From the Principal continued.

The recent social media attention around an incident at Year 11 brought our Mercy values into sharp focus in the last fortnight. The potential for the rapid spread of false information is concerning and causes distress to the people involved as well as the whole community. Our reputation for respect and inclusion has been built over 136 years and I thank all the staff, students and parents who were so quick to question the veracity of media reports and remind people of our core values. Most importantly, we hope that no student, parent or staff member is experiencing ongoing discomfort as a result of this incident. The Leadership Team welcomes any member of the community who has unresolved questions around this matter.

Many of our Year 4 students have had a very special fortnight as they celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation (45 students) and First Eucharist (43 students) at the Cathedral. Surrounded by their families, friends and teachers, the students were keenly aware of God’s loving presence in their lives. In the sacrament of Confirmation, they took another important step in their journey of faith; and in the Eucharist we thanked God for life, family and friendship. I would like to acknowledge the work of Ms Sandra Sofia and the Year 4 teachers in preparing these girls for the sacraments.

Two weeks ago we were welcoming the Spring sunshine, but it seems the winter rains have returned for a few more weeks. It was disappointing to cancel our Athletics Carnival, an event that is always such a wonderful celebration and is the result of an enormous amount of preparation. I thank the staff involved for their understanding and cooperation on the day. It was crucial that we prioritise the safety and wellbeing of the students and the weather deteriorated much more quickly than expected. Thanks also to parents and carers for accommodating this change in plans.

Spring was in the air, however, at the Royalty Theatre on Tuesday night for our annual Spring Concert. The musical talent on display showcased students of all ages in a range of performance opportunities. It is always a pleasure to witness the collaboration of students, staff and instrumental teachers on these occasions. As well as giving families a chance to enjoy their children’s musical gifts, these concerts also build confidence and creativity in our students. Special thanks to Ms Linda Clemente and the Music Department for nurturing this creativity at the College.

SECONDARY SPORTGOLD DUKES RESIDENTIAL TIWI ISLANDS 2016At the beginning of Term 3, The Tiwi Squad (Hannah Palmer 10MB, Gabrielle Alderdice 10KI, Sara Hillock 11AB, Brianna Roy 11SE and Emily Craft 11AB with their temporary ‘Mum and Dad’, Ms Butterworth and Mr Brown), were privileged to travel and stay at Bathurst Island, in the Tiwi Islands. We were welcomed by OLSH nun, Sr Anne Gardiner and her gorgeous dog Anne-Zac. The Tiwi Squad were fortunate to attend Murrupurtiyanuwu Preschool and Primary School where we met and developed learning relationships with local Indigenous children. Whilst assisting in the learning of basic literacy and numeracy skills, the Tiwi Squad began to understand their complex culture and their way of life, through their dance, music and engaging in their language. It was rewarding to present two large boxes of toys kindly donated by the SAC community to the Preschool children at the end of the week. The entire community was welcoming and friendly. Everywhere we went, the people were interested to learn more about who we were and where we were from. It was an eye-opening experience when the Tiwi Squad accompanied the preschool children home on the bus ride every day. We were able to see for ourselves just how fortunate we are. Sr Anne informed us that the Tiwi people learn from the past but live in the present, having no word in their language for the future. The days ran on ‘Tiwi Time’ and no one was in a rush to get to places, with no strict timetable to adhere to. At the end of our trip, we were asked by Sr Anne what we would take away from our experiences in Tiwi. Our answers varied from person to person, but we all agreed in taking with us the Tiwi spirit which filled the air wherever we went, with constant happiness and laughter. We hope that we have helped to make a small but significant difference in the lives of each of the Tiwi Island people by reminding them that they are all special and unique.

Christina Moutos with some inspired JAM Students, holding Steph’s outstretched ‘bravery beads’. It was a moving presentation for all who attended

The refugee crisis is a social justice issue that has been posing many threats to humanity. But after all this time why haven’t we advanced in solving this problem? A clear answer to this question is lack of knowledge, empathy and information about what truly this problem entails. There is so much more that lies behind the endless newspaper articles and statistics. This is a human issue and what better way to educate students than by having an intimate and personal conversation about what this issue really is. In Term 3, the Year 11 students were lucky enough to listen to three young, well-spoken, empowering women from Adelaide University Asylum Seekers Association. Their names are Rey Haneh, Gaida Merei and Karolinka Dwidziak-Pacek (Class of 2011). It was clearly evident how much effort was put into creating an interactive, engaging and educational session that provided a great deal of insight into this global issue. Part of the session included participating in an interactive problem-solving activity which involved the Year 11 students stepping into the shoes of asylum seekers. We were forced to make decisions as hard as getting on a boat and fleeing from war or staying where we were in the war torn country. Decisions like these felt so far away, until we were put into the situation where we had to make them. Unimaginable situations that people all over the world have to face were put right in front of us. It was eye-opening to see the horrors that asylum seekers and refugees are faced with every day. Discussions about the persecution of many ethnic minorities were introduced to us. Some of the girls presenting to us were also able to tell us about personal experiences that their families faced. This was not only informative, but it evoked a great deal of emotion, interest and passion among the Year 11 cohort. Words cannot properly describe the impact this session had on many of the girls. Conversation and discussion were evoked for many days after, really highlighting the impact education and information can have on young girls such as us. One key aspect, or question arisen from this session was “what can we do to help?” The passion that came about from an hour speech was remarkable because if we achieved one thing from the session it was that “you must be the change you want to see in the world”. Tara Murali 11TC

In Week 7 during JAM, Christina Moutos, a parent at the school, came in to share with us her family’s story about her brave daughter, Stephania in 2LI, who has battled Leukaemia. Her story was very confronting, as it revealed just how fast your whole world can change as a result of illness when you least expect it. Her story showed tremendous courage and strength which was truly inspiring. A treatment that Steph underwent was vital blood transfusion, and as a blood donor it was wonderful to hear what a difference one donation can make. The simple action of donating blood can make such a huge impact on the lives of people in these situations. Her story really encouraged the group and myself to get involved with blood donations. Chloe Cornelius-Inge 11SE

I liked how Christina’s presentation wasn’t one of pity but one that showed resilience and strength. You always hear stories and facts about people who are affected by cancer and other illnesses but rarely do you meet someone who is facing the reality of it. The presentation humanised the issue and made it something that is happening to people we know. It was an eye-opening presentation that really motivated us to look for ways that we can help children and their families through these difficult times, like by volunteering with charities like Starlight. Jasmine Dallimore & Bonnie Sandison 10MB

I was really moved when Christina showed us Steph’s ‘bravery beads’, which is a program where children get a bead representing each time they undergo a medical treatment. Christina held up a few of Steph’s beads, before releasing a long chain of them which was extended more than a metre from the floor. The beads really inspired me as I could see the strength and resilience that Steph had showed as she remained positive and never complained throughout the process. I was very touched when Christina shared with us how you’re never expecting yourself or someone you know to get cancer, how you don’t carry the checklist with you. Maya Murali 9LF

PRIMARY SPORT

There is only one more week of primary sport to go for Term 3 and what an incredibly busy but exciting couple of terms of primary sport it has been. I wish our netball and indoor soccer teams the best of luck in the final round of matches.During Week 9, the very last of the Come ‘n’ Try programs will also conclude for 2016. Throughout the year approximately 150 students from Reception through to Year 3 have participated in the Come ‘n’ Try program each term! I would like to acknowledge and thank the primary teachers for their support with Reception to Year 3. Without their help the sessions would not be able to go ahead.

CONFIRMATION & FIRST EUCHARISTTerm 3 has been a very busy term for Sacraments. Students have prepared in their Religious Education lessons and attended workshops and meetings as they continue in their faith journey. In the presence of sponsors, family, friends and classmates, 45 students celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation in the St Francis Xavier Cathedral on Thursday 1 September, 2016. Candidates were presented to Archbishop Philip Wilson, renewing their Baptismal Promises, calling forth the Holy Spirit and being annointed with the Oil of Chrism. Certificates were presented by Archbishop Philip Wilson and our principal Ms Paddy McEvoy. Thank you to Archbishop Philip Wilson, our readers, staff, and school choir for their involvement in this special occasion. On Saturday 3 September, 42 students celebrated the Sacrament of First Eucharist with friends and family. Seven of our students brought the gifts of bread and wine to the altar. It was the first time that these students received the body and blood of Christ. This means that they can receive Communion from now on and are fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. Many are looking forward to receiving Communion with other members of our school community at the Mercy Mass this term. Students received certificates and a small pin as a memento of their Sacraments from Fr Paul Cashen and Ms Marian Elliot. Thank you to Fr Paul and the Adelaide Cathedral Parish for their assistance with the celebrations.

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

Making my Communion and Confirmation was very exciting. The most exciting part was taking the bread and the wine at Mass. Daniela Bagnato 4GBI felt happy when I made my Communion because when I go to church, now I can have the bread. I also felt special because all of my family were there to support me. Olivia Mennillo 4GBI liked it because we were accepted into the church and also because I got one of my medals blessed. I also liked it because I got to spend time with my family and with Jesus and God. Sara Roesler 4GBI was excited to be able to go up to the priest to receive the bread and wine during my First Eucharist. Stacey Frisina 4SLI liked that I could make the choice to participate in the sacraments. Ella Towers 4SLI loved preparing and celebrating Confirmation and the First Eucharist because I got to be a part of a once in a life time experience. I feel like a new person now that I have been confirmed into the Holy Church and I have experienced Jesus in Communion for the first time. I’m happy that I was able to share these special moments with my brother who also celebrated his Sacrament. Casey Waterhouse7SS

YEAR 7 ARTExhibition Coming Soon!

Year 7 have been studying self- portraits in Art this term. Students in 7SS had a visit by old scholar and South Australian Living Artist (SALA) artist Ms Alison Holmes. Alison held her own exhibition of self-portraits in the Adelaide Hills. Her visit provided inspiration for student work by giving a better understanding of how an artist formulates ideas, selects a medium, edits their work and considers effective presentation. We thank Alison for giving us this learning opportunity.

All Year 7 students are now finalising their selected artworks for the Year 7 Art Exhibition in the school foyer in Weeks 9 and 10. We invite you to visit the exhibition during office hours.

Ms Sandra SofiaYEAR 7 HOME CLASS TEACHER

Alison told us that everyone has a specific fascination with photography and that photos may have something in common. Alison’s photos were of markings like scratches and paint splats. Claudia Grech 7SSIt was fascinating to learn about the different textures of the photos. I also thought it was interesting that Alison’s self- portraits were part of an art exhibition. Talia Mennillo 7SSAlison’s self- portraits were different. She used photography of dirty paint tables at university for her idea. Alison also told us to think outside the box and to be different in our artworks. Camryn Brown 7SSI found it very interesting how much time Alison spent on her work to complete it. It was fascinating to learn about her experiences as an artist. Emma Hislop 7SS

A VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE

Virtual Reality (VR) is the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors. Precipice VR (a mobile virtual reality laboratory) visited St Aloysius College to deliver learning

When it was my turn to put the goggles on I was a bit scared on how it would make me feel, but I was excited to try them on. As soon as I put the goggles on it felt as if I was actually there! I felt as if I had so much room to run around in even though I had a small space in reality. We got to see the Mars rover which takes the photos on Mars. As soon as I took the goggles off, it felt as if I had been to Mars and straight back. Rebekah 5JV The virtual reality was astonishing. I felt like I was really on Mars. I was jumping on the rock and saw the space rover. Everything was in real life perspective, everything was life sized. It was the best bit of technology I have ever seen. Ella Gardner 5JVIt was really cool because we held a little controller and we pulled a lever and we were able to paint in the air and the space around me. I chose rainbow colours and I could see it on the screen and in the goggles but not after in the air. Alexis Harris R-KRI used the rainbow paint brush and it was so much fun. I drew a smiley face and a fairy. I felt like a fairy flying in rainbows while I was painting it. I was shocked when I saw my picture on the screen and not in the air. Ella Campbell R-SO

SECONDARY SPORT CHANCERY LANE - MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOL

It has been a busy few weeks at Chancery Lane Montessori as all the children prepared for our Father’s Day celebration. Leading up to the special celebration, the children were busy creating their surprise presents for their dads as well as rehearsing a few songs to perform on the day. They were very good at keeping all the details a surprise for their dads and grandpas. We celebrated the event over two days, and each family kindly brought in a plate of yummy food to share for afternoon tea. The children, their dads and grandpas enjoyed this scrumptious feast under the veranda, whilst some of them enjoyed a game or two together in the garden. This special Father’s Day celebration provided an opportunity for all the respected and loved father figures to enjoy some special moments with their children in our Montessori Preschool, a place where they have fun learning and exploring.

Languages students in Years 9 and 10 celebrated their language studies once again this year over two separate Thursdays in Weeks 2 and 4 this term. During LOTE Day, each of the four languages showcased their cultures and engaged their students in activities that included a guided tour of the Italian masters at the Art Gallery, Chinese calligraphy, an Indonesian shadow puppet show and a game of petanque in the parklands.

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

We started the day with a presentation by the French Exchange students. where they shared with us their life in France and also showed us a few songs that are currently popular in France. We then walked to the Art Gallery of South Australia, to view a range of French artworks. Our guide spoke to us in French and we were able to utilise the art vocabulary that we had learnt in class, the previous week. It was very interesting to see the artworks that we had studied in real life. C’est super! After the tour, we then walked to a little restaurant called ‘Carpe Diem’, where we ordered our meal in French. Everyone had a lovely time, enjoying a variety of delicious crêpes and chatting with our French friends. Thank you to Ms Julie Barletta for giving us this amazing opportunity to immerse ourselves in French culture. C’était très fantastique!Jasmine Dallimore & Danielle Allerby 10BM on behalf of the Year 10 French classBonjour! On LOTE Day, the two Year 9 French classes combined and celebrated French culture by immersing ourselves in the traditions of France, including being accompanied by our French Exchange students. The highlight of the day was a cooking demonstration of escargot with ail (garlic) and persil by Madame Zavahir. To wash down our escargot, we had croissants with Bonne Maman jam. We also made a trip to the Adelaide Central Market where we had to complete activities following French instructions. At lunch, we were able to try an assortment of French cheeses, quiches and crusty baguettes. Miam! Our day concluded with a competitive tournament of pétanque at the Adelaide Pétanque Club. Ashley Khemlani 9PA, Donna Reynold 9RF & Ria Agarwal 9PA (Year 9 French students)On Italian Languages Day, we went to Central Market, to the Art Gallery and the Migration Museum. In Central Market, we were given $10 to look for an ingredient that we would then all put together to make an Italian feast. Everyone had to find the food they were given and then we got back to school and put them all together to eat. The teachers bought pizzas for us all to share for lunch and when we finished eating, we left the school to go to the Art Gallery and the Migration museum. At the Museum, we learnt about the lives of Italians and why and when they came to Australia. We learnt about what it was like for them in Italy and why they came to work here. At the Art Gallery, we looked at some art works done by famous Italian artists and discussed what the paintings meant and what they were trying to show us through their art. This term, a group of dedicated Year 7 students has been meeting each Tuesday at lunch time to create bracelets for Mercy Day. They have used colourful beads made from gumnuts, which were hand painted by the women of the Pipalyatjara and Kalka community in South Australia.

The girls also used semi-precious beads such as coral, howlite and lava stone to create dozens of beautiful bracelets which will be for sale on Mercy Day in late September.
