GIS Writing
Using your maps, memories and your notes from these classes, discussions, readings and prep work, respond to the question using the following steps:
1. Planning: Brainstorm & Organize (homework)2. Writing (in-class)
Question: How can spatial technologies help us better understand the 2 types of geography, the 5 themes of geography, and the 3 questions of geography?
Planning/Brainstorming
3 questions, What is where, Why there, Why care
5 themes, Location, Place, Human Environment Interaction, Disasters, and Region
2 types, Human Geography, Physical Geography
Google Maps and ArcGIS are both spatial technologies but they do different things. Google maps is the premium way to understand the human and physical geography, the location, place, part of the Human Environment Interaction, what is where, and region in detail due to the street view feature. On the other hand, ArcGIS is better at explaining the Disasters, why there, why care, and part of the Human Enviornment Interaction, due to the ability to use other peoples statistics and your own. ArcGIS is also better at explaining certain details about topics, that google maps can’t explain, due to the story maps feature and other peoples maps.
If I were to chose a spatial technology to help gain a better understanding of geography I would use ArcGIS, because the amount of research and data that is already made through other maps on ArcGIS is enough to satisfy my geography needs. And that fact that you can add things to the map is great for gaining a better understanding of something. Google maps may work better as a map, but ArcGIS is better as a teaching tool to understand geography.
Hypothesis/Evidence TemplateQuestion: How can spatial technologies like GIS help us better understand the 2 types of geography, the 5 themes of geography, and the 3 questions of geography?
What is the task (in your own words):
I have to explain in a paragraph how technologies like GIS help us understand all the types, themes, and questions of geography.
Key Terms to Discuss:
Spatial Technologies, types of geography, themes of geography, questions of geography,
Hypothesis:
Attempt 1: Digital maps like google maps and ArcGIS can cram more detail and explain more about each location than any map before. Allowing users to apreachait the world more and see all the types and themes of geography. And create there own understanding of why stuff is there, and why they should care.
Attempt 2: Google Maps and ArcGIS are both spatial technologies but they do different things. ArcGIS is also better at explaining certain details about topics, that google maps Socials 9 GIS Writing Page 1
can’t explain, due to the story maps feature and other peoples maps.
Attempt 3: Google maps are also better for everyday useage where as ArcGIS is better for going deeper into geography. Because with the map notes and and the layers, you can find out a lot or explain about a certain detail or aspect. Whereas google maps is good for general useage that people experience everyday (like wanting to know an ideal bus route)
Final: ArcGIS and Google maps may both be spatial technologies, but they achieve different things and can help you understand different aspects of geography, because Google maps helps you get the basic knowledge needed in a simple formant integrated in the most popular search engne in the world. Whereas ArcGIS helps you go into detail on certain aspects of geography and allows you to answer why there and why care better.
Explanation of Idea
With google streetview, you can see certain area in detail, and in some cases you can even navigate the streets through google maps. This gives people a better understandin of the world than ever before. This is why google maps is good at understanding things about the physical geography of places including topographic this, like where certain areas are. For my project I was able to find a dozen lakes in north eastern Manitoba in around 10 minutes, just my zooming in and navigating the area.

Explanation of Idea
ArcGIS can’t compare with google maps in terms of the what is where aspect since it dosen’t have as many things listed on the map, and it, of course, dosen’t have streetview. The basemap is more organized on google maps and google maps functions better as a map for general use. But what it dose have over Google is that you can explain certain aspects of geography better through ArcGIS, which allows it to make up for its losses and help add certain things to the map about location.
