PASTORAL SHARINGS

In this weekend’s Gospel Jesus healed a woman who was plagued with hemorrhages for twelve years. She spent all she had on doctors and only got worse. Jesus also raised up Jairus’ twelve-year-old daughter from the dead. Jairus was a synagogue official. He begged Jesus to help him. One of the things that Jesus wanted to continue through the church was His healing ministry. The two sacraments of healing are confession and anointing of the sick. Confession reconciles us to God and gives us sanctifying grace meaning union with God. The separation from God that we have

through sin is repaired. In confession we also receive peace and serenity of conscience, and spiritual consolation and an increase of spiritual strength to live the Christian life. Anointing of the sick does a number of things for us. The first grace of this sacrament is one of strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that go with the condition of serious illness or the frailty of old age. This grace is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who renews trust and faith in God and strengthens against the temptations of the evil one, the temptation to discouragement and anguish in the face of death. This assistance from the Lord by the power of His Spirit is meant to lead the sick person to healing of the soul, but also of the body if such is God's will. When we receive anointing of the sick we receive union with the passion of Christ. By the grace of this sacrament the sick person receives the strength and the gift of uniting himself more closely to Christ's Passion: in a certain way he is consecrated to bear fruit by configuration to the Savior's redemptive Passion. Suffering, a consequence of original sin, acquires a new meaning; it becomes a participation in the saving work of Jesus. Anointing of the sick can also be a preparation for the final journey. If the sacrament of anointing of the sick is given to all who suffer from serious illness and infirmity, even more rightly is it given to those at the point of departing this life; so it is also called sacramentum exeuntium (the sacrament of those departing). The Anointing of the Sick completes our conformity to the death and Resurrection of Christ, just as Baptism began it. It completes the holy anointings that mark the whole Christian life: that of Baptism which sealed the new life in us, and that of Confirmation which strengthened us for the combat of this life. This last anointing fortifies the end of our earthly life like a solid rampart for the final struggles before entering the Father's house. Another good time to receive anointing of the sick is before getting surgery. I am always happy to help out with anointing of the sick or hearing confessions. The healing work of the church is also done by its members bringing Jesus into other people’s lives and helping them on their journey with God in charitable works. Just encouraging a person to pray can help bring them healing and closer to Jesus. Blessings, Fr. Greg

THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON Wednesday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. Fr. Greg and the staff at St. Florian’s Parish wish everyone a safe and fun holiday!! INDEPENDENCE DAY, also referred to as the FOURTH OF JULY is a federal holiday in the

United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress decided that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire. The Congress actually voted to declare independence two days earlier on July 2nd. Coincidentally, both John Adams & Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the U.S. died on the same day, July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, James Monroe, another Founding Father who was elected as President, also died on July 4 (1831). Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, w as born on July 4, 1872, so far he is the only U. S. President to have been born on Independence Day. Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue; many take advantage of the day off and, in some years, a long weekend to gather with relatives or friends. Decorations are generally colored red/white/blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades are often held in the morning, before families get-togethers, while fireworks displays occur in the evening after dark at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares. taken from Wikipedia

and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all

around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I

have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the Summer season.

Draw me closer to You this Summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter

where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of

Your presence, and light my path with Your Word and Counsel.

As I enjoy Your creation, create in me a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You.
