We are thrilled to welcome Sherrill Milnes to the events surround-
ing this weekend’s Mather Competition. Mr. Milnes is universally
acclaimed as the foremost operatic baritone of his generation. He
sang over 650 performances at the Met, where he was honored
with sixteen new productions, seven opening nights, and ten na-
tional telecasts. Mr. Milnes continues to give master classes, judge
competitions, and mentor new generations of singers. With his
wife, Maria Zouves, he co-founded and runs the Sherrill Milnes
VOICE Programs: VOICExperience Foundation and the Savannah
VOICE Festival provide training for aspiring young artists while
fostering new audiences for the arts.
Today, he will meet with the singers after the competition, Tomor-
row, Sunday November 4, he will lead a master class for the schol-
arship winners at The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Audito-
rium from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The master class is free and open
to the public, so be sure to come.

The Singers’ Club and Our Scholarships
The Singers’ Club of Cleveland
The Singers’ Club of Cleveland, a male chorus established in
1891, gave its first public performance on May 19, 1892, and is
currently celebrating its 125th
anniversary season. Today, The
Singers’ Club balances tradition and innovation. Our repertoire
is unique and challenging, and our membership diverse. We
draw singers from many northeast Ohio communities and oc-
cupations. We have awarded scholarships for many years, and
take pride in those whom we support. Awards recipients are of-
ten featured soloists in The Singers’ Club concerts.
S. Livingston Mather Scholarship
S. Livingston (Liv) Mather was a dedicated Singers’ Club
member for many years and a devoted friend until his death in
1960. The Club is grateful to the Trustees of the S. Livingston
Mather Charitable Trust, for their long support the Mather
Scholarship. The Mather Scholar will receive $2,000.
George L. Hackett Scholarship
George Hackett was a Singers’ Club member for fifty years,
serving the Club in many capacities including President. He
was named an Honorary Member in 1993. In 2000, his sister
and brother-in-law, Jean and Robert Arnold, established the
George L. Hackett Scholarship. Many others have since con-
tributed to the scholarship fund as a memorial to this fine gen-
tleman. The Hackett Scholar receives $1,400.

The Singers’ Club and Our Scholarships
Jere H. Brophy Scholarship
Jere Brophy was an internationally known materials scientist
and a senior executive of several materials companies who had
a lifelong love for instrumental and vocal music. He avidly
supported the Mather Competition, giving freely of his energy
and resources. The Brophy Scholarship was instituted in De-
cember 2014 by his wife Elaine to honor his memory and his
love and commitment to The Singers’ Club and the Mather
Competition. The Brophy Scholar is awarded $1,400.
Albert Rees Davis Scholarships Albert Rees Davis conducted The Singers’ Club from 1906 to
1919. Liv Mather was instrumental in the creation of the Albert
Rees Davis Endowment Fund after his death. The fund has
given sustaining support to The Singers’ Club of Cleveland ev-
er since, and currently funds the annual Albert Rees Davis
scholarships. Each ARD Scholar will receive $1,250.

Judges
James Binion
James Binion holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse Col-
lege in Atlanta and an M.M. degree in Voice and Choral Conducting
from Cleveland State University. He is Outreach Director for The
Opera Cleveland and Voice Instructor at The Music Settlement. He
has performed numerous leading baritone roles with Opera Circle,
and has appeared in Cleveland, Atlanta, & Paris in productions of
Porgy & Bess, Aida, UnBallo in Maschera, and La Bohème.
Daniel Hathaway
Daniel Hathaway studied historical musicology at Harvard College
(A.B. 67) and Princeton University, and earned an M.Div. degree
from the Episcopal Divinity School. He founded Music & Perform-
ing Arts at Trinity, Trinity Chamber Orchestra, the Brownbag Con-
cert Series, and the Medieval Feasts. He has conducted orchestras
and presented organ recitals around the world. In 2008 he founded
ClevelandClassical.com, a non-profit web-based publication dedicat-
ed to promoting live classical music in Northeast Ohio. He team-
teaches music criticism at Oberlin College and Conservatory, and
writes for several national music publications.
Natalie Mallis
Singers’ Club Artistic Director Natalie Mallis holds degrees from
Bowling Green and Kent State Universities, and is a doctoral candi-
date in choral conducting at the University of North Texas in Den-
ton. She has served as Director of Choral Activities at Kent State
Stark, Artistic Director of the Denton Community Chorus, Associate
Conductor of the North Texas A Cappella Choir, and Associate Con-
ductor of the North Texas University Singers, and has taught on cho-
ral music faculties at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and
Millikin University.
A soprano, Natalie is an active guest conductor, choral clinician, and
professional choral singer. She has performed and recorded with the

24-voice San Antonio Chamber Choir, and has appeared at the Bos-
ton Early Music Festival with the University of North Texas Colle-
gium Singers. She currently sings with the newly formed Cleveland
Chamber Choir.
Mary Schiller
Mary Schiller received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Univer-
sity of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Master and Doctor of Mu-
sical Arts degrees from The Ohio State University. She has appeared
in and sung leading roles in more than 30 operas, and performed in
oratorio and recital in the U.S. and Europe. She is a frequent adjudi-
cator at major voice competitions and is a sought-after master-class
clinician. She has served on the faculties of several prestigious
schools in the US and Europe, and maintains a private voice studio in
New York City. Her students have performed with major opera com-
panies, participated in top festival and workshop settings, and won
numerous prestigious awards.
Joanne Uniatowski
Joanne Uniatowski, Associate professor in Voice at Baldwin Wallace
Conservatory of Music, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from
The Cleveland Institute of Music, a Master of Music degree from the
University of Alabama, a Bachelor of Music degree from the Univer-
sity of Akron, and a language diploma from Jagiellonian University
in Krakow, Poland. She is well-known in northeastern Ohio for her
work in opera, as a soloist with numerous area orchestras and choral
groups (including The Singers’ Club of Cleveland), and as a can-
tor/soloist at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. She was execu-
tive director of the Art Song Festival at Baldwin Wallace University,
and is a sought-after clinician for masterclasses both in voice and in
Roman-Catholic liturgical cantoring. Her voice students have been
heard on Broadway, network television, national tours, and in major
graduate programs.
