Tonbridge is a medieval market town in the heart of the West Kent countryside, best known for being home to one of England’s finest 13th century motte and bailey castles, as well as its links with Jane Austen.
The town sits on the River Medway which hosts the annual Dragon Boat Race and where visitors can take scenic river walks, have a coffee whilst enjoying a fabulous view or be adventurous and take a boat trip.
Tonbridge has a lively town centre hosting many events and including many independent shops and eateries. In recent years it has become home to pop-ups, such as at Tonbridge Old Fire Station, and a growing art scene. There is something for everyone - from a butchers and fishmongers to great little boutiques, gift shops and a beer cafe.
The burgeoning food scene in Tonbridge now offers visitors a fantastic choice of tasty treats. There is even a monthly award-winning farmers market that is proving to be a great place to buy well sourced food and goods. In 2018 Tonbridge achieved Fairtrade Town status in recognition of its commitment to Fairtrade principles.
Tonbridge
Tonbridge provides a link to the rest of the county, easily accessible by train whether you are travelling from Dover, Ashford, Ramsgate, Maidstone or London. Tonbridge Rail Station, situated very near the town centre is only a few short stops away from Staplehurst, Marden and Headcorn, where you can explore the picturesque Kentish Weald offering peaceful walks and idyllic cycle rides combining woodland, agriculture and wildlife.
Bus services connect Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells, or you can catch a bus to Maidstone. If you fancy soaking in some rural Kentish life, why not jump on a bus and visit the historic market towns of West Malling or Tenterden? Tired after your walk through Haysden Country Park to Penshurst Place? Take a well-deserved rest on the bus back to Tonbridge. After all, you have earned it.

TUDOR CYCLE TRAIL
This 6-mile route offers an almost entirely traffic-free ride from Tonbridge Castle to Penshurst Place. From the castle, follow regional cycle route 12 west through charming woodland and countryside to Penshurst Place, a fortified manor house that’s rich with medieval and Tudor charm. Explore the beautiful gardens or pay a visit to neighbouring Penshurst village for a taste of historic Kent.

This linear long distance route covers just over 28 miles along the banks of the River Medway. Walkers will enjoy the variety of landscapes from the bustling market towns of Tonbridge and Rochester, to picturesque villages and orchards tucked away in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
