Welcome to St. André’s Parish! No matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or what brings you here, we’re so glad to have you with us. St. André Bessette (1845-1937) spent much of his life serving as the door-keeper of his religious community; like him, we strive to open doors for our neighbors to experi-ence the loving mercy of God. May Jesus fill your heart with his grace and peace!

From Fr. Joe…

This Sunday, October 7, is the first anniversary of the ordina-tion of Nick Haas and Brent Charland as Deacons. They’re such naturals in this role, it seems like they’ve been at it forev-er! We thank them and Deacon Bryan Bashaw for their faithful service here at St. André’s.

It’s a pleasure to share the news that one of our young people is being honored by Catholic Charities. Ciara LeRoy (daughter of Jeff and Aimee LeRoy), a junior at Franklin Academy, youth rep-resentative on our Pastoral Council, and faithful altar server of many years, is receiving the 2018 Legacy Award from Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Ogdensburg. The award is given to a young person who displays ―devoted and unselfish service to the people of the North Country, exemplifying the spirit and ide-als...of service and social action, of justice and charity.‖ The award will be given at the annual Caritas Dinner in Ogdensburg on October 24th. Congratulations, Ciara! You’re very deserving of this honor. (If you’d like to attend the dinner, it’s $45 and RSVP is required by October 16; reservation forms are available at the parish office.)

The sign of peace is back. During the month of September, we ―fasted‖ from this rite (which is, in fact, always optional) to stand in solidarity with the victims of clergy sexual abuse who have been robbed of the precious gift of peace. Some parishioners asked me if we could omit it permanently, since they felt the quiet at this point helped them to prepare better for receiving Holy Communion. I’m not ready to take that step, but it might be something we could do from time-to-time (say, during Lent) to help us remember what this moment is truly about. It's not a chance to say, ―Hi! How are you?‖ to as many folks as possible (which is a great thing for us to do on our way into or out from Mass), but a warm ritual gesture which expresses ―peace, com-munion, and charity.‖ As the Church directs, ―it is appropriate that each person, in a sober manner, offer the Sign of Peace only to those who are nearest…While the Sign of Peace is being given, it is permissible to say, The peace of the Lord be with you always, to which the reply is Amen‖ (GIRM, 82, 154).

Questions will no doubt be coming in about a turkey dinner at St. Helen’s this fall. Unfortunately, due to some scheduling con-flicts, we will not be having one this year. We do plan to have it back in 2019. And watch for an announcement soon about a coming special event in Chasm Falls… For years now, I’ve posted a written version of my Sunday homi-lies online, but I’ve found that taking the time to type them up on Sunday afternoons is becoming more and more of a burden. So I’m experimenting with recording them. If you see me fiddling with something at the pulpit, that’s what I’m up to. You can lis-ten to them on my blog, From Empty Hands.

A Prayer for Healing

Hear the humble prayer of your people, God our Father, as we implore your mercy. Bring healing to all who have suffered physical, emotional, or sexual abuse at the hands of your ministers and restore them to fullness of life. Forgive your Church for the immense evil that has been committed and the great harm that has been done. Grant the grace of true repentance to all who have broken sacred trust, de-stroyed precious innocence, and failed to protect your beloved children entrusted to their pastoral care. Reconcile us to one another and never allow us be parted from you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“The Lord heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)

Little Flower’s Girls’ Club Growing holier, one virtue at a time

What is it? A mother/daughter program that strives to provide young Catholic girls ages 5 to 12 an opportunity to gath-er and learn about their Catholic heritage, faith and traditions. Little Flowers Girls will learn what it means to be an authen-tic Catholic girl and woman. Little Flow-ers Girls’ Club provides a strong founda-

tion on which to build, whether the young girl is called to a life of consecration to our Lord, as a single woman, or as a wife and mother.

How will we do this? By using saints’ biographies, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Sacred Scripture, the girls will learn the basics of the Catholic faith in a fun faith- and friendship-filled environment.

When & where? We will meet twice a month (on a Thursday) from October to June, at Frassati House from 6:00pm-7:30pm. First meeting is scheduled for October 11th!

Cost: Registration fee is $35, which will cover the cost of a sash, virtue badges, member’s guide, and craft materials.

You can find registration forms at the back of the church or on the parish website. Please have your registration forms and fee in to the parish office as soon as possible.

St. Therese of Lisieux, pray for us!

Rosary Procession

Sunday, October 7, following the 11:00am Mass

We will process with a statue of Our Lady while praying the Holy Rosary through Arsenal Green, and then along Elm Street and Main Street, back to Notre Dame Church. United with Catholics across the country, come join this prayerful witness to our faith and our devotion to the Mother of God!

HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL

Numerous studies show that parents place their children at Holy Family School for three reasons: 1. A total education, which includes growth in religious awareness and an appreciation of morals and values. Ac-

cording to Catholic School Data compiled from the NCEA, there are a total of 6,525 Catholic elementary and middle schools in the US representing a total enrollment of 1,915,836 students. (Which happens to be a huge relief to taxpayers locally and nationally.) 2. A superior academic achievement of Holy Family School stu-dents. Catholic school students have a 99% high school gradua-tion rate and 85% of graduates go to college. (Holy Family School falls in a range above at about 89% for college bound stu-dents.) 3. The secure and disciplined learning environments provided by Holy Family School. (Teachers and staff receive training in Vir-tus, a program that ensures the protection of students.)

es.) We have a dedicated core of volunteers who make Commun-ion calls to the homebound…but we are in need of some more. PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE

Malone Catholic Charities Relocates Office Closed October 28th through November 3rd

On Monday, November 5th, Malone Catholic Charities (MCC) will open the doors to its new office at 6 Cedar Street (corner of Raymond and Cedar Streets, blue house attached to the former Fleury’s Flooring). Office entrance will be on the Cedar Street side. MCC will continue its usual schedule of Mondays through Thursdays, 8:00 AM through 4:00 PM. Its telephone, (518) 483-1460 and FAX number (518) 483-8240 will remain the same. For many years the MCC office has been located at 57 Rennie Street, a property owned by St. Andre Bessette Parish; a reloca-tion was necessary due to the changing needs of the parish com-munity and MCC’s need for additional space. The Good Samari-tan Food Pantry will remain in its current location at 57 Rennie Street under the management of the parish. MCC will continue the vital services currently offered, including, Baby and Materni-ty World, Diaper Supply Program, Personal Hygiene Closet, Par-enting Education, Case Management and the distribution of gen-tly used household goods and furniture. MCC staff is excited that the new, larger office space will provide opportunities to expand programs to youth and seniors, as well as other community ser-vices. Malone Catholic Charities will be closed during the week of October 28th through November 3rd in order to move.
