Pancake Breakfast The Knights of Columbus will serve their famous pancake breakfast after Mass on Sunday, March 18. Please plan to join us for a delicious breakfast & great fellowship. Free will donation.
Soup Supper & Stations of the Cross Join us on Fridays during Lent. Soup served 4:45 -5:30 pm, followed by Stations at 5:45 pm. These delicious soups will be prepared by volunteer cooks. Donations to Operation Rice Bowl will be accepted during the soup supper. This is another great opportunity to enrich your Lenten season.
Lenten Bible Study: Be Restored by God’s Mercy Join us on Sunday, March 4 as we begin week 2 of our 5 week Bible study “FORGIVEN.” FORGIVEN is a beautiful study on the transforming power of mercy in the Sacrament of Confession. The Bible Study Group meets Sunday evenings, 6:30 - 8 pm, in the Social Hall. New members are always welcome. Don’t worry if you miss a week; you can still join us on the journey with no pressure to make it every week.
Want to learn more about Pope St. John Paul II? World-renowned theologian and author of “Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II,” George Weigel, will be speaking at St. John’s Church in Duluth on Monday, March 12. The evening will begin with Mass at 6:30 pm, followed by a presentation and book-signing by Weigel, who was personally asked by the Pope to write his biography. There is no cost and no registration required.

Did you know you can request a Mass intention? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for a variety of reasons; for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person, someone who is struggling or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. There are the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. The suggested offering at St. Mary’s is $5. If you wish to request a Mass intention, please contact Cindy in the parish office.

Family Faith Formation
We will meet on Wednesday, March 7 at 6 pm. We’ll start our night with dinner at 6 pm, followed by classes at 6:30 pm. Adult Faith Formation is open to everyone not just the parents. This week we will hear about “The Story Behind the Story.” Child care is provided for younger children so everyone has an opportunity to grow in their faith.

Collect for the 3rd Sunday of Lent
This weekend, after a brief hiatus from our pattern of considering and dissecting the opening prayer (collect) at Sunday Mass in our bulletin articles, I would like to return now to that practice. This
weekend’s collect is incredibly rich and complex; so much so in fact that there is no practical way for me to try to tease out all of its richness in the space provided on this page! So, we will have to settle for discussing a few points of the collect. First, after addressing God the Father for Who He is- the “author of every mercy and of all goodness (right there is some-thing that could occupy our minds for a long time- God is the author, the maker, of each and every single mercy and goodness that we experience in our lives!), we then address Him according to What He has done: He has shown us a “remedy for sin” by giving to us the spiritual practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer helps us to draw closer to God, and the more that we do that, the more we will see how our sins separate us from God and the more we will detest them. Fasting helps to curb our tendency toward immediate gratification of wants and desires and so helps increase our self-control to resist temptation. Almsgiving makes us more generous and so helps us to be grateful to God for His gifts- another means of recognizing and avoiding sin. After addressing God according to who He is and what He has done for us, we then ask Him for what we need: in summary, we ask Him to be kind to us who are sinners and to raise up our sinful and frustrated hearts by the power of His mercy. First, we ask God to look upon our confession of our lowliness with His grace. This line of the prayer reminds us of one of the most basic principles of our relationship with God: growth in our friendship with God is only possible for those who first are willing to humbly admit their sinfulness, their lowliness, and their need for God’s help and grace. This principle flies directly in the face of the currents of our modern culture which incessantly encourages us to praise and honor our-selves, that each of us is the greatest thing since sliced bread. All one has to do is to watch television for a half-hour and notice how many of the commercials in some way talk about how very unique, special, awesome and perfect you are just the way you are.
Now, of course, each human person is unique and made in the image and likeness of God. Each person is loved beyond comprehension by God. However, we are also sinners, all of us. We are creatures who often fail in our duty to do what is right and to avoid evil. Far from being “perfect just as we are,” we are desperately in need of God’s mercy and grace to help us to become the holy and good persons that God always intended for us to be. It is only when we have confessed our weakness, our tendency to sin, and our need for God’s help that God can then begin to do His best work in us. God can only fill up those with His grace who have emptied themselves of self: if we are full of ourselves, if we are filled with self-love, then we will have no room for God.
Finally, we ask that as we confess and admit our lowliness and our need for God’s help to do what is right and just in our lives, we may also be lifted up by God’s mercy. If we genuinely take the time to examine our consciences and consider our sins and failures, each of us will recognize that we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The sad reality is that to keep us from having to face our stricken conscience, again, our culture tells us to keep busy, keep distracted, keep up the noise, so that our conscience is drowned out and we don’t have to face our failures and mistakes.
Unfortunately, doing this will not bring us the peace we all long for- it will only delay the inevitable. All of us will have to face our conscience and acknowledge our sins and our weakness. The beautiful thing is that the story does not end there! God’s mercy, which is undeserved and infinitely abundant, will wash over and cleanse those who humbly admit their weakness and sins and ask for God’s help. God waits to refresh us, to lift us up by His mercy, to restore us to grace, and to help us to live lives of holiness. But He will never force His mercy upon us; we must ask for it. This Lent, let’s resolve to humbly admit our need for God and His mercy, especially by making use of the sacrament of reconciliation, and experience the lasting peace and heavenly joy of having our spirits lifted up by God’s amazing mercy!

Holy Spirit Lenten Fish Fry is Back!
Our next fish fry will be on Friday evening, March 23rd,
2018, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. All parishioners are invited
and encouraged to attend and enjoy delicious fish, potatoes,
coleslaw and desserts. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for
children ages 5-10, and children ages 4 and under eat
free! All proceeds from the fish fry will go towards the
parish building fund. Please plan to join us, and invite a
friend!
Volunteers Needed to Help at the Fish Fry:
Putting on a fish fry at the parish requires a lot of hard
work and coordination. Thankfully, we have several
parishioners who have graciously agreed to take leadership
roles in the various areas of work. But we will be in need of
parishioners to assist in the set-up, serving and clean-up of
the fish fry's. There is a sign-up sheet at the back of the
church where you can sign up if you would like to be called
to help with the fish fry. Please consider volunteering to
help make our Lenten fish fry's a great success!

24 Hours for the Lord Pope Francis has again called for 24 hours of Adoration and
Confession! Noon March 9th—Noon March 10th there will
be Confession and Adoration available at St. Benedict
Church, 1419 St. Benedict St., Duluth. Please set aside some
time within these 24 hours to make use of the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and visit Jesus. There will also be a daily
Mass at 8:00 AM Saturday morning.

Stations of the Cross:
The Stations of the Cross will be prayed every Friday
evening during the Lenten season at 7:00 pm in the Church.
Please come and join us as we walk the way of the cross
with our Lord.
Opportunity for Parish Lenten Retreat:
On Fridays during the Lenten Season, there will be an
opportunity for growing deeper in our relationship with
God and our life of prayer. Holy Spirit will be hosting a
weekly hour-long presentation on discipleship. We will be
watching a DVD series hosted by the Rev. John Riccardo
with an opportunity for discussion afterwards. This retreat
series will be held in the Holy Spirit parish hall on most
Friday evenings during Lent, from 6:00 pm until Stations of
the Cross at 7:00 pm upstairs in the Church. The next
session will be Friday, March 9th at 6:00 pm. Everyone is
invited to attend!
New Stained Glass Windows
Some of you may have noticed the two beautiful stained
glass windows that now grace the wall of our Church’s
parish hall. These two stained glass windows were given to
Holy Spirit as a gift from Mike and Linda Hoffman. The
windows were originally commissioned by the Hoffman
family for another church which has subsequently closed.
The woodworking, framing and backlighting was done by
one of our parishioners, Dr. Shawn McMahon. We are
grateful to the Hoffmans and to Dr. McMahon for their
