Editor’s spotlightdance floor due to doctor’s orders, I’m feeling better and ready to Cha Cha!! Traditional medicine helps for aches and pains, but I have to say that dance has a way of lifting my spirits naturally. According to Psychology Today, research shows that moving with others expands your sense of self and of social connectedness. The extreme focus or “mindfulness” of dance interrupts negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety and depression. As I continue to gain back my strength, dance will surely be the best therapy for my body and my spirit. Check out the variety of dance classes and events happening in April inside this issue.

I decided it was time to go to Buenos Aires, the mecca of Argentine Tango, after dancing for many years. I had a fantastic teacher who taught me not just tango, but how it’s danced in Buenos Aires, which is drastically different than in the United States. I wrote in the March 2013 issue how Argentines invite and accept invita-tions to dance. This month, I’m writ-ing about their navigation around the dance floor.
The dance floor is as extremely crowded as the subway during rush hour. Courtesy dictates that passen-gers leave the train before new ones enter. Passengers move throughout the car creating space for new pas-sengers to enter, avoiding collisions as much as possible. This same nav-igation skill to avoid collisions is used on the milonga dance floor.
Imagine sitting in sardine packed traffic on the Southern State Park-way. Traffic moves like a conga line. You can only move forward when the car in front moves forward. Some drivers accept the situation and some can’t. Those that can’t, feverously change lanes at every opportunity to gain a few feet or drive on the shoulder or the median. Now imagine a crowd on a portable dance floor with interlocking panels shaped in 4 feet x 4 feet squares. When the floor is crowded, a couple is limited to ONE square until the couple in front advances to the next open square. With little space, the choice of figures is extremely limited. But that’s OK because the Argentines only know SEVEN figures! They un-derstand a cardinal rule of dancing that is rarely taught. Not only do you dance with your partner, you’re also dancing WITH EVERY BODY ELSE ON THE FLOOR.
Another Lesson from the Argentines: Space Management
This message is not understood very well at American dances. Some people, for the price of admission, think they bought the ENTIRE dance floor. This attitude leads to collisions because if you own the floor, you don’t have to pay attention to other couples.
Americans who stay in place to exe-cute a time and space consuming fig-ure, add to the traffic congestion. As a noted tango instructor said, “If you can’t see anybody in front of you, it’s because everybody is BEHIND YOU.”
Go to www.youtube.com and type “Milonga de los Consagrados” and look at the first video. There must be at least 150 couples on the floor. There isn’t much room to navigate but they use every available square inch. The Argentines know the differ-ence between social and stage tangos.
This navigation skill is also needed when dancing ballroom and Latin. I remember a dance where the traffic flow looked like boats in New York harbor. Staten Island ferries shared the harbor with Statue of Liberty fer-ries, tremendous cruise ships to and from the Passenger Ship Terminal on West 50th Street, and freighters to and from Bayonne. The Coast Guard marks the channel and has prescribed rules on which vessel has right of way. Collisions occur when they aren’t followed. Unfortunately, the Coast Guard doesn’t mark the channel and issue prescribed rules for navigation on dance floors, and men don’t use short range radar to avoid collisions. Some act like a heat seeking missile searching for a target.

Side Breaks have a unique
appearance that adds flare
to both American rhythm
and international Latin
style dances. This figure is
also known as Second Po-
sition Breaks, Cucarachas
and Side Rocks. The term
second position is derived
from the ballet second foot
position where the feet
are turned out pointing in
opposite directions, with
heels spaced approximate-
ly twelve inches apart. In
American rhythm and Lat-
in dance styles the feet are
slightly turned out and are
spaced about shoulder
width apart. Side Breaks are
most commonly danced in
rumba, salsa and mambo
but can also be applied to
a variety of other rhythm
dances.
Side Breaks consist of two
three step patterns that
are taken alternately to
each side. This figure has
Side Breaks
out hold where the lady fol-
lows with a visual lead. Any
combination of these dance
positions can be danced
consecutively or randomly.
Weight changes in Amer-
ican style differ from that
of international style. In
American style rhythm the
weight is fully changed over
each step. A common error
occurs as one lightly taps to
the side rather than chang-
ing weight. One of the chal-
lenges of this figure occurs
with weight changes on the
2ND and 5TH steps. Over these
steps the feet stay in place
as the weight is transferred
to the opposite foot. This
is referred to as replacing
weight. These two steps in
particular serve to greatly
enhance the appearance of
this figure.
The footwork for Side Breaks
is predominantly ball-flat
meaning that the step is
initiated on the inside edge
of the ball of the foot and
then finished by lowering
the feature of providing a
transition from the normal
back and forth motion to
side to side motion. Side
breaks are generally danced
in even sets to insure that
the following figure can
commence on the correct
foot. In rumba for exam-
ple, Side Breaks are danced
to the rhythm quick-quick
slow + quick-quick slow.
The man commences with
his weight settled into his
right hip taking the first
step with left foot to the
side. The lady commences
with her weight settled into
her left hip as she takes her
first step with right foot to
the side. The lady dances
the mirror image or natural
opposite throughout the
figure. The man’s feet posi-
tions for American Rhythm
style are:
American Style:1. Left foot side

will rise and lower over each
of the steps in response to
the footwork. As weight is
taken onto the stepping
foot, the knee straightens as
the corresponding hip rises.
Similarly, as weight is taken
onto the other foot, that
knee straightens as the cor-
responding hip rises. This
gives a distinct hip move-
ment especially when danc-
ing side steps. The combina-
tion of proper footwork and
weight change gives an op-
portunity to express a more
stylized figure eight hip roll
action.
In the international Latin
style, weight changes for
Side Breaks may be partial.
This variation is acceptable
in this style. A step taken in
this manner where only par-
tial weight is transferred is
know as a pressure step. Ac-
cordingly, steps 1 and 4 are
pressure steps in this style.
This technique will give this
figure a somewhat different
appearance. The man’s feet
positions for International
Latin style are:

Side Breaks in any style
provides the dancer with
an opportunity to use hip
and body movements more
flamboyantly. It also serves
to break the monotony of
linear back and forth mo-
tion. Side Breaks have the
added feature of not using
a lot of floor space which
can be an advantage on a
crowded dance floor. This
is an excellent figure to
include in rhythm dance
routines. It combines very
nicely with almost any other
figure to create a more styl-
ized routine.
