The Reading is from t. Paul's Second Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19 BRETHREN, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Juda-ism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zeal-ous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

The Reading is from The Gospel of Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came

up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down be-fore him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, say-ing, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

VPK, Kindergarten & 1st grades - Brenda Roman & Donna Thomson Today we carved a pumpkin. What does a Pumpkin have to do with church, you ask? This is what the children learned: 1.) We will open our minds so we can receive God ( we carved open the top of the pumpkin) 2.) We will clear our thoughts of mean thoughts or prejudices ( we cleaned out the innards) 3.) We will open our eyes so we can see all the good in God's world (we carved the eyes) 4.) We will awaken all our senses to be aware of all the goodness around us ( we carved the nose) 5.) We will share God's message with friends and family ( we carved the mouth) 6.) We will let our light shine for all to see!! ( we put a light inside the pump-kin )... Attendance: 7

2nd - 4th Grades - Jonna Myatt This week's lesson was "the Saints of our Church". We talked about why and how we honor the saints. The Church helps us by keeping alive the memory of the saints who were very courageous and whose stories are an example for us, so we can grow as Christians. We also wrote down our Patron Saints on the board, learned a few facts about each one and looked at the icons. Attendance: 10

5th - 6th Grades - Daphne Courey & Anastasia Theodorou Todays lesson focused on the meaning and importance of ethics in society. The children had fun giving advice like Dear Abby on how they would solve an eth-ical dilemma presented in the class. We also discussed righteous behavior as doing what is right in the eyes of God. In our bible story we learned that King Solomon asked God for the gift of wisdom which he then used to govern the people with justice and recognize the difference between good and evil. GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA 8-10 East 79th St. New York, NY 10075-0106 * Tel: (212) 570-3530

    Fax: (212) 774-0237 www.goarch.org - Email: [email protected]

Protocol 212/16 November 8, 2016 Feast of the Synaxis of the Holy Archangels To the Most Reverend Hierarchs, the Reverend Priests and Deacons, the Monks and Nuns, the Presidents and Members of the Parish Councils of the Greek Orthodox Communities, the Distinguished Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Day, Afternoon, and Church Schools, the Philoptochos Sister-hoods, the Youth, the Hellenic Organizations, and the entire Greek Orthodox Family in America Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this blessed Feast of the Synaxis of the Holy Archangels we honor and sup-port each year the legacy of compassionate service and quality care through the sacred ministry of Saint Michaels Home, one of the National Ministries of the Holy Archdiocese of America. As the Holy Angels have and continue to offer a witness of the grace of God, the staff, administration and benefactors of Saint Michaels continue to offer grace and love to the residents and their families in an environment that sustains the body with dignity and nurtures the soul in our Orthodox faith. As the only Greek Orthodox elder care facility in the United States under the aegis of the Archdiocese, this holy work in caring for our elderly for over 58 years has been sustained and advanced by many in our community, and we give thanks to God for all that has been accomplished. He has blessed the generosity and commitment of our faithful, and from this foundation we are now able to expand the ministry of Saint Michaels to offer care to more peo-ple and in more ways. In the Fall of 2014, Saint Michaels purchased an 11-acre site in Uniondale on Long Island, which includes a 90,000 square foot building. Once renovated, this facility will provide a home for 160 residents compared to 60 at the cur-rent location. In addition, the new facility will expand the care of the elderly

  • 9

from one level to five. These include a nursing home section, a wing for resi-dents who are burdened with dementia or Alzheimers, studio bedrooms for independent and assisted living, and independent living one-bedroom apart-ments. In an enjoyable and beautiful environment the facility will also have additional areas that enhance the quality of daily life, including a magnificent chapel, numerous outdoors gardens, a library, beauty salon, physical and oc-cupational therapy rooms, computer lounge and many other ancillary spaces needed to assure the well-being and happiness of its residents. To make this long awaited and much needed Greek Orthodox Continuum-Care Facility a reality and provide a home for more of our beloved seniors, your support is critically needed. I ask the faithful of our Holy Archdiocese to con-tinue our tradition of supporting this national ministry through a special col-lection on Sunday, November 6. The gifts should be sent to the Archdiocese in care of Saint Michaels and will be forwarded to the Home. Your generosity is needed at this time to fulfill the vision of making this ministry a premier, multi-leveled senior care home. Our faithful are invited to visit the website of the facility to see how you can be a part of this exciting endeavor with various naming opportunities. I also ask you to consider prayerfully the additional support you can offer in the months and years ahead to this expansion of a sacred ministry of compassion and care. As we sing in the hymns of the Feast of the Holy Archangels, calling upon them for protection and deliverance from oppression, sorrow, and sickness into the glorious liberty, joy, and abundant life in Christ, may we offer this as our prayer for our elderly in need. May we also labor to support and expand our witness of the Gospel and the ministry of grace through Saint Michaels Home, which has and will continue to be a home-away-from-home for countless el-derly from the New York Metropolitan area and many parts of our Archdio-cese. With paternal love in Christ, DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America

MESSAGE FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS

My Beloved Ones, Yesterday, the Orthodox Church celebrated a beautiful milestone in its recent history, for November 2nd marked the 25th anniversary of His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomews elevation to the Ecumenical Throne. I know I echo the thoughts of my fellow Bishops and Metropolitans when I say that it has been a privilege and honor to serve the Holy Mother Church, with His All-Holiness as a guiding example. I am particularly thankful to have been able to spend time with His All-Holiness during my service in the Holy Synod. From celebrating Divine Liturgy with him and my fellow Bishops, to discussing initiatives and pro-grams of our Metropolis of Atlanta, His All-Holiness exudes a true Christ-like love and concern for all his flock. He has exhibited true leadership for the Holy Orthodox Church, taking firm stands on positions such as the environment, the recent refugee crises throughout the world, as well as interfaith dialogues with fellow Christians and non-Christians alike. In all these things and many more, Patriarch Bartholomew has been a true disciple of Christ, demonstrating both his firm commitment to the message of the Gospel, while never for-getting the fruits of the Spirit, including patience and love for all men. Our Lord ended His earthly ministry by charging His disciples to go and make disciples of all the nations (Matthew 28:19). In his twenty-five years as Ecumenical Patriarch, His All-Holiness has never wavered in that commitment to proclaim Orthodoxy to a world which was often either indifferent or ignorant. The joy with which he has proclaimed the Good News means multitudes are certainly no longer ignorant of Orthodox Christianity; and indeed, those who truly hear witness His All-Holiness evangelizing do not come away unmoved. Truly, we as a Metropolis, and the entire Universal Body of Christ, should consider ourselves fortunate and blessed to have a Hierarch who so selflessly serves others, with an untiring spirit, no matter the trials or ob-stacles he encounters.

May the Lord our God continue to bestow health and peace upon His All-Holiness, our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, granting him many more years in the service of Orthodoxy! +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta
