49 JUNE Underground/Longwall Mining Issue teel Nation Steel Buildings, Inc. is in the process of completing eight Modular Prep Plants and Material Handling facilities throughout the United States and Canada. As part of a Design-Build process with Taggart Global, LLC (Pittsburgh) Steel Nation designs, details, manufactures and erects clear-span custom engineered steel buildings as an envelope encompassing all of the plant processing equipment. These modern, technologically advanced plants are furnished with 25 Ton Overhead Bridge Cranes, allowing plant personnel to safely and quickly perform maintenance, replace screens, or when needed, to move entire units and tramming to a “drop bay” accessible by truck on the ground floor. To minimize the weight of conventional steel, Taggart and Steel Nation designed the project as two separate structures: the processing units sit on independent structures while the outer shell is a separate clear-span steel building. This allows the interior structural steel to be designed with minimal environmental snow & wind loads, and transferring seismic, snow, wind, crane and collateral loads to the outer shell steel building. The resultant design reduced the quantity of structural steel required for a typical plant by nearly 30 percent, representing around 25 percent in total cost savings. Steel Nation uses “Fast-Track” Design-to-Delivery in 6 to 8 weeks. After the foundations and processing equipment are in place, Steel Nation Erects 300 TPH plants in 4 weeks, 400 TPH plants in 6 weeks and 2,500 TPH plants in 12 weeks, enabling a faster plant commissioning, particularly in the winter months when equipment must be enclosed in a heated environment. Usually between 70 – 120 Feet tall, with massive 25 Ton Cranes, these plants separate, clean and process from 300 to 2,500 tons of coal per hour.
