Year 1 Maths – Money problems The focus this week is money. Last week we released lessons 1-3. This week we are focussing upon money problems It is very important to continue to allow the children to role play. Encouraging the children to recognise the different coins, name them, add several coins together and maybe introduce the challenge of giving change from very small amounts. Continue with shops, where you can buy simple items in your home like shoes, tins, books or toys. This will all help your children to become familiar with different coins, add coins together and give small change. Remember the most important part of learning is to let them have a go, so encourage them to role play as much as possible. If you haven’t got any coins at home to use, perhaps draw some with your children and get them to cut them out. You could look at coins on the computer or use plastic toy money you may have. The money problems vary in difficulty. Please don’t worry if your child can not do these independently. Let your child have a go initially and then talk through possible answers together. There may be several answers to one question. These are valuable learning points to discuss and share with your child. Don’t rush through the practical parts, allow them to explore and ask questions. Your child will benefit from having the coins with them to manipulate and use during the money problems. The money problems can be completed in any order so pick and use the appropriate problems for each day. Please don’t complete the money problems in one lesson as some of the problems are very challenging. Please only do these money problems if your child is motivated and ready to ‘have a go’.
