Learning is learning. There are not different kinds of learning. Instead there are just many
things to learn in many areas. All learning engages the whole person. Examples: Your values, personal history, where you were born…. Any others?
Higher learning is learning that
prepares students to think creatively and critically; communicate effectively;
and excel in responding to the challenges of life, work, and citizenship-
is fundamentally developmental.
Teachers mentor students in moving from apprentice to
master.
+Something is HappeningSomething fundamental has changed during the years
between H.S and College….We are developing and constructing through the progression as humans but more
importantly through making sense of the world.
So what is REALLY happening is that we are constantly constructing and restructuring what we know through thinking about what we have experienced. Recycling
information.
*LET’S TRY IT OUT*Think about everything you know about China…
discuss it with your group and now share something you didn’t know before.
Our learning environments matter.

We need to process new information
The mind does not simply absorb or bank data that it encounters it but instead it seeks to organize the data
in some relation to what it already knows.
Learning needs to be ENGAGING
+Transformation can be scary
• Openness to the world
• Molding your identity in your community, society, world and globally
• Acknowledge disequilibrium
• The outcomes/process will be different for each student
• Time invested in learning
