Remember (Zachor) to arrive (we always have Bagels and Lox) early on February 18 at 9 AM, for Torah study led by our own Joan Zak! “Be part of the excitement”! This month, we continue “digging into” Exodus. This is the month of the 10 Commandments…introducing Pharaoh (as himself) and Moses (perhaps Charlton Heston?). Yes, that means that Purim and Passover are coming fast! Who is ready to go to Israel during the early summer of 2019? We are looking at another community trip then and want to know who might be interested? Please send an email to [email protected]. Start saving those Shekels! Adon Olam, Master of the Universe, as we reach out to other Jews and as we reach out to those who are not, may we continue to build relationships that allow us to grow, learn, and help others together. We thank you for our energy, passion and drive as we move through this world! See you all soon!

Holstrom, Block & Parke 2017 Shatuf Tzedek

Annually, Congregation Beth Shalom presents a huge event, the Legacy Luncheon. Mark your calendars now for the March 12, 2017 event where Renee Tieszen and Felix Smith from our synagogue will be honored with the Legacy Award. Shomer Tzedek Award (Guardian of Righteousness) will be presented to Kevin Bash (Mayor of Norco) and Holstrom, Block & Parke will receive the Shatuf Tzedek Award (Business Partner). This month completes the brief insight on each of these honorees, and we hope you will connect with Renee Miller to find out how you can participate.

With offices in Orange County, Corona, Temecula, and Riverside, we work with clients throughout all of Southern California, but Corona is our home: our first and largest office.

In previous articles about prominent Jewish people, I haven’t spoken about a scientist, until now. Everyone has heard of the Salk vaccine, but here’s some background on the famous person. Jonas Edward Salk was born October 28, 1914 in New York City, the eldest of three sons to Russian-Jewish immigrants Daniel and Dora Salk. The first

member of his family to attend college, he earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 1939 and became a scientist physician at Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1942, Salk went to the University of Michigan on a research fellowship to develop an influenza vaccine. He soon advanced to the position of assistant professor of epidemiology. He also reconnected with his NYU friend and mentor, Thomas Francis, Jr., head of the epidemiology department at Michigan’s new School of Public Health, who taught him the methodology of vaccine development.

In 1947, Salk was appointed director of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. With funding from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis—now known as the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation—he began to develop the techniques that would lead to a vaccine to wipe out the most frightening scourge of the time: paralytic poliomyelitis. Contrary to the era’s prevailing scientific opinion, Salk believed his vaccine, composed of “killed” polio virus, could immunize without risk of infecting the patient. Salk administered the vaccine to volunteers who had not had polio, including himself, his lab scientist, his wife and their children. All developed anti-polio antibodies and experienced no negative reactions to the vaccine. In 1954, national testing began on one million children, ages six to nine, who became known as the Polio Pioneers. On April 12, 1955, the results were announced: the vaccine was safe and effective. In the two years before the vaccine was widely available, the average number of polio cases in the U.S. was more

than 45,000. By 1962, that number had dropped to 910. Hailed as a miracle worker, Salk never patented the vaccine or earned any money from his discovery, preferring it be distributed as widely as possible. Founding the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, in 1963 was Salk’s second triumph. He was aided with a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation and support from the March of Dimes. Today the Salk Institute is involved in Neuroscience’s, Plant Biology, Regenerative Medicine, Immunizations, Diabetes, etc.

The Membership committee for Congregation Beth Shalom is excited to announce—our Shabbat Dinner events will be returning in 2017. Quarterly we will host a dinner, just prior to services, and allow the synagogue family to gather and enjoy a meal, welcome Shabbat and rejoice in “Ruach”. We invite you all to join us on Friday, February 3 for a Shabbat Dinner Congregation Beth Shalom. Dinner will begin about 5:45pm and we are accepting Salads or Desserts if you wish to bring them. If you are unable to bring a dish, the most important item for you to bring is YOU and YOUR Family!!! This would be a great evening to invite Jewish friends who are not affiliated with a synagogue, allow them to meet our members and families. Bobby Spiegel is coordinating this evening’s dinner and if anyone wishes to assist, please connect with him at 951.733.1836.

Please RSVP by Feb 2 to Bobby at 951.733.1836 If you wish to become involved with the Membership Committee, please contact Bob Stone at 951.737.7880

Salk spent his last years searching for a vaccine against AIDS. He died on June 23, 1995 at the age of 80 in La Jolla, California. His life’s philosophy is memorialized at the Institute with his now famous quote: “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality." CBS School to Walk! November was a devastating time for families in Haifa, Israel. Fires ravaged the seaside town by the hands of 25 reported arsonists, depleting the beautiful trees that surround Haifa. On Sunday, February 5th at 10:00 a.m., Sunday School students will be participating in a Walk-A-Thon to raise funds to purchase and plant trees in the CBS Grove. In celebration of Tu B'Shevat and in the spirit of mitzvoth, our students will walk laps in front of the temple building for one hour to raise funds. Students will be asking congregants, family, and friends, to donate funds by the lap or a flat amount. Please support our students efforts to replant trees in Israel by submitting mitzvah monies to the Temple/ School NO LATER than Sunday, February 19th, 2017. Cash or checks made payable to CBS.

CBS Families and Friends of CBS In order to make the Legacy Luncheon's Silent and Live Auctions a success this year, we need the help of everyone who reads this newsletter. Every family needs to contribute a gift card/certificate for a restaurant, sporting event, or entertainment venue (even a stay at a hotel would be great) and put what you purchase in the Legacy Box in the office. We absolutely need these items as soon as possible for the auction. Your membership statement will reflect this donation. Please contact Renee Miller at 909 228-5945 if you have any questions. Thank you.

Our little shul is so fortunate to have members so involved in charities, and good deeds. Each month we are seeking to highlight member families and individuals who are involved in other areas, beyond the synagogue!

This month we are extremely proud to share that Pete D’Agostino was recognized by the Corona Norco Unified School District in partnership with the Corona Chamber of Commerce—for his involvement with heading up the Stem program. Uniquely enough, Pete utilized his synagogue family—and many

members to help him put on the 2nd annual Robotics Competition hosted in Corona. This full day activity brought students in from all over southern California, some driving as far away as Ventura and Simi Valley areas.

Congratulations Pete! And thank you to his synagogue volunteers— Ilana D’Agostino, Pam D’Agostino, Seth D’Agostino, Shirli Driz, Jessie Rouman, David Schulman, Saul Shulman, Bobby Spiegel, Isaac Spiegel, Joshua Spiegel, Karen Spiegel and Adam Talbert.

CBS Children prepare for World Wide Wrap Annually, Congregation Beth Shalom participates in a global program—World Wide Wrap. An effort to bring Jews together throughout the world, one day, the first Sunday in February, Jews around the globe will ‘lay’ Tefillin. Tefillin is one of the most important Mitzvot (precepts) of the Torah. It has been observed and treasured for thousands of years, right down to the present day. The Torah mentions it more than once, but most explicitly in Deut. 6:8 "You shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they should be for a reminder between your eyes." A special thank you to Cantor Bruce Shapiro for purchasing the items for our Religious School students.

Join us Sunday, February 5 at 9:30am to be part of this global effort—at Congregation Beth Shalom

Education

During the month of January our students were given an amazing educational opportunity. They were able to view a video about Tefillin . They also were able to make their own Tefillin. This opportunity is thanks to Cantor Bruce's thoughtfulness and generosity. These activities are leading up to the World Wide Wrap which will be held on February 5 during Religious School. Please join us. It will be a great time for all in attendance. Purim is not too far away. It is time to start our planning. Our Religious School is beginning work on our Mish Loch Manot fundraiser. Our students do much of the preparation, so please support our students. Marci Rouman Education Director

Spirituality On Friday evening February 10, the seventh grade class will lead Shabbat services. The three students in the class, Amanda Williams, Ilana D’Agostino, and Philip Ramdsdell will become B’nai Mitzvot this spring and fall. It will be an exciting service. Sunday, February 5 will be our annual World Wide Wrap at the synagogue in the morning. The Brotherhood will be serving breakfast starting at 8:00 for $5.00 a person or $10.00 a family. We want to continue to break our record from the previous year of wrapping more than 53 adults and children. I know we can do it so put it on your calendar and join us. Purim will be here before you know it. The Cantor will be reading the Megillah and the students in the Religious School will be acting it out. It should be an exciting evening, Please plans on attending on Saturday evening. March 11 at 6:30 PM.

Upcoming Onegs

Hosting an Oneg is a way for members to share their happiness, to honor/remember a loved one, or merely do a Mitzvah. If you wish to host an Oneg, simply contact Gail Koren at (951) 688-1709 or (951) 204-4757.

When shopping, look for dairy items with a Kosher symbol, as our synagogue kitchen must remain Kosher.

Should the synagogue not have a host, then we will serve Challah and wine – with the traditional blessings.

By making a donation of $125 to Congregation Beth Shalom, we will shop for you.

We appreciate your help for set-up and clean-up, if you are physically able.

Thank You for your kind participation.

WHY Sponsor an Oneg Shabbat

In Ma*gein A*vot (You Shield Our Ancestors), the line with "oneg" translates to "sated with pleasure". What better way to get to know other Congregants than by "breaking challah" together? After an uplifting musical service, we adjourn to "Happy Hour"! Every Member of our congregation is a welcoming tool of Membership where everyone benefits.
