SERIES: JONAH - RUNNING FROM GOD SERMON - “Jonah - Fueled by Anger”
A. So in Jonah chapter 1 - we see that Jonah runs from God. In chapter 2 - we see Jonah runs
to God. In chapter 3 - we see that Jonah preaches to the people of Nineveh and they run to God. But in chapter 4 - we see that Jonah, once again, will run from God, and this time he will do so in anger.
B. Today, what I want to do is to focus on three different truths that are found in Jonah chapter 4. 1. God’s way is the only way. a. Jonah 4:1 - 3 - The people repent of their evil ways. God forgives them, but Jonah gets angry. In vs 4, God says, “Is it right for you to be angry? b. Psalm 103:8 says, “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” We love that verse when it applies to us. But we have a really hard time with it when it applies to our enemies, and that’s where Jonah finds himself. c. Jonah doesn’t like that God chose to forgive the people of Nineveh so quickly. But Jonah is not in charge. God is in charge. And God’s way is the only way. 2. God’s timing is the best timing. a. Vs 5 - 6 - God provides a plant and Jonah is happy. b. Vs 7 - 8a - God provides a worm to eat the plant and Jonah is weary. c. Vs 8b - 9 - Jonah becomes angry again, but remember God’s way is the only way. God’s timing is the best timing. And finally, 3. God’s love should be our love. a. Look at vs 10—11. When God says go we go. God so loved the whole world. God sent his son to die for the whole world. God desires for the whole world to accept His son as Savior and Lord. And we must not be angry with Him. We must follow His leading. b. So the question is. Why would God choose to included their story? And why would God end the story at this particular point? Maybe it’s to let us know that if God can use a man like Jonah who is this hot and cold servant. Who is angry one day and wants things his way, and then the next day he’s praising God and he’s worshipping God. If God can use Jonah, He can use us as well. CONCLUSION: The message of Jonah is to love even those that you don’t feel like loving. Love those who you don’t think deserve love. Love those who are different than you. Why? Because God does. And that’s the message of Jonah.
