Dr. Susan Albertine—Keynote Speaker

A poet/lyricist, advocate for literacy and liberal education, and former school teacher, Susan Albertine is a senior scholar at the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) and a visiting research professor at Osaka University (Japan) at the Center for the Study of Higher Education and Global Admissions. At AAC&U, she directed the LEAP States Initiative from 2008 to 2017 and was vice president of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Student Success at AAC&U (2010-2016). Albertine received her BA from Cornell University, her MA from the State University of New York at Cortland, and her PhD from the University of Chicago, all in English and American literature. As a professor, she taught American literature and English composition at St. Olaf College and at Susquehanna University. Later she served as assistant to the provost, University of Pennsylvania, and then vice provost, Temple University, where she began her national work in higher education reform. In 2002, she became Professor of English and Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the College of New Jersey, where she served until joining AAC&U in 2008.

Book coverHer publications span topics in American literature, public and global health education, and liberal learning in college. Her literacy work began with nearly a decade of teaching in rural schools in upstate New York and at Chicago State University. Her most recent co-authored book is Becoming a Student-Ready College: A New Culture of Leadership for Student Success (Jossey-Bass 2016), with Tia Brown McNair, Michelle Asha Cooper et al. She served on the board of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences from 2002 to 2008 and as president-elect in 2008. In 2015 she won the Joseph Katz Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Practice and Discourse of General and Liberal Education, by the Association for General and Liberal Studies (AGLS). She was a member of the Framing the Future Task Force, Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health, 2011-2015. From 2011 to 2017 she served on the Advisory Board, National Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She has recently served as a member of the National Academies’ of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Integration of Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Cynthia D. Shapira—Board of Governors

Shapira is president of the Shapira Foundation, leading the development and implementation of the foundation’s various initiatives, including the Onward Israel and Comprehensive Excellence project. She served as vice chair of Governor Tom Wolf’s transition team and serves on the Governor’s Advisory Board on Education and Workforce Development. She also is a member of the board of the Say Yes to Education Foundation. She was appointed by Governor Tom Corbett to the Pennsylvania Commission on Women and was a member of the 2012 Pennsylvania Electoral College. She was recognized by Gov. Wolf and First Lady Frances Wolf as one of this year’s Distinguished Daughters of Pennsylvania, an award that honors women who have shown distinguished service through their professional career and/or voluntary service. She is a trustee of Brandeis University and serves as a board member of the Allegheny County Airport Authority. She previously was chair of the Pennsylvania Center for Women in Politics at Chatham University and served on the boards of Point Park University, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, The Pittsburgh Promise, United Way of Allegheny County, and WQED Pittsburgh. She is immediate past chair of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. She was a management consultant for twenty years in the non-profit and education sectors, including ten years as executive vice president of Pappas Consulting Group, Inc. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Wellesley College and a Master of Public Administration degree from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. She was re-elected to her third term as Board chair in July.

Dr. Daniel Greenstein—Chancellor

Dr. Daniel Greenstein became the fifth chancellor of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education on September 4, 2018. In that role, he serves as chief executive officer of the State System, which operates Pennsylvania’s fourteen public universities, serving more than 100,000 students. The chancellor works with the Board of Governors to recommend and develop overall policies for the System.

Greenstein previously led the Postsecondary Success strategy at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he worked with other higher education leaders across the country on initiatives designed to raise educational-attainment levels and to promote economic mobility, especially among low-income and minority students. He developed and implemented a national strategy for increasing the number of degrees awarded and for reducing the attainment gaps among majority and non-majority students at U.S. colleges and universities. Before joining the foundation, Greenstein was Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Programs for the University of California (UC) system. In that role, he oversaw system-wide academic planning and programs, including the University of California Press; the California Digital Library; the UC system’s Education Abroad Program; internship programs in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento; and UC Online Education.

Greenstein has created and led several internet-based academic information services in the United States and the United Kingdom, and served on boards and acted in strategic consulting roles for educational, cultural heritage, and information organizations. He began his academic career as a senior lecturer in Modern History at Glasgow University in Scotland.He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate from the University of Oxford. An enthusiastic cyclist, Dan and his wife, Melissa, have two children.

Sarah Bauder

Sarah Bauder is a strategic implementer with more than 28 years of experience leading and initiating innovative student success strategies. She spent 23 years in higher education, most recently at the University of Maryland, College Park, developing innovative packaging strategies and student success programs to help marginalized and underserved students graduate from college.

In addition to higher education, Bauder worked at the Society for Human Resource Management where she was responsible for developing an organization wide transformational strategy. Prior to SHRM, Bauder worked at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation where she was responsible for a $1.7 billion scholarship program and led the creation and launch of a $420m program. Bauder also served on the Postsecondary Success team developing strategies based on data and evidence to drive campus-wide innovative change from college access to gainful employment.

Bauder’s passion, insights, and ability to unite disparate concepts into transformative innovation have gained the attention of a broad variety of stakeholders. Most notably, she has served on the Executive Board for the National Association of Federal Student Aid Administrators, testified before Congress on three occasions on student aid reform, presented to Ben Bernanke and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, served as a representative for four-year public institutions on both President Bush and President Obama’s Higher Education task force for redundant and burdensome regulations, and was elected three times to serve on the Negotiated Rulemaking team.

Sarah has traveled globally to China and Dubai collaborating with officials on the development of programs designed to uplift marginalized and underrepresented citizens for economic development and growth. She also volunteers as an advisor for business philanthropists most recently in Doha and Saudi Arabia, in the creation of unique and impactful programs for those regions.

Bauder holds a Master of Arts with honors from University of Maryland, College Park in Policy, Planning and Leadership and a bachelor’s degree with honors from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in Literature and Language Arts. Sarah has been actively engaged in the community by serving on the Executive Board of Generation Hope, the Advisory Board for the Smith School of Business, and the Advisory Board for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Zebulun R. Davenport

Dr. Zebulun Davenport is the Vice President for Student Affairs at West Chester University. He provides leadership to multiple units that positively impact students’ lives on campus. Davenport earned a Doctorate in Higher Education and Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, a M.Ed. in College Student Personnel Administration, and a B.S. in Communications/Public Relations with a minor in Human Services from James Madison University. Dr. Davenport’s publications include co-authoring a book entitled First-Generation College Students – Understanding and Improving the Experience from Recruitment to Commencement. He has presented at workshops for numerous public agencies, educational institutions, state, regional and national conferences, as well as to thousands of college students and professionals throughout his career.

Dr. Michele Norwood

Dr. Norwood serves as the Associate Vice Provost for Student Success and the Director of the University College at Indiana University. During her time at IUP she has served in several roles, most recently as the Associate Dean in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, prior to that as the Assistant Dean in the College of Fine Arts. In her role as AVP, Michele works collaboratively with all divisions of the university to provide support to students, their families, and the entire community. Michele has more than 30 years of experience in education; she completed her Master’s degree at IUP and earned her doctoral degree at the University of Pittsburgh in Higher Education Administration.

Vivak Patel

Mr. Vivak Patel is the Associate Director of Enrollment Management at Millersville University where he is responsible for ensuring that undergraduate enrollment goals are met through admission, retention and scholarship management. Mr. Patel has also served as a Research Analyst at Millersville, helping to educate the staff and faculty about success indicators impacting student retention and persistence. He has developed predictive models for Admissions to increase enrollment, geo-spatially analyzed data for targeted marketing advertisements and leveraged admissions travel and financial data to improve retention and persistence rates. Patel earned a B.A. in Earth Science and Geography from Millersville University and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Louisiana State University.

Dr. B. Donta Truss

The career of Dr. B. Donta Truss reflects his dedication toward strengthening institutions and improving the pathway to higher education for many, especially low-income and first-generation students. As an experienced administrator and educator for the past twenty years, he has served in a variety of capacities, including student success, student affairs, institutional research, planning and effectiveness, accreditation, working with faculty members, student retention, admissions and recruitment, data sensitivity, data-driven decision making, advising, grant writing, and program development and supervision.

Dr. Truss currently serves as the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success at Shippensburg University.

Dr. David Wilmes

Dr. David Wilmes currently serves as the Associate Provost for Student Success at Slippery Rock University. In this role, he provides strategic leadership and oversight to areas such as Residence Life, Student Conduct, Student Support Services, Students’ with Disabilities, Veteran’s Resource Center, Pride Center and Women’s Center. Dr. Wilmes has spent the last 20 years within the field of higher education providing direct services to students, faculty and staff. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland College Park in Education Policy, a MA from Bowling Green University in Student Personnel and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri where in majored in Psychology. His dissertation focused on the impact of learning communities on career development outcomes.
