Chapter 2: The French ConnectionAn Interview with Jesús

Jesús García Polo, our French

teacher, was in eight different

Secondary schools in Almería

before coming to IES Sabinar.

He has been 23 years in our

school and it is his favourite.

His relationship with students isl ike love and hate at the sametime. He gets along well with thestudents who understand him, but he gets very angry whenthey don’t understand and behave like l ittle children. He also gets alongwell with his companions but over al l with Angélica, Encarna and MarAranda.

Jesús has been the secretary for 1 3 years, but he prefers giving lessonsin the classrooms. After his 34 years of teaching, he says that years agopeople studied more and they did it because they wanted; nowadaysthere are children of a lot of kinds and the majory study obligatori ly.

Anecdotal ly, he tel ls us that on his ifirst day of teaching in a graduateclass, the students thought that he was another student, too.

He thinks that the new reform has worsened the school. The purpose ofteaching is to take rebell ion, and to take the best everyone has. He saysthat we have to create the world, l ive in it and discover it on our ownwithout the need of a teacher’s advice.

I.E.S. Sabinar: Past, Present and FutureAn Interview with Rodolphe

We also interviewed our assistant to the Head of Studies,

Rodolphe. He tells us that the best and the only one school is I.E.S.

Sabinar.

Besides being a French teacher, Rodolphe has also become assistant tothe Head of Studies. He says that he l ikes the new appointment; in thisappointment he sees more aspects of a Secondary school. Rodolpheoverlooks the corridors, sorts out the problems between students, takesover the school paperwork, and also teaches his subject.

He states that this year he isworking more than in previousyears, and he is spending a lot oftime in the head-quarters with co-direction. He says that he getsalong well with his teammates, buthe has less relationship with the restof the teachers since he doesn't goto the staff room.

He likes this year more than otherprevious years, and expects greatresults from the new reforms.

Final ly, he sees aspects that he hadn't seen before, and he is very happywith his work.

AA DDaayy iinn tthhee LLiiffee ooff......Juan Iniesta, our director

Let's talk a little about the day-by-day routine ofour director, starting with a normal day.

Being the school principal has a tight scheduleand little free time, but he always finds anopening for his hobbies. His main hobby issports, all sports. He commented that herdaughter goes to tennis lessons some eveningsand sees her play tennis, but he sometimesescapes to go to the gym.

His favorite football team is Real Madrid, but hehas a weakness for Spain and suffers much more, since for him RealMadrid is not as important as the Spanish National Team. He gets nervous and gets angrywhen they lose, and things like that do not happen with Real Madrid.

As everyone knows, last Christmas works began on the new building of our school, whichhas surprised us all. As a result of these works, Mr Iniesta and some members of theeducational community will have to spend the summer watching the works at the school, helping as needed. Some will have no summer holidays.

Speaking of the school, what Don Juan likes most about his job is to organise new things,to try not to have a routine, to do different things that students like and see the school sodifferent from other previous years, more favourably. Instead, there are things he does notlike about his job as we all do. He hates paperwork, all kinds of paperwork, from

forms to notices; he does not like answering email or filling outsurveys... well, paperwork in general.

Now, let's talk a little about his music and food tastes. He likesall kinds of music, he plays the radio and listens to pop, rock,rap... occasionally a song he does not like and changes the sta-tion, then he keeps listening whatever is on the radio. He likesmusic in general. As for food, exactly the same. He likes all ty-pes of food, especially salad and pasta, which is normal in anathlete like our principal.

This is all about Don Juan Iniesta, a great director who isdoing very well; we are all happy with their work, and we en-joyed the interview because we learned things that did notknow before.

PPAAIINNTTBBAALLLLPaintball (in Spanish 'bola de pintura') is a sportin which participants use markers, so called forbeing used in farms to mark the animals. Thesemarkers are powered by compressed air, CO2or other gases; they shoot small balls filled withpainting to the other players. In contrast topopular belief, it is one of the safest outdoorsports.

In a game of paintbal l , teams face in order to clearal l the players from the other team or complete anobjective, such as capturing a flag or el iminating aspecific player. A set of typical non-professionalpaintbal l usually lasts about five minutes to half anhour.

Paintbal l began as a hunting game between twofriends in the woods of Henniker, New Hampshire.I t was original ly cal led National Survival Game, because it was not considered a sport at that time. After returning from a hunting trip, Charles Gainesand Haynes Noel were eager to hunt again andinvented the game inspired by the story "The MostDangerous Game". A year and a half later, GeorgeButler, a friend, showed them a paintbal l gun in anagricultural catalog. The weapon was a markerNelspot 007 manufactured by the Nelson PaintCompany and was used by farmers to mark cattle.Noel and Gaines each bought a marker and held amatch that would become the first paintbal l game.Gaines won. By then, friends had devised the basicrules of the game based on Capture the Flag

Like many other sports, safe participation in a gameof paintbal l requires compliance with safety rules. The probabil ity of injury in other popular sportsteam is much higher:

1 ) Set the mask right not to suffer face injuries.2) Have the safety guards on before starting.3) Always keep the gun pointed down.4) Respect the distance.5) Be more than 1 2 years old to play.6) When you get once, l ift the marker.

Paintball variations

Capture the Flag: A team must capture the flag atthe base of the opponent on the opposite side ofthe field and carry it to their base to win the game.

Centerflag: Similar to Capture the Flag, except thatthere is only one flag in a neutral place in midfield.Victory is achieved by capturing the flag andcarrying to a certain area, usually the place ofdeparture of the opposing team.

XBall: A newer version of CenterFlag, similar toHockey in which teams of 5 members per side, 2rounds, facing for a period of time, winning thegame the team that achieves more points.

Elimination: The goal is to el iminate al l membersof the opposing team.

Woodsball: This paintbal l variation takes place inwooded areas (in some countries it is cal led Recball). Woodsball allows the participation of anynumber of players with a variety of types of bun-kers.

Scenarioball: The games of this variation (in Spa-nish 'paintball de guión') are based on a story ortopic l ine, thus allowing the participation of a widerange of skil l levels of the players and an evengreater number of participants. These games canlast from a few hours to several days. Objectiveschange according to the agreed script butcooperation is a major theme in the games.

Speedball ('bola rápida') is a type of paintbal lbased more on speed and further movement thanthe other variants, so that games are often faster.

Mode 10 is a type of paintbal l that is based moreon attack and with no defensive tactic, so it is morefront. These games are usually faster and only lasta couple of minutes, because the goal is toel iminate opponents as quickly as possible andtake the objective, ideal ly played in 2 groups of fiveplayers; hence its name.

U2 is an Irish Pop-Rock band formed in Dublin, 1976, byBono (voice), The Edge (guitar, keyboard and voice), AdamClayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums).

The first sound of U2 had his roots in post-punk, but laterthey started incorporating more popular sounds in theirmusic. As for their lyrics, they focus on personal topics andthe subject matter of social justice and peace.

U2 was formed in the Mount Temple Comprehensive School, when its initial members were teenagers. After four years, they signed their first contract with Island Records andlaunched their début album, (1980). In the mid-eighties,the band happened to be known throughout the world.

U2 are some of the music bands with major sales, sellingapproximately 150 millions of copies throughout the world. Theyhave won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band, and in2005, they were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

magazine positioned them number 22 in their list ofthe 100 Major Artists of All Time.

To me, their songs seem to be very special and nice. The lyricsare expressive and have messages of love, which is what I likethe most. My favorite U2 song is (1987),though I also like (1992) and (2004), I am alwayslistening to them. In my opinion, they are not like other rockbands. Their sound is original, it makes you feel happy. I thinkeveryone knows at least one of their songs. They have madehistory in the world of music.

AA NNEEWW CCOOUUNNTTRRYYWell, maybe I'm not the best option to compare twocountries, two cities, two towns or whatever. But anyway, Ihave this mission and I'm going to do my best to do itmoderately well.

To begin with, I'll tell you a short story:

Once upon a time, there was a littlebaby girl born in the north of a blue, yellow and red country. When she wasthree years old, she was taken, for onereason or other, 3500 km away from herhome.

The new place was quite different. Onthe one hand, it's interesting andexiciting to travel and see the newcountry. But, on the other hand, if youstay enough to call it home, you breakyour heart in pieces and distribute it.Once you do that, you can't go back. But it isn't as sad as it sounds. You feelrich when you have more homes than e-mail accounts.

A full moon was shown in the sky as a twelve-year-old kid named Ethan was looking at the streetthrough a window. He had invited his best friendLiza to spend the night with him. Since his parentswere out for a meeting, he was all alone.

Suddenly, someone knocked at the door. 'Itmust be Liza', thought the boy, and ran downstairsto open. It was Liza. For some reason, she was allwet.

'You’re a bit late', commented Ethan. 'Whathappened to you, anyway?'

'I was caught by the rain', said Liza. 'That’swhy I couldn’t come in time.'

'No problem. Come in, let me give yousomething to dry yourself.'

'Thanks, Ethan.'The boy went to the bathroom to take a towel,

and handed it to his friend.'By the way', asked Liza, while drying herself.

'Where are your parents?''In a meeting', answered the boy. 'Something

about their job, you know.''Oh, I see...''I forgot to ask you', said Ethan politely. 'You

want something to eat?'

'Actually, Ethan', answered Liza, 'I’m a bithungry.'

'Okay then, let me prepare you something.'Ethan went into the kitchen while Liza

stayed in the living room watching T.V. The boycame out a bit later with two sandwitches. Heoffered one to Liza.

'Thank you, Ethan.''I hope you like it.'Liza tried the sandwich and smiled to Ethan.'It tastes great!''I’m so glad you like it', commented the boy.

'Hey, what’s on T.V?''Nothing too great', answered the girl. 'There

is just a comedy film.''Sounds interesting. Let’s watch it, shall we?''If you like, why not?'Once the film had finished, Ethan looked at

the street. It was very dark outside. He noticed aswell that Liza had just fallen asleep.

'Hey, Liza', called Ethan softly. 'Wake up.'Liza woke up slowly.'The film has finished, and looks like you

weren’t very interested in it.''Yeah, it seems so.'

'What was that?''I have no idea. Stay here, Liza, I’ll find out.''Be...be careful, okay?'Ethan went to the ground floor while Liza

stayed in the bedroom. A bit later, the girl decided tocall her friend, since he wasn’t coming back.Frightened, she called.

'Ethan? Are you there?'All of a sudden, a loud scream of pain echoed

through the entire house as fast steps were goingupstairs... right towards the place where Liza was!The girl was paralysed.

'Who’s there? Answer me!'Nobody answered. In a matter of seconds, a

man appeared in front of her, holding a knife. He gotcloser and closer to the girl. Liza screamed. At thatmoment, she woke up. She saw Ethan’s face next tohers.

'Wh... what happened?', asked the girl.'You were having a nightmare. I was so

worried. You were calling me and screaming...''It was terrifying...''Don’t worry now, I’m here...'Liza hugged him, and Ethan did the same.'Stay with me, please. I’m still scared.''I will Liza, I promise.'

'It’s getting late. Shall we go to sleep now?''Why? Does the night scare you?,' asked the

girl, smiling sarcastically.'No, it’s not that! It’s just that I’m... a bit

sleepy.''You know what? Me too.''Let’s go then.'

The two kids went upstairs and went into Ethan’sbedroom.

'So how are we sleeping?', asked Liza.

'My bed is too small for both of us', answeredEthan, 'so you can sleep there.'

'And what about you?''Don’t worry.'Ethan took something out of his wardrobe.'It’s a sleeping bag', said Ethan happily. 'I’ll

sleep here.''Won’t you be uncomfortable there?''No, don’t worry.'Suddenly, Ethan yawned. A few seconds later,

Liza did the same. Both children laughed at it. Later, both kids were at their beds.

'Okay, I’m a bit tired, so I’m sleeping now.Good night, Liza.'

'Good night, Ethan.'They went to sleep. Everything was going

normal... Until a loud noise broke the silence. Thetwo kids awoke instantaneously.
