T H E P A S T O R ’ S C O L U M N Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today’s readings have similar parallels, one concerning human ambitions and another on predictions of the Passion of Christ. How often have we witnessed others behaving badly because of their blind ambition, selfishness, or enormous egos? Perhaps, we can think of a time when we, too, fail victim to our own ambition and, as a result, hurt those we love or those who depend us. Ambition blinds us as we tend to rationalize our behavior which can be cruel to others. Yet, ambition does say something of who we are or who we want to be especially when we are critical of others. In reality, we are critical of ourselves for faults we do not admit in our own behavior. . . such ambition is rooted in jealousy, misguided passion, and selfishness. I am not suggesting that human ambition is bad, rather, ambition which is sustained in wisdom produces good fruits, is merciful, and cultivates well being, and is centered in love and in service to Christ is our call. In the Gospel of Mark and the First Reading, we hear for the second time indirect and direct references to the Passion, the suffering and death of the “Son of God.” In the Gospel, the disciples do not fully understand what Jesus meant when he said, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after, the Son of Man will rise.” Instead the disciples argued as to who would be the greatest among them—this was misguided wisdom and misguided ambition. Jesus recognized that the disciples ambition was blinding them and he responded by teaching them about the virtue of humility and simplicity by using the example of the child. Let us respond and endeavor to be ambitious, ambitious for a life committed to love and service to Christ in whom we can produce good fruits and an ambition full of mercy. Our world would be a profoundly better place if all were to embrace a human ambition tempered by the
teachings of our Lord. Father Enrique

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo
Las lecturas de Hoy tienen paralelos similares, una habla acerca de las ambiciones humanas y la otra de las predicciones de la
Pasión de Cristo. ¿Cuántas veces hemos sido testigos del mal comportamiento de los demás, debido a su egoísmo, ciega ambición, o enorme ego?. Quizás podemos pensar que alguna vez cuando también nosotros, victimas de nuestra propia ambición, hemos herido a los que dependen de nosotros. La ambición nos ciega y no permite, que veamos que, nues-tra conducta puede ser cruel para con los demás. Y más aún cuando esa ambición dice quienes somos y quienes queremos ser especial-mente cuando criticamos a los demás. En realidad, somos críticos con nosotros mismos por las faltas que no admitimos en nuestra propia con-ducta, tal ambición esta arraigada en la envidia, la pasión desordenada y el egocentrismo. No digo que la ambición es mala, sino que ésta debe ser guiada por la sabiduría para que produzca frutos buenos, y al ser compasiva seremos mejores personas centrándonos en el amor y el servicio a Cristo, como es nuestro llamado. En el evangelio de San Marcos y en la Primera Lectura, escuchamos acerca del sufrimiento y muerte del “Hijo de Dios”. En el evangelio, los discípulos no entienden cuando Jesús les dice: “El Hijo del hombre será condenado a muerte y resucitará tres días después; en lugar de eso, los discípulos discutían acerca de quien sería el mas grande entre ellos, siendo esto ambición y una sabiduría errónea. Jesús reconoce que la ambición los estaba cegando y aprovecha para enseñarles acerca de la virtud de la humildad y simplicidad usando el ejemplo del niño. Respondamos y seamos ambiciosos en llevar una vida comprometida a amar y servir a Cristo, en quien nosotros podemos dar frutos buenos, y una ambición llena de misericordia. Nuestro mundo será un mejor lugar si todos ambicionamos las enseñanzas del Señor.

The Joy of Just Living—Step 3 La Alegríá de Vivir—Paso 3
BECOME CONSCIOUS OF WHAT YOU ALREADY OWN AND HOW MUCH YOU HAVE —PRAYER (Turn your heart toward God.) I begin now my third step on this journey. Here I am challenged to see all that I have, and to be grateful for it. If I have too much, let me be honest and willing to be content. If I have too little, help me to see what I need with a pure heart and not become greedy as I gather what is needed for life.
(Pause to consider quietly all the man possessions now in your care.) I pray, O God, for the ability to detach myself from possessions and to see my own worth as separate from the things I own. Plant within me a heart full of gratitude for all that I have. Give me the great gift of a satisfied heart so that I can see what is most important: love, forgiveness, and peace. Take an honest inventory of all your belongings. Do you have an abundance of some items? Do you rarely use other things? Is these a need to share with others? Take our list into prayer. Invite Jesus to guide you into a just way of living in terms of how much you own. The purpose of this exercise is not to render judgment, but to help individuals see more clearly into what often becomes invisible in life: “our stuff”.
HACER CONCIENCIA DE LO QUE POSEES Y CUANTO TIENES. ORACIÓN. Jesús, Amigo y Compañero, Empiezo ahora mi tercer paso de este ca-minar. Este paso me reta a ver todo lo que tengo, y por lo que debo de estar agradecido. Si tengo mucho, debo ser honesto y dispuesto a estar contento. Si tengo muy poco, ayú-dame a ver lo que necesito con un corazón puro y no ser codicioso al juntar lo que necesito para vivir.
Toma una pausa para considerar en silencio todas las posesiones que tienes ahora a tu cuidado. Rezo, O Señor, por la habilidad de despe-garme de mis posesiones y ver mi propio valor separado de las cosas que poseo. Planta en mi un corazón lleno de gratitud por todo lo que tengo. Dame el gran regalo de un corazón satisfecho para que pueda ver lo que es mas importante: amor, perdón y paz.
Haz un inventario honesto de tus posesiones. ¿Tienes algunas cosas de mas? ¿Realmente necesitas esas cosas? ¿Hay la necesidad de compartir con los demás? Toma esa lista cuando ores. Invita a Jesús a guiarte a una manera justa de vivir en términos de lo que posees. El propósito de este ejercicio no es hacer un juicio, sino mas bien ayudar a las personas a ver mas claramente lo que muy a menudo se vuelve invisible en la vida: "nuestras cosas".
