The Indiana University Jacobs school of Music community will forever remember, with great affection, the five Jacobs school students—chris carducci, Garth Eppley, Georgina Joshi, Zachary Novak, and Robert samels—who lost their lives in April 2006.

Thanks to a recent gift of $1 million from the Georgina Joshi Foundation Inc., the school has established the “Five Friends Master class series” to honor in perpetuity the lives of these five talented students.

This annual series of lectures, master classes, and residencies by a number of the world’s leading musicians and teachers focuses on areas of interest most relevant to the lives of the five friends—voice performance, choral conducting,

early music, music theory, composition, and opera.“The establishment of this endowment makes

possible the appearance in Bloomington of the leading figures in their fields, to the great benefit of our current students, reminding us all of the particular professional focus that each of the five friends held and the value they themselves placed on professional engagement activities,” said Gwyn Richards, Jacobs dean. “What a very special addi-tion to our school!”

The Georgina Joshi Foundation was established in 2007 as the vision of Georgina Joshi’s mother, Louise Addicott-Joshi, to provide educational and career development opportunities for young musicians and to encourage and support public performance of music.

The gift to the school establishes a permanent way for the world to learn about each of the five friends and their musical talents and passions, and to encourage the development of similar talents and passions in current and future music students.

This endowment will be administered by the IU Foundation.

For its inaugural season of 2012-13, the series welcomed visits from choral conductor simon carrington; baroque violinist Judy Tarling; composers Joseph schwantner and Joan Tower; and music theorists Brian Newbould, Janet schmalfeldt, and Joseph straus. •

Indiana University’s famed Marching Hundred has taken another significant step toward its goal of constructing a new practice facility, thanks to a gift of $500,000 from Bloomington’s cook Group Inc.

“The latest gift from the cook Group, earmarked by carl cook, is a major step toward our goal of building a new Marching Hundred Hall,” said David Woodley, now in his twentieth year as director of athletic bands at IU. “We are very fortunate to have carl cook on our side while building this new structure.”

cook said it’s especially gratifying for him to be part of this project because the Marching Hundred was so important to his father, the late Bill cook—founder of the company and longtime Bloomington philanthropist.

“My father and former Marching Hundred director Ray cramer were close friends,” cook said. “And my father always felt that a permanent home for the Marching Hundred was one of the great unmet needs of the school of Music and the Athletic Department.”

Through the generosity of a number of private donors—including col. Jack I. and Dora Hamlin, who pledged $1 million last year—the Jacobs school is well on its way to obtaining the necessary funds needed to complete the hall.

The cook Group’s gift, along with the Hamlin gift, will be administered by the IU Foundation.

This year, in a groundbreaking strategic partnership, Indianapolis Opera joined the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, home of IU Opera Theater, to present two performances of American composer Philip Glass’s seminal opera Akhnaten at Clowes Memorial Hall in Indianapolis.

These performances were given in addition to the school’s four performances at the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington.

We would like to extend our most sincere appreciation to the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation Inc., the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, and the Indiana University Office of the President for making the collaboration and the performances in Indianapolis possible.

Through their investment and their belief in the partnership between IU Opera Theater and Indianapolis Opera, these organizations gave Jacobs School of Music students a unique opportunity to share their musical talents with the Indianapolis community.
