Friends and Family of Mount Olivet UMC,Advent is upon us!  Advent marks the beginning of the church year. During Advent, we prepare for, and anticipate, the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of Jews for a Messiah and our own longing for and need for the Messiah. In essence we are humbled as we are reminded of our need for forgiveness, salvation and a new beginning.Even as we look back and celebrate the birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem, we also look forward anticipating the second coming of Christ as the fulfillment of all that was promised by his first coming. It is a time where the church is actively called to prepare for the working of Christ in the coming year! The liturgy and advent wreath is an example of this. The Advent wreath, four candles on a wreath of evergreen, is shaped in a perfect circle to symbolize the eternity of God. During each Sunday of the Advent season, we focus on one of the four virtues Jesus brings us: Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. Others consider the lighting of the first candle to symbolize expectation, while the second symbolizes hope, the third joy and the fourth purity. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day reminding Christians that Jesus is the light of the world. The wreath continually reminds us of whom we are called to be as followers of Jesus.Bishop/ Saint Augustine once said: "What praises for God's love should we be voicing, what thanks should we be giving? After all, he loved us so much that He, through whom all times were made, became human within time for our sake; that He, more ancient in eternity than the world itself, became younger in age than many of His servants in the world ... He loved us so much that He was created from a mother whom He had created, was carried in hands He had made, was nourished at breasts He had filled; that He, the Word without whom all human eloquence is mute, wailed in a manger in mute infancy ... Once, back in paradise, you were so fluent [in speaking] that you named every living thing. For your sake, however, your Creator lay speechless and could not even call His mother by her name"

As we reflect of Christ let us remember the humility which Christ took on. Let us remember the calling of Christ to be as humble as he who bore our sins. Let us boast loudly in our weakness so that God’s strength can be seen! Let us prayerful seek God as we draw near to the New Year. Let us anticipate with joy the work God has called us to.Remember that once advent is over Christmas is just beginning…We get two whole weeks to experience the joy of Christmas. The director of the General Board of Discipleship for the United Methodist Church: The Reverend Taylor Burton-Edwards notes: “The Christmas Season begins with the birth of Jesus and gives us two full weeks to encounter the extraordinary love, threats, dangers and opportunities God's Incarnation [in the birth of Jesus] set off then and still sets off today."

I pray you will find nourishment, grace, and hope as we prepare for another year in the Christian journey. Where we will meet threats, and dangers but more than that we will find extraordinary love, hope, grace, and peace.Your Brother and Servant in Christ.Pastor Tim
