Pastor’s Note… What is something I hear very often? “We, United Methodists, love to eat.” But, what if that’s not all we’re supposed to love? Pastor’s Note…What is something I hear very often? “We, United Methodists, love to eat.” But, what if that’s not all we’re supposed to love?

Through the month of October our sermon series finds its focus in Isaiah 58 and God’s Chosen Fast. This fast is more than just abstaining from select foods at select times. Instead, this sermon series focuses on what God would like to see quickly take place in each of our lives.

Beginning on October 7th, we’ll see how fast we can call on God out of a pure heart. That Sunday is also World Communion Sunday and I invite you to be here to experience the service of Holy Communion in a very special way.

October 14th is Children’s Sabbath when we rejoice how Jesus is working through our children and how Jesus delivers us and sets us free from every yoke of bondage.

October 21st will be a Total Praise Sunday. Our Celebration Choir and I will be singing almost the entire service. We also will have a special guest with us that day, Butch Taylor. Butch is best known for his work as a guest keyboardist/vocalist with Dave Matthews Band from 1997 to 2008, performing both on tour and studio albums. He also serves as a professor of jazz piano at UVA and works with me to produce My Music Snack, a monthly ministry of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

The last Sunday of October, we welcome the Rev. Ed Johnson who will be sharing the final message in our series: “You Will Be Called the Restorer of Paths to Dwell In.” Come and see how you are meant to be a part of God’s healing work!

Thank you to everyone for making our first three months at St. Paul’s such a gracious and welcoming time for Karen and I. We appreciate meeting so many of you at the Meet & Greet times. Plus, it’s been exciting to see so many new people at Wednesday night MORE, the Fun Fair Picnic, and at the many service opportunities we’ve had.

I hope you will make your plans to join our Church Retreat on Saturday, October 27th. Transportation will be provided for the day and meals are only $22.00 for the day. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to help with Trunk or Treat on October 31st at the Staunton Mall. We’ll be sharing more info with you as the day approaches!

In grace and peace…Norman Ramsey

Worship through Music

Page 5: s3.amazonaws.com · Web viewButch is best known for his work as a guest keyboardist/vocalist with Dave Matthews Band from 1997 to 2008, performing both on tour and studio albums.

Our 2018 Christmas Cantata will be “LET THE WHOLE WORLD SING” by Joel Rainey. Since the birth of Christ, the gospel message has spread across the globe and Christmas is now celebrated annually in more that 160 countries. Despite our many differences, we celebrate the season united as one kingdom of believers. This is the theme of Let The Whole World Sing, a 30-minute musical which consists of seven movements plus a closing reprise. From the Celtic lilt of “In The Bleak Midwinter” to the African rhythms of “Come, Come, Emmanuel,” through the Caribbean styled “Christ is Born,” these arrangements gently underscore the universality of the gospel message. New music is blended with familiar, traditional carols in a wide variety of styles to create an interesting and fresh retelling of the Christmas story. You are invited to come sing with us for Christmas, even if you are unable to attend Chancel Choir regularly. Along with the Cantata Book, you will

receive a CD to listen to during the week as you learn the music. Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 3, we will rehearse the Christmas Cantata for the first 30 minutes of Chancel Choir practice, 7:45-8:15 pm. As long as you learn the music, you are welcome to sing with us this Christmas, even if you can’t make every rehearsal. Come sing with us Sunday, December 16th @ 10:30 am!

Join us EVERY TUESDAY at 12:30 PM in the Sanctuary for Community Prayer Time.  This will be a time to gather and pray for one another, the community and our ministry.   If you have any questions, please contact Patsy Dillon at [email protected]

If you have kids who have completed 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade, don’t let them miss out on the fun and fellowship! Have them join us for Funtastic Friday! We will meet from 6:00pm to 7:30pm on October 19th beginning with dinner, followed by games and activities designed to help us grow in our relationship with God and grow closer to one another. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Lyle at 290-2858 or email at [email protected].

SERVE Committee…A new month is near, along with one of the favorite times of the year to SERVE… and your Serve Committee is hard at work to carry your personal (and St. Paul’s!) loving and generous spirit

Page 8: s3.amazonaws.com · Web viewButch is best known for his work as a guest keyboardist/vocalist with Dave Matthews Band from 1997 to 2008, performing both on tour and studio albums.

into Staunton, Fishersville, Augusta County and beyond. New people are coming forward all the time to join us in SERVE-ing; will you join us?

>>Breaking news<< The UMCOR Hygiene kits provided through your generosity and prepared through your hard work are on their way (literally as I type this) to the UMCOR Distribution Center, and from there, to the victims of Hurricane Florence in North Carolina!! St. Paul’s, this is your loving spirit and warm generosity put immediately to work for those who desperately need it. If you did not know this, 100% of all monetary gifts and supplies received by UMCOR are distributed; there are no “administrative” or other fees. Everything given goes to those who need it.

Your Serve Committee is poised to bring fresh sheets and other bedding to the residents of the Ritenour Rest Home, working in partnership with Christ UMC.  Offering the gift of these sheet sets to the residents will immediately improve the daily life of the people who live there. This is for THEM; everything else is secondary.   Thanks to all who made this possible, either through labor or gifts of time and treasure.

The Valley Mission Sunday Meal program and the Trinity Episcopal Lunch program continue with great results! The Mission Meal program is still looking for volunteer groups/families to cook and serve the Sunday meal for November 18th and December 16th (not Thanksgiving or Christmas). Remember that you are eligible to be reimbursed 100% for any needed supplies. Please see Jackie McGovern, Mary Flint, or Leslie and David Meyr for details.

When you see Cindy Lowe, please talk to her about the Stock the Pantry (“STP”) program. This continues to expand St. Paul’s outreach on a one-to-one connection level. Relieving food anxiety and uncertainty in the greater Staunton area, this program is mainly for persons transitioning out of homelessness. STP is working so well we’re copying it, working with the leadership at New Directions to assist clients re-establishing their lives. The New Directions Center is a non-profit community organization devoted to reducing the occurrence and impact of emotional, physical, and sexual violence in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County. This program is designed to protect the identity of the clients; please see a member of the Serve team if you wish a more detailed explanation. In addition, New Directions will make a presentation to the United Methodist Men at their breakfast on November 17th.

Your Serve Team will meet again Tuesday, October 9th at 5:30 in St. Paul’s library (this is a change for the Committee!); please attend if you have any suggestions or questions, or if you want to join this active, fun and vital group.

This along with Celebration’s Dinner Theater is a big fundraiser for the church. The money raised will be split among capital improvements and local outreach missions here in the valley.

The event will be on Saturday, November 10th from 3:00pm to 6:30pm. Tickets for the dinner are $12 adult and $6 for children. We almost ran out of tickets and more importantly food last year so I highly recommend that you get them early!

This has always been successful because of your help. So, please stop by our table in the Narthex for more information on how you can volunteer your talents to make this event the best ever!

APPLESAUCE: If you pre-ordered applesauce, it has been made and available for you. Please see me or any cheerful TICKET TABLE volunteer during the month of October to pay for and pick up your applesauce. If you have any questions, see Leslie Meyr (757-319-9420).

The Voice of the Prophets!   Prophets are the spokesmen for God. They bring a message that calls people away from earthly kingdoms to the Kingdom of God. During our time together we will worship, share in fellowship and food, and spend time studying the prophet's role in God's kingdom and their message of hope amidst chaos. We will also consider the need and presence of modern prophets calling us today. Come and listen to the voice of the prophets.Rev. Tom Crosby
