Why did Jesus refered about John the Baptist as the greatest personborn of a woman and why he refered about those who enter God's kingdom will be greater than John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11).John the Baptist is the last and greatest of the prophets from the OldTestament. He fulfilled the important work of all the prophets – to befinger pointing to Christ, God's Anointed Son and Messiah. John prepared the way for the Messiah and he sent other people to Jesusin the River Jordan when he was saying; Behold the Lamb of Godwho takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29).
John the Baptist knew what Jesus would accomplish through his death on the cross – our redemption from sin anddeath and our adoption as sons and daughters of God. Jesus knew that what the Father sent him to accomplish for oursake would accomplish all that the prophets did and foreseen in the past. Jesus not only offers us pardon and healing. He gives us life and the promise of unending joy with him in his kingdom.

DECEMBER 15 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 3
PASTOR´S MESSAGE
One of the most important characteristics of the Mass since the renewal of the
second Vatican Council is active participation. In many ways, the extent to which
we are transformed by participation in the Mass depends upon the degree and
quality of our presence. The saving power, presence and life of God are always available to us
through the Mass. We, however, will benefit to the extent to which we are focused, open and
involved in the Mass. Ritual participation is the opposite of viewer participation. We are in the
action, critical to the action and changed by the action. Our receptivity could be compared to a
radio receiver if we are not "tuned" in fully we don’t benefit much.
So what are some of the characteristics of "active participation"? First of all we need to be physically present. Our bodies, the
involvement of our senses of sight and hearing need to be fully engaged. Without our active bodily participation, we miss out on the
richness of the Mass and its opportunities for growth and change. The postures we assume (processing, standing, sitting, kneeling,
folding of our hands, lifting up of our arms, the handshake of peace), speak of our interior feelings and thoughts. They make visible
outside what is going on inside of us. The focus of our visual attention is also very important. There is often a lot of activity going
on simultaneously during Mass. We have to intentionally focus on the pulpit, altar, tabernacle in the midst of other distractions.
We also need to focus our listening selectively so that we don't miss the readings of sacred scripture, the homily, the prayers of the
Mass and the singing.
Our active involvement with our minds, our thinking and remembering is also a critical element in participation. We have to be
careful not to check our minds at the door as we enter the church. We need to be alert, listening, applying the scripture lesson and the
homily to our life. The Word of God comes to us as we are and where we are but we need to process it and learn from it. We also use
the faculty of memory quite a bit in the Mass. We remember the saving death and resurrection of the Lord and all that history
shattering event means. We remember what our Hebrew and early Christian fore bearers did and we learn from their journeys of faith.
Finally, we benefit from being open and receptive spiritually during the Mass. It is an excellent opportunity to unite our prayers
with those of all the other members of the Body of Christ. The main theme of the Mass is always thanksgiving for what God has
accomplished in Christ and with the power of the Holy Spirit. "What marvels God has worked among his people". Gratefulness, praise,
joy, hope, "good news" are the spiritual emotions that we feel in response to the gifts of the Word of God and the Body and Blood of
our Savior. We are also invited to reverence the sacrifice of our Lord in his passion and death. We can unite our own sacrifices with His
and grow in strength through our union with Him. We also offer ourselves, imperfect as we are, to the Father so that God might use
our gifts and energies to further His kingdom.
There is no substitute for our presence and participation in the Mass. No one can take our place. God wants to transform all of us
into saints and the Mass is one of the central ways that this is accomplished. An appropriate motto especially during Advent is "be
there, body, mind and spirit".

6 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l DECEMBER 15
Because the message of the angels to the shepherds was one of “good tidings of great
joy”, the third Sunday of Advent is devoted to the theme of joy, reminding Christians
that the Christmas message is one of rejoicing. In fact, the traditional name of this day
was ‘Gaudete Sunday”, from the Latin word “Rejoice”.
The spirit of joy also comes from the words of Paul, “The Lord is near”. To contrast this
Sunday from the others, Advent wreaths use a pink or rose-colored candle rather than
a royal purple one as in other weeks.
We prepare this week by feeling the joy. We move through this week feeling a part of
the waiting world that rejoices because our longing has prepared us to believe that
reign of God is close at hand.
Let’s begin each morning this week with a sense of liberating joy. Perhaps we can
pause, breathe deeply and say, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my
spirit rejoices in God my savior”. Throughout the day, experience the Light of Christ
within you and experience the difference our faith can bring into our lives.
Each night, pause in gratitude. Whatever the day has brought, no matter how busy it
has been, we can stop, before we fall asleep, to give thanks for a little more light,
a little more freedom to walk by the light, in joy.
Advent is indeed a time of joyful expectation. Joy comes wrapped in many packages.
Take the time to humbly repent your sins, ask for the Grace of God to fully appreciate
the gift of the Christ-child and commit yourself to serving those in need this Advent and
you will enter into the joy of the Lord.

DECEMBER 15 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 13
FROM OUR THE DIRECTOR OF HISPANIC MINISTRY
ALWAYS JOYFUL
“The joy of the Gospel fills the whole heart and life of those who meet Jesus . "
So begins the Apostolic Exhortation " Evangelii Gaudium " .
The Pope writes to invite us to a new stage of evangelization marked by joy.
He indicates ways for the Church to progress in the coming years. He warns us of
today’s great risk of falling into “an individualistic sadness." He strongly appeals to all
the baptized that, in a "permanent state of mission”, we take others to the love
of Jesus with new fervor and dynamism.
Pope Francis, in his " Evangelii Gaudium, " invites us to " recover the original
freshness of the Gospel," finding " new and creative ways, " to take others to the love
of Jesus with the joy we have of being children of God, of having Jesus as a personal
friend.
Our apostolate is not something that we add to our boring “task” list of things to
do. Like the first Christians, we are apostles with Jesus Christ in our lives wherever we
are: in the bus, in a plane, at work in a factory or in public office, in the hospital, sick in
bed, at home changing diapers or even washing dishes.
Pope Francis wants “a pastoral and missionary conversion.” He wants to bring
about a" structural reform” so that the church will become more missionary.
The Pontiff also envisions a conversion of the papacy “to make it" more faithful to what
Jesus wanted it to be and to attend better to the needs of evangelizing today.
God, full of joy, welcomes everyone with open arms. The Pope says we need to
“have temples with doors opened everywhere “so that all those who are seeking will
never find “the coldness of closed doors." "Nor should the sacraments be closed for
any reason”, especially the Eucharist which “is not an award for the perfect, but is a
generous remedy and food for the weak.”
The Pope reaffirms that he prefers a “Church that is soiled and stained from going
outside, rather than a Church worried about being at the center and which ends up
tangled in obsessions and procedures.” We should be more worried that many of our
brothers and sisters live “without the friendship of Jesus.”
Confronting the issue of enculturation, He recalls that "Christianity does not have a
unique and singular cultural mode" and that the face of the Church is “multifaceted."
We cannot pretend that the peoples of all continents express the Christian faith by
imitating the ways that European peoples found in a given moment in history. The
Pope reaffirms the “actively evangelizing force” of popular piety and encourages the
research being conducted by theologians, inviting them to carry in their hearts “the
evangelical purpose of the Church. “
The Pope says that the homily should be brief and should avoid sounding like a
lecture or a class. It must say "words that ignite the hearts" instead of being purely
moralistic, indoctrinating preaching. He stresses the importance of preparation: “a
preacher who is not prepared is “not spiritual and is dishonest and irresponsible"...
A good sermon should contain “an idea, a feeling, an image." Preaching should
always give hope and should always be positive. The very same proclamation of the
Gospel must have positive features: closeness, openness to dialogue, patience and a
cordial welcome that does not condemn.
Speaking of the challenges of the contemporary world, the Pope denounces
the current economic system: "It is unfair at its roots. This economic system kills,
because the law of the strongest prevails." The current culture of "discard" has created
“something new." "The excluded are not "exploited" but are a waste, "a surplus."
"We live in a "new, unseen tyranny, sometimes virtual”, a “deified market " where
"financial speculation prevails", "a blanched selfish corruption and tax evasion."
The Pope reports "attacks on religious freedom” and of “new situations of the
persecution of Christians. In many places it is rather a diffuse, relativistic indifference.
The family - continues the Pope “is in a deep cultural crisis. “ Insisting on “the
indispensable contribution of marriage to society," he says that “the postmodern,
globalized individualism promotes a lifestyle that ... denatures family ties.”
The Pope reaffirms” the right of pastors “to issue opinions on all matters affecting
the lives of people." "No one can require us to relegate religion to the secret privacy of
individuals, without any influence on the social life." He quotes John Paul II when he
says that the Church “cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for
justice." “For the Church’s option for the poor is a theological category “rather
than sociological. "So”, Pope Francis says, “I want a poor Church for the poor. They
have much to teach”. Until we do not radically solve the problems of the poor... the
world's problems will not be solved.” "Politics, as denigrated as it is," he says, "is one
of the most beautiful forms of charity." "May the Lord grant us more politicians
to whom the lives of the poor really hurt." And then a warning “Any community of
the Church "that forgets the poor” will risk its dissolution." The Pope invites caring
for the weakest, “the homeless, drug addicts, refugees, indigenous peoples, the
elderly who are increasingly alone and abandoned“and migrants, urging countries "
to a generous opening."
The Pope also urges a path of dialogue “opening the Church to cooperate with all
political, social, religious and cultural realities. Ecumenism, he says “is an inescapable
path of evangelization " "how many things we can learn from each other" as
“in dialogue and friendship with the children of Israel who are part of the life of Jesus'
disciples," “interfaith dialogue which leads to a clear and joyous identity is a must to
obtain peace in the world," "a relationship with the believers of Islam today is very
important." The Pope implores "humbly" for the Islamic countries to ensure religious
freedom for Christians "considering the freedom that believers of Islam enjoy in the
West." And against the attempt to privatize religion in some contexts, he states that
“the due respect for minorities of agnostics or non-believers should not be imposed in
an arbitrary way to silence the convictions of majorities of believers or ignore the
richness of religious traditions." Thus, He reiterates the importance of dialogue and
alliance between believers and nonbelievers.
The last chapter is devoted to "evangelists with Spirit," which are those "open
without fear to the Holy Spirit" that "provides the strength to announce the news of
the Gospel with boldness, loudly and at all times and in all places , to " evangelists
who pray and work " , knowing that a passion for Jesus is, at the same time, a passion
for His people." "Jesus wants that we touch the suffering flesh of others." "In our
relationship with the world, we are invited to give a reason for our hope, but not make
enemies by pointing and condemning." “We can only take others to the love of Jesus
seeking the good of others, wishing the happiness of others." "If I can help one person
to live better, that alone justifies my life." The Pope invites us, not to be discouraged
by failures or poor results, because the fruits are often invisible, at times beyond our
comprehension and cannot be accounted for." “Just know that only our commitment
is needed.”
The Exhortation concludes with a prayer to Mary, "the Mother of the Gospel."
"There is a Marian style in the evangelizing activity of the Church because every time
we look back to Mary, we see that tenderness and
affection are revolutionary.

that normally airs the diocese’s weekly Sunday morning half-hour Mass.
Bishop Barbarito will be the celebrant. There will also be great music from
a choir. Similar to the diocese’s weekly-produced televised Mass, this
Christmas Mass allows those who are sick and homebound to hear God’s

cerca. Podemos aproximarnos a Él cuanto queramos.
Encontrar a Cristo, y volverlo a encontrar,
supone una alegría profunda siempre nueva.
El Arzobispo de los
Angeles Mons. José
Gómez, afirmó que la ex-
hortación apostólica Evan-
gelii Gaudium.
Incluso si no
