The Holy Eucharist The Word of God

Processional All glory, laud, and honor Hymnal 154The Collect of the DayCelebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Celebrant Let us pray.Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (The people may be seated.)A Reading from Isaiah (50:4-9a) The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens -- wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced;

therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

Psalm 31: 9-16 BCP 623

ANTIPHON9 Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble;

my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly.

10 For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing;my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed.

11 I have become a reproach to all my enemies and even to my neighbors,a dismay to those of my acquaintance;when they see me in the street they avoid me.

12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind;I am as useless as a broken pot.ANTIPHON

13 For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around;they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life.

(Antiphon: choir and congregation, verses of the Psalm

14 But as for me, I have trusted in you, O LORD.I have said, "You are my God.

15 My times are in your hand;rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.

16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, and in your loving-kindness save me."ANTIPHON

A Reading from Philippians (2: 5-11)Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God,did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form,he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death--even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend,in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks Be to God. (Silence for reflection upon the reading.)

consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him,

Pilate: Are you the King of the Jews?Mark: Jesus answered him,Jesus: You say so.Mark: Then the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate

asked him again,Pilate: Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring

against you.Mark: But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.

Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them,

Pilate: Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?Mark: For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief

priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again,

Pilate: Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?

Mark: They shouted back,Crowd: Crucify him!Mark: Pilate asked them,Pilate: Why, what evil has he done?Mark: But they shouted all the more,Crowd: Crucify him!Mark: So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for

them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters); and they called

together the whole cohort. And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on him. And they began saluting him,

Soldiers: Hail, King of the Jews!Mark: They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt

down in homage to him. After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). All stand who are ableAnd they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. And they crucified him, and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should take.It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ And with him they crucified two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying,

Crowd: Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!

Mark: In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among themselves and saying,

ChiefPriests:

He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe.

Mark: Those who were crucified with him also taunted him. When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice,

Jesus: Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?Mark: which means,Jesus: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?Mark: When some of the bystanders heard it, they said,

Crowd: Listen, he is calling for Elijah.Mark: And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a

stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying,Bystander

:Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.

Mark: Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said,

Centurion:

Truly this man was God’s Son!

Holy Jesu, by the passion, by the woes which none can share, borne in more than kingly fashion, by thy love beyond compare:  Crucified, I turn to Thee, Son of Mary, plead for me.By thy look so sweet and lowly, while they smote thee on thy face, by thy patience, calm and holy, in the midst of keen disgrace.  By the path of sorrows dreary, by the cross, thy dreadful load, by the pain, when, faint and weary thou didst sink upon the road.By the spirit which could render love for hate and good for ill, by the mercy, sweet and tender, poured upon thy murderers still.

The Prayers of the People (Form I) BCP 383With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord, saying "Lord, have mercy."For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the Holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy. For Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Rob, our bishop; Dena, our rector; Kay, our deacon; Richard, our priest associate; St. Philip’s, Southport, the Rev. Canon James Hanisian, priest-in-charge; and for all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy. For Donald, our President; for Roy, our Governor; for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.

The Holy CommunionOffertory Anthem The Appeal of the Crucified (from The Crucifixion)

John StainerFrom the throne of his cross, the King of grief cries out to a world of unbelief: Oh! Men and women a far and nigh, is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?  I laid my eternal power aside, I came from the home of the glorified, a babe in the lowly cave to lie.  I wept for the sorrows and pains of men, I healed them, and helped them and loved them, but then, they shouted against me, “Crucify!”  Behold me and see: pierced thro’ and

thro’ with countless sorrows, and all is for you; for you I suffer, for you I die.  Oh! Men and women your deeds of shame, your sins without reason, and number, and name, I bear them all on this cross on high.  Is it nothing to you that I bow my head?  And nothing to you that my blood is shed?  Oh!  Perishing souls, to you I cry, is it nothing to you?  O come unto me, by the woes I have borne, by the dreadful scourge, and the crown of thorns, by these I implore you to hear my cries.  O come unto me, this awful price, redemption’s tremendous sacrifice, is paid for you.  O come unto me.

Rector’s notes on liturgyTruth nailed upon the cross compels nobody, oppresses no one; it must be accepted and confessed freely; its appeal is addressed to free spirits – Nicholas BerdyaevToday is two Sundays kind of rolled into one. Palm Sunday calls us to relive Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, with palms and branches carpeting his path and loud hosannas announcing his arrival. Matthew quotes the prophet Zechariah, “Tell the daughter of Zion, look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey…and he shall command peace to the nations.” (Zechariah 9:9-10) Whatever kind of king the crowds hoped Jesus would be, his every word and every action was evidence of the kingdom of God. Our Sunday then turns to the Passion and we witness the injustice and violence done to the king of peace, the God of love – truth nailed upon the cross.

Music at St. Paul’s Choral Evensong this Sunday, March 25th.  Organ recital by Sara Bryant at 5:30 p.m.  Evensong is sung at 6:00 p.m.  Music by Noble, Handel and others.  Evensong is a sung service of Evening Prayer and lasts about 35-minutes.The Crucifixion by John Stainer, Good Friday, March 30th at 7:30 PM.  Sung by the Choir of St. Paul's with Melvin Ezzell, tenor, Ronald Holmes, bass, and Richard Rhoads, organ.  This 45-minute concert recalls the Passion and Crucifixion of Jesus as narrated by tenor and bass soloists.  The concert is free.Join the Choir of St. Paul's in NYC this summer.  The choir has been invited to sing Sunday services at St. Thomas, Fifth Avenue on Sunday, August 26th.  St. Thomas is one of the most well know Episcopal churches in the country and is especially famous for its choir of men and boys.  We are inviting non-singers to travel with us.

COASTAL CAROLINA CABARET: The old song reminds us that “be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.” But in the Wilmington area, some homes owned by poor people are not just humble: they are unsafe for their residents. That’s a problem that Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry (WARM) addresses.Since 1996, WARM has mustered volunteers and raised money to complete safety-related urgent repairs and accessibility upgrades that allow low-income homeowners in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties to remain in their homes. By preventing home-related accidents and illness, WARM enables elderly homeowners to age in place in safety, and families to raise their children in a healthful environment.

14

Page 15: s3.amazonaws.com€¦  · Web viewthat I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. ... bass, and Richard Rhoads, organ. ... 4/05 Randy Beardsworth, ...

Every May, WARM volunteers target one homeowner for a special effort.Proceeds from the Coastal Carolina Cabaret will enable WARM to select two Mother’s Day of Hope honorees this year. And the door is open to any St. Paul’s parishioners who would like to volunteer as well. Learn more about WARM at www.warmnc.org.SILENT AUCTION: We are looking for donations of auction items valued at $250 or more. Please contact Dot or Tom Erway with questions or donations.
