. It is also thetime to plan the Confirmation Retreat in September, hold the Adult Confirmation classes, and prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation in October. The beginning of Religious Education classes in September is always exciting. Classes are held from September to May. Many events and celebrations are planned throughout the year, starting with Open Houseand followed by All Saints celebration, Christmas toy drive, Lenten Rice Bowls, Sacramental Parents’meetings, and Sacrament of Reconciliation services. The Religious Education year ends with the celebration

of the Sacrament of First Holy Eucharist in May.Classes for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) also begin in September. Through RCIA, non-baptized adult Catechumens and baptized adult Candidates are fully received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.Throughout the year, the Religious Education Office also coordinates the monthly pre-Baptismal classes, adult formation classes, and the workof many volunteers who support our programs. It is always a great joy to meet and speak with the children, parents, families, adults and volunteers who form a part of Religious Education atSt. Joan of Arc. We hope that in Religious Education you will always encounter Christ in a welcoming atmosphere, kind words and a friendly smile. The LORD bless you and keep you!The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you!The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! (NM 6:24-26)

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SUMMER OFFICE HOURS

Parents with children in Religious Education last year mayhave received a call from our Office inviting them to comeback to register for Religious Education again. The mostcommon response we have received is BUT MY CHILD AL-READY DID FIRST COMMUNION.I would like this opportunity to explain to you why we areinviting them back. When you send your child to school, itis important for the child to complete his or her educationfrom Kinder to Twelfth grade. If the child only goes to sec-ond grade and does not return again until twelfth grade ex-pecting to graduate, there will be a huge gap in theeducation of the child and graduation will not be possible.More importantly, the child will not have the tools and edu-cation needed to navigate college. In Faith Formation, something similar often happens. The child comes to FirstCommunion

preparation and then does not return until Confirmation. There is a huge gap in the faith education of the child. InCatholic School, children receive Catholic religion classesevery day. Children in public school and even in private Christian schools do not benefit from the Catholic formationthey need to understand their faith. Catechism is the waythat has been established to give children a formal systematic Catholic education. Please, bring your child to Religious Education to continuetheir religious training. Each grade has a specific topic todeepen the child’s knowledge of the Catholic faith. I assureyou, you will provide your child with a most wonderful gift.Next week, I will share with you the curriculum of the program as it progresses through the years. Have a safe and restful summer!

Monday to Friday 9:00am. to 4:00 pm. Open during Lunch hour. Also by appointment.

Ah the summer months! No homework… no heavy backpacks… uniforms… reports… no tests…science projects or dragging to the bus stop too early in the morning…Beach

Time to hit the beach, the pool, the mall, and the movies…. Hang out with friends….Fun summer camps… sleeping late and playing video games till late... eating icecream… vacationing with family… traveling to new places or old favorite ones...Wonderful time SUMMER… But wait… aren’t we forgetting something? Where is God in all this? Luckily for us, God does not take vacations. He continues to watch over us 24/7 evenover the summer months. So, yes Catechism is over, no more coming every Sunday at9:15 a.m. or Wednesday at 4:45p.m. But please, don’t forget to continue to come tothank Jesus in a formal way in the celebration of the Mass. The word Eucharist meansjust that TO GIVE THANKS. Yes, I know what you are thinking… you can thank God atanytime and anywhere. And that is true. But coming to Mass is a special way we givethanks to God for the week we’ve had and we come to receive the food that strengthens our spiritual life in the bread andwine where Jesus is present. Especially all those of you who have received First Communion this year should continue to

come every week to receive the body of Christ. You say,” but I’m going on vacation, I can’t come to St. Joan!” No worries. There are Catholic Churches where masses are celebrated all over UnitedStates. It’s also part of the vacation fun to go visit a new Church and learn itshistory. I love to stop by Our Lady Queen of the Universe in Orlando when I goto Disney World or Universal Studios, it’s a beautiful Church constructed fortourists. Many states have older style Churches that you may not be familiarwith, it is a lot of fun to see the architecture of the building and the differentsaints and paintings those churches have. And more important, it’s a great feeling to know that anywhere we go, we have a place where we are family, where we are home and where we can share our faith with others.I will be going on retreat and vacation these coming weeks. You and your family will be in my prayers. I look forward to finding a new church to visit and go to Mass.

Did your child receive First Communion on May 10th?
