Words in sentences do different jobs. Read the paragraph from the text ‘The Naughty Bus’ below.I have underlined some words. All of the words but one do the same job. Which is the word that is the ‘odd one out’.

I’m a London bus. Where I work the buildings are tall and there’s a lot of traffic.People wait at the bus stop. But when I’m full up, I drive straight past them. Hey Mr Bus Driver! Come to the table. I have an important job to do. I must take my passengers where they want to go. And nothing must stand in my way.

Which one word do you think is the odd one out? Why? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What do think is the job of the other underlined words in these sentences? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Adjective Game

Page 5: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com€¦ · Web viewYour story opening must include a setting using the time of day and/or time of year, describe what the weather is like, describe what you

We know that Adjectives are used to describe nouns.I have made a list of some of the things (nouns) that the book mentions. For example, it refers to … a bus, passengers, buildings what other nouns can you find? Add your ideas to the table provided. Have a go at thinking of some interesting adjectives to describe the nouns you have written. When thinking about adjectives consider…...

What is the colour? What is the size? What might it feel like? What might it smell like? What might it sound like?

Nouns Adjectives

bus crowded, red, large, noisy, rickety

passengersbuildings

traffic

If you fancy a challenge…

Page 6: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com€¦ · Web viewYour story opening must include a setting using the time of day and/or time of year, describe what the weather is like, describe what you

Challenge 1: Use the adjectives you have thought of and have a look in a thesaurus or you could type into a search engine alternative words for ……. to find some similar word. These are known as synonyms.

Adjective Synonymcrowded packed, congested, cramped

Challenge 2: Have a go at putting your noun into a sentence and use 2 adjectives with a comma to describe the nouns – make sure both adjectives work, and that they do not mean the same thing.Example: I am a red, rickety London bus.

Day 3 – Writing TaskOur story ends with the words…

Did I tell you? Sometimes I’m a night bus.

This week’s writing task is to write a sequel (a story that continues on from the story that has already been written) to “Naughty Bus”.

To succeed remember to: Organise your work clearly (a clear beginning, middle

and end). Use capitals, full stops, exclamation marks and

question marks correctly. Your story opening must include a setting using the

time of day and/or time of year, describe what the weather is like, describe what you can see, hear, smell,

Use adventurous language (adjectives, verbs and adverbs).

Use varied sentence openers (fronted adverbials),

Use similes Use dialogue (speech), with correct punctuation Use powerful verbs after speech Write in the correct tense (past, present or future)

I have added some word mats which the children may like to look at below. There are some different tasks to complete at the end.
