Balancing Act
While important for communing, celebration, meeting and solidifying our relationships, ‘gathering’ also carries a central importance for our working behaviours, being a key pillar to collaborations and creative approaches to innovation in the commercial sector.
We all know the role of the physical workplace is changing. Indeed, Herman Miller’s research demonstrates that workstations remain unoccupied 60 percent of the time, while private offices remain unused 77 percent of the time*1.
What, then, should the modern workspace look like? Gensler suggests a balanced approach to the workplace*2. The architecture firm’s Asia Workplace Survey found that respondents in balanced workplaces have more job satisfaction than their peers, they have better working relationships and the companies they work for are more creative
and innovative. In the 21st century, the best workplaces – those that support and boost the performance of the people working there – offer space for both concentrated, individual work at shared workstations and open-plan areas for informal, collaborative work.

Better Together Why do we need these collaborative areas, you ask? Because studies show that sharing information facilitates the decision-making process: two heads (or more) are better than one, leading to more successful choices – for the individual, and for the company.
Choice is a key word here. Studies show that people benefit from having options when it comes to how and where they work and
interact. Gensler’s Asia Workplace Survey*3 recently found that employees who choose their own work settings report higher scores across performance indicators. With choice comes a sense of empowerment, as well as the ability to experiment with new and better ways of working.

Getting Collaboration Right
“When people want to collaborate, they’ll seek out the simplest, most convenient solution.” This was one of the key findings in Herman Miller’s whitepaper, What it Takes to Collaborate. For a collaborative space to work, it therefore needs to be located within easy reach of desks, encouraging speedy and spontaneous interaction. This paves the way for great ideas to spill forth, promoting personal growth and improved business performance.
Collaborative space also needs to be flexible to accommodate all kinds of interaction, as well as supporting quiet, ‘think’ time. Plus it should be equipped with the right tools, which means power, connectivity and light sources.
This is where Sabha comes in. This new soft seating system from Herman Miller Asia was designed for Asia, and made in Asia. It’s also a market first: conceived specifically to facilitate collaboration, it adapts with ease to different people using it in different ways, and to different environments and situations.

Sabha Collaborative Seating™ was born out of the realisation that teamwork and collaborative events are intrinsic to the success of the world’s top companies.
“By understanding the applications and configurations in today’s agile working environment, we realised that our end customer was after inclusiveness and flexibility,” explains Jack Wang, Head of Design and Development at Herman Miller Asia, who spearheaded the project.
“We realised it wasn’t economical to provide an individual solution in addressing each application, but more sensible to create a system platform, based on the learning of all the desking and panel systems we have launched in the past.”

Product Story
Sabha is the ultimate soft-seating system. Designed to be lightweight, low and open-platform, it can be configured in myriad ways. Benches, one-, two- and three-seater options, built-in surfaces and functional occasional items can come together to create the ideal counterbalance to personal workstations, thus supporting collaboration, naturally.
According to Wang, modularity was a key consideration in the design for Sabha. The understructure frame is consistent across all products within the collection, enabling the same platform “to connect with all the soft and wood elements on top, via clamps, which can be easily tightened and untightened” for easy installation and dismantling.
Instant access to power, the ability to create your own look through fabric and finishing choices, and lighting designed specially for the Sabha system are also vital elements across the whole collection.

The Choice is Yours
When it comes to putting all the elements together, the choice is yours. Using a central undercarriage as the foundation for seating and surfaces, Sabha addresses a multitude of different interactive settings with the same vocabulary.
