Fr. Steve’s Teaching for Consideration: The Sacrament of Confirmation

“Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to

them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it

had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then

they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.” -Acts of the Apostles 8: 14-17

This weekend, on Sunday afternoon, at St. Mary’s in Silver Bay, our young people from Holy Spirit and St. Mary’s will be celebrating the sacrament of confirmation with Bishop Sirba. This is of course a powerful and profound moment in the spiritual lives of these young people, and I first ask that

you keep them in your thoughts and prayers this weekend as they received the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred chrism oil by our Bishop. I thought I would take this opportunity not only to congratulate our young confirmands, and to ask you to pray for them, but to speak briefly about the sacrament of confirmation itself. What is confirmation all about? What effects does it produce in the soul of the believer? Why do we do it? Well, confirmation is one of the three sacraments of initiation, the other two being baptism and the Holy Eucharist. Taken together, these three sacraments fully initiate us into the life of God’s grace. Like baptism, which it completes, confirmation is one of only three sacraments (the other being the sacrament of holy orders) than can never be repeated- it can only be celebrated once in a person’s lifetime. The reason for this is that like baptism and holy orders, reception of the sacrament of confirmation effects a permanent and irreversible change in the soul. Theologically, we say that the person who is confirmed receives a spiritual mark, or seal, as belonging to Christ and having been enrolled in His service (you can think of it as a kind of spiritual “tattoo”). There are several spiritual fruits that accompany the reception of the sacrament of confirmation. But first, because there is often confusion about this, I think it appropriate to state what confirmation is not. Confirmation is not graduation from the Church. If anything, confirmation is a relatively early step on the path of discipleship. It is, after all, one of the sacraments of initiation. Confirmation is also not a sign of a person’s becoming an “adult” in the Church. In fact, the age at which the sacrament of confirmation is imparted changes from region to region. In our diocese, the Bishop has determined that it is typically received in mid to late teen years. But in some other dioceses in our country, young children (seven years old) receive confirmation before their First Communion. And in the Eastern Catholic Church tradition, the sacrament of confirmation is conferred right after baptizing an infant, in the same celebration. So clearly, it is not about becoming an adult in the Church. So what does the sacrament of confirmation bestow upon the recipient? Here, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is very helpful. It lists the fruits (spiritual results) of the reception of confirmation as follows (CCC #1303): “Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace: - it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!"; - it unites us more firmly to Christ; - it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us (wisdom, understanding, knowledge, piety, counsel, fortitude, fear of the Lord); - it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.” Let us pray diligently for our young people who are to receive this great and holy sacrament! God bless you!

Confirmation:

Please join us this Sunday, April 23 at 3 pm for confirmation. We will have a reception after with cake & coffee.

FORMED.org

Formed is not just for adults: “He Is Risen” is just one of the many movies for kids. In this animated presentation, children join Brother Francis as he celebrates the power and splendor of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It includes key points in the life of Jesus Christ, His death on the cross, triumph over death, and ascension to the Father using joyful, visualized song that fills our hearts with praise to God! Steeped in Scripture and instruction, “He is Risen” is a wonderful reminder of the reality of God’s power and presence!
