Change to the Structure
Was a 2 – 2 – 2 format. S1/2 – S3/4 – S5/6.
With CfE a 3 – 3 format. S1/2/3 – S4/5/6.
Current S3 Curriculum
Maths/English 2.5 x 80 minutes each.
Modern Languages, Social Subjects and PE 2 x 80 minutes each.
Science 3 x 80 minutes. Art, Drama/Music, Media Studies,
RMPS, PSE and Technical 1 x 80 minutes.
S4 – S6 The Senior Phase from 2013/14. (Third year through.)
S4 – 6 subjects English and Maths plus 4 others at N3, N4, N5.
S5 – 5 subjects at N3, N4, N5, H.
S6 – Minimum 4 subjects at N3, N4, N5, H, AH.

Assessment in the New Qualifications
National 1/2/3/4 are entirely internally assessed. Mostly 3 units plus a value added task. They are pass/fail.
National 5/Higher/Advanced Higher have mostly 3 internally assessed units and an external examination. Graded A to D, with A, B and C being considered passes.

Possible Progression Routes
N5 in S4 - H in S5 - AH in S6. N4 in S4 - N5 in S5 - H in S6. N3 in S4 - N4 in S5 - N5 in S6.
However there will be subjects you can start in S5 and S6 at N5 or Higher with no previous Senior Phase study.
