By Pastor Patrick

Dear Friends in Christ: Peace be with you. These are the first words Jesus speaks to his disciples who were huddled in a locked room for fear of the Jews following his resurrection. The Bible doesn’t record how well these words helped his loved ones in that moment, but we do know that it is only the peace of Christ that can calm us during difficult times. This is one of those moments for me. Peace be with you. At a special congregational meeting on Sunday, June 16, Trinity Lutheran Church

in Eau Claire, Wisconsin voted to call me as their new lead pastor. I have accepted their call. My last day at Christ the King will be July 23, and I start at Trinity on August 1. This is an amazing and surprising thing, since I was not looking for a new call. Mary Beth and I have been very settled in Mankato and had no intentions of leaving. This opportunity came to my attention through an email, which I read with curiosity, and then deleted. It came up a second time and so I printed the details and showed it to Mary Beth. Again, I did nothing. After the third time this call came to my attention, I sought the counsel of our bishop. You see, we’ve got a great thing going at CTK. While it’s no secret that we’ve been through some transition during the last year, we approached each change with a sense of freshness and new opportunity. We have moved positively through those changes and are even better poised to move forward into God’s preferred future for CTK. Yet, you as a church family will walk into that new future with a new leader with new ideas. Why Eau Claire? We’ve gotten acquainted with the community over the last few years as we visited our daughter, Claire, who’s now a senior majoring in elementary education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. The community has been transformed in recent years, specifically with a downtown revitalization at the confluence of two rivers. Like Mankato, the arts scene is vibrant, and we’ve really enjoyed our time there. We will have a chance to be near water, closer to the area where I was born and have friends and relatives. Trinity is a larger congregation, but similar to CTK in many ways. They had a beloved lead pastor for 27 years. Following his retirement, other key staff moved on and the next lead pastor only stayed two years. Although more change is likely, this congregation is excited about the next phase in its history and believe my gifts and talents are well suited for their needs. The new challenge in a congregation with their own unique needs excites and invigorates me at this stage in my ministerial career. I am deeply thankful for my 12 years at CTK. I came into ministry with a background that set me up for success as your administrative pastor and was able to grow into my pastoral identity with kind and loving members who formed me. You then honored me with a call to senior pastor five years ago. I’ve done my best to serve faithfully in that capacity. You’ve invited me deeply into your lives and have cared and nurtured my family in return. Words cannot fully express my gratitude for my time at CTK. Change is not always easy, and the timing never seems right. But here’s the thing: you have an excellent staff, very capable elected council leaders and an awesome congregation that cares deeply for God’s mission at CTK. Great opportunity lies ahead as you call a new associate pastor and lean into an intentional time of discernment about a new senior pastor. My prayers will be with you, and I ask for your prayers as well. Please stop in and visit if you’re in the Eau Claire area. Peace be with you! Sincerely, Pastor Patrick

Call Committee Corner

The Call Committee continues to meet and has completed second interviews with the candidates. No final decision has been made regarding a recommendation for the Associate Pastor Positon. Discussions and review of information are now the most important steps in the decision making process. Please keep the call committee members in your prayers as deliberation continues for this important decision for CTK.

Summer Youth Musical CTK Summer Musical time is coming up fast for ALL kids entering grades 1-12 (or older)! ”The Kingdom Connection” is a great story about 4 important kings in the Bible. We will hear about their life stories - and the choices they make - and how those choices affect their lives and the lives of others. There are 10 main characters, several smaller parts and at least 7 solos – so we need LOTS of kids to come out for this musical! Tryouts take place on July 9, 10, 16 and 17 from 4-5 PM in the Music Room at Christ the King, or by contacting Chuck at 507-390-5852 (call or text) or [email protected]. No preparation needed – just show up sometime during those hours.

Rehearsals take place August 5-9 from 1:00 – 4:30 PM. Presentations are Saturday, August 10 at 5:30 PM, and Sunday, August 11 at 9:30 AM. We will also present at Grace Lutheran Church in Mankato on Sunday, August 18 at 10:00am with as many of the cast as can make it. You can go online right now at www.ctkmankato.org to register! Please register as soon as possible (by July 22 so we can get the T-shirts ordered)!

There are times when members need a little extra help in their lives. Christ the King’s Meals Ministry provides meals to those with special circumstances when needed. If you would like to be put on this list of those who prepare and deliver a meal to families in crisis, new situations, or in time of sickness, please contact Justine Carlson to be added to our list. Also, if you are ever in need of meals, contact Justine as well!

Prayer Article Series submitted by Pastor Donohue Sarff With Christ in The School of Prayer – by Andrew Murray

Fourth Lesson – “After this manner therefore pray“ or, The Model Prayer

“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven.” Matthew 6:9

Every teacher knows the power of example. They not only tell the child what to do and how to do it, but shows the student how it really can be done. In condescension to our weakness, our Heavenly Father has given us the very words we are to take with us as we draw near to our Father. We have in them a form of prayer in which there breathes the freshness and fullness of the Eternal Life. So simple that the child can lisp it, so divinely rich that it comprehends all that

God can give. A form of prayer that becomes the model and inspiration for all other prayer, and yet always draws us back to itself as the deepest utterance of our souls before our God. That’s the power of the Lord’s Prayer!
