MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAYWEEK THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY

Over the last fortnight, Year 11 students have been choosing their student leaders for 2017. Applying for a position involves a written expression of interest, an interview with the Principal, Deputy Principal and Year 11 Coordinator, voting by staff and voting by students. These four components make up a rigorous selection process. The Year 11, 2016 cohort is extremely motivated and committed and the quality of applicants was outstanding. Their capacity to articulate our Mercy values and the many memorable moments they shared with us during the interviews, speak volumes about the strength of the Class of 2017. As I told the girls, each of them will no doubt be a leader next year, whether or not they are chosen to be a member of the SRC Executive. The beautiful art work on display in the foyer is the culmination of a wonderful year’s work by our Year 12 Art and Design students. Reading the Artist’s Statements posted alongside each piece, it is clear that every student has created something of deep personal significance to them and it is a privilege to celebrate their insight and skill. The encouragement and development of their skills and talents has taken place throughout their school years, some since Reception, and I thank all the teachers who enable our students to think critically and express their ideas with such flair and grace. As we prepare for 2017, our Finance Committee has been working hard to prepare a budget for the year ahead. We always aim to provide students with optimal facilities and resources. This year, one of our main intentions in planning was to minimise our fee increases across the school, as we appreciate the many financial challenges facing families today. When you receive the detailed fee information this term, you will notice that the tuition fee increase has been limited to 3% and other charges have been kept at 2016 levels. As always, if you have any concerns in relation to payment of fees, do not hesitate to contact our Business Manager, Mr Steve Andrews.

Rehearsals are in full swing for the SAC Spectacular. As well as the dedication and hard work of staff and students, there is considerable excitement and anticipation, especially in the primary classes. It was inspiring to hear our current Year 11 students speak of the Spectacular as one of the highlights of their school years, a chance for a whole year level to come together in a creative and fun performance. Good luck to all our senior students as they complete their final assessments for the year and we look forward to celebrating a great year with you at the Entertainment Centre.

This week has been an extremely busy one for Year 11 students. Students have been completing final assessment tasks for each of their subjects and revising thoroughly for their upcoming examinations. Semester 2 examinations will be held from Wednesday 16 November to Friday 25 November for all Year 11 students. Monday 14 November and Tuesday 15 November are personal preparation days (Swotvac) and students are not expected to attend school, provided they have completed all course requirements for each of their subjects. Students were provided information regarding examinations at the most recent Year 11 assembly and via the parent letter sent home. Please remind your daughter of the following points: • During the examination period, students are only required to

attend school when they have an examination scheduled. • Students are expected to be at school at least 30 minutes prior to

each examination. • All students are required to wear correct summer uniform. If your daughter is unable to attend an examination, it is important that you notify the SAC Office as soon as possible, preferably on the morning of the examination. Best of luck to all Year 11 students as they prepare and undertake final examinations for 2016.

The students from Year 11 Biology classes travelled to Port Noarlunga to gain a better understanding of marine ecosystems. Students were presented with information by the Port Noarlunga Aquatics Centre and had the opportunity to go snorkelling on the reef and observe marine life.

Mr Michael BerardYEAR 11 BIOLOGY TEACHER

The Biology excursion to Port Noarlunga was a fantastic and eye-opening experience. We started with a walk along the beach where we cleaned up rubbish, which was a great way to help our local environment. We also learnt about other effects people can have on the environment, such as overfishing and removing elements of the reef from their natural environment and the impacts this had on local species. Being able to snorkel along the reef was really fun as we were able to see first-hand the organisms that we have been learning about in an exciting way. Chelsea Andrew 11NR

SECONDARY SPORTGRANDPARENT’S & ‘GRANDFRIENDS’ DAY!In order to highlight the special bond between grandparents and their grandchildren, the library staff held a morning tea for the grandparents and ‘grandfriends’ of our Reception students. The response was wonderful with 80 visitors joining us in the library where they had the opportunity to meet each other before being joined by their granddaughters. Together they made a personalised bookmark, shared stories and had a family photo taken in the photo booth. A school tour gave them an insight into the rich history of St Aloysius College with visits to the cloisters and chapel, playground and pool, gamelan room, Judith Redden Centre and the gymnasium. The tour ended in a visit to their granddaughters’ classrooms where they could meet their class teachers and see the wonderful learning space that the girls enjoy. This was the first time that the event has been held and judging by its success, we look forward to hosting it again in the future.

SECONDARY SPORT FESTIVAL OF LIGHT (DIVALI)Divali is the Festival of Light celebrated by Hindus around the world. For Divali, many Hindus make special patterns on the ground outside their front doors as a sign of welcome. These are called rangoli patterns. They are bright and colourful and are made from sand, rice and flowers. Students from 2LI used coloured chalk to create their own rangoli designs in the Dunlevie courtyard.

PRIMARY SPORTPrimary sport is in full swing with basketball, beach volleyball lacrosse and water polo all starting in Weeks 2 and 3 of Term 4. It has been great to see the students begin the competitions full of enthusiasm and commitment.

AFTER SCHOOL SPORT TERM 3

iMPORTANT NOTICES!

Beach VolleyballThis term we have nine teams representing SAC in the Spikezone Beach Volleyball Competition held on Thursday evenings. Unfortunately, a number of other school teams have withdrawn from the competition this term which, at this stage, means most weeks SAC teams will be playing other SAC teams. It is hoped more schools will be involved in the competition in Term 1 next year. Within the first two weeks, our secondary coaches have already displayed excellent leadership skills and enthusiasm towards coaching their teams. Good luck to all the teams and the secondary students who are coaching for the Term 4 season.

ReminderA reminder to all players and parents that compulsory training is held every Wednesday at lunch in the gym. Students are required to check their school email regularly for updated fixtures and ensure information is passed onto parents. Please also check the draw for game times. Please ensure you are aware of when the last SAC game finishes for the collection time of your daughter.

BasketballThis term fifty Year 3-6 students are participating in basketball clinics. These aim to introduce new students to the sport in preparation for competition next year in Term 1. The clinics also provides an opportunity for more experienced players to further develop their skills.

ReminderA reminder to all players and parents that students are required to be collected at 4:15pm. Any student not collected by 4:25pm will be taken to OSHC.

Water PoloThe water polo clinics for Years 5 & 6 students began in Week 3 on Tuesday afternoons. In the first two weeks the students have been introduced to the various skills, techniques and rules of water polo and are moving towards implementing these in game play. The aim of these clinics is to adequately prepare Year 5 and Year 6 students who may wish to continue playing water polo in the secondary sports program.LacrosseLacrosse clinics started on Tuesday lunch of Week 3 and will conclude on Tuesday of Week 7. It has been great to see so many students eagerly participate each week and I hope that many of the students continue playing lacrosse next year in the Term 2 & 3 competition.

A reminder to all parents that student absences from any of the above sports and trainings must be communicated directly to Ms Kate Marks in advance via the contact details below.

LEARNING SELF DEFENCE!As part of the Year 10 Physical Education curriculum, Nicole Wedding’s class is learning the techniques and skills of Self Defence. These students have been taught simple ways of defending themselves and getting out of tricky situations if they can. This unit is not about attacking others, it’s about reacting to the situation we hope none of these students will ever be in. The students have covered punching, jabs and crossed, kicks, escaping from being held and learning grappling skills on the ground. They have thoroughly enjoyed it and a big thank you must go to the instructors of The Academy of Self Defence and Martial Arts for their excellent guidance

On Friday 4 November the achievements of the 2016 Year 12 Art and Design students were celebrated at the opening of the annual Year 12 Art Exhibition in the school’s foyer gallery. Parents, friends and family joined together to admire the stunning works on display and congratulate the twelve very talented young artists and designers. The exhibition was opened by old scholar Miranda Harris. Her eloquent words describing her and her sister Claire’s journey in the arts were inspirational. Like the Year 12 students, Miranda and Claire’s creative skills and passion for the Arts were sparked by their schooling at SAC. Their love of the Arts has led them to exciting opportunities in Australia and overseas, such as producing documentary films (Claire) and being part of Phillippe Genty’s creative team (Miranda). They now work together in Adelaide inspiring others in their Art Bus, a mobile art studio that travels around the city providing access to creative learning through the arts while also advocating for art in education, disability and community sector collaborations. The Art Bus brings art to the community and believes lives are transformed through creative experience. The 2016 Year 12 Art and Design Exhibition opening was a wonderful night and I would like to thank the 2016 Art and Design students for sharing their beautiful final work and all the people that helped create such a stunning exhibition and wonderful night.

CHARLI’S JARS FOR CAMBODIA

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATIONOn Wednesday 26 October, 24 students celebrated their Sacrament of Reconciliation with Fr Dan Harding and Fr Peter Dunne of the Adelaide Cathedral Parish. Beforehand, students prepared through their Religious Education classes and a workshop on Tuesday 18 October run by myself. On the night, the students began and ended the Rite of Reconciliation with wonderful singing of hymns, listening to the Parable of the Forgiving Father, an examination of conscience, followed by being presented by parents or family members to the priests for their individual reconciliation. It was a special time of reflection and discussion with priests about ways that they could make better choices, receive absolution and be reconciled. Each student was presented with a certificate by Paddy McEvoy and Christine Simpson to commemorate this occasion. Thank you to teachers Eloise Griffiths, Nadia Costantini, Tenielle Nuske; Paddy McEvoy and Christine Simpson; Fr Dan and Fr Peter and families for their support.

Ms Sandra SofiaRELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

Reconciliation was great. Before our Reconciliation we did a workshop and got a booklet to do and it was fun. When we went to St Francis Xavier Cathedral I was nervous but the priests were really chilled and nice. We got a certificate at the end. Sienna Kellermann Clarke 3EGI was nervous but when I went to the priest I was not so nervous anymore. In the end it was fun! Alana O’Reilly 3EGIt was Reconciliation and honestly I was so nervous. We got there and I sat down waiting for my turn. My seats were swapped and that got me more nervous! I went up and all my nerves went away so I told the priest everything and it was all better. It was quite fun! Niamh Wells 3EGWhen I did my Reconciliation at the start I felt a little nervous but in the end when it finished I said to myself “Well there was nothing really to be nervous about”. I enjoyed it very much. Ellayna Hails 3EG

Last Saturday 5 November, Charli Thompson 10AW conducted herself and represented the school so well that we didn’t want this to go unnoticed.

Rather than being out enjoying the sun, she spent her Saturday at the John XXlll Craft Market in Modbury selling her hand-crafted jars to raise funds for her trip to Cambodia with World Challenge.

Well done Charli. Good luck!

SECONDARY SPORT CHANCERY LANE - MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOL

After numerous observations of the children’s continual interest in construction vehicles, a Community Walk to one of our local construction sites was organised. The children have enjoyed role playing with the trucks in the sandpit as well as the ‘small world’ construction scene, where they can explore different types of miniature trucks, signs, logs and other loose parts. By referencing a picture guide on the different types of trucks, the children were soon able to pick out and name some of the trucks that were working at the construction site. This real life experience allowed the children to observe the vehicles at work digging, scooping, transporting, and dumping. The children listened to the Site Manager talk about their work site and what occurs each day.

Upon returning to preschool, the children had a great time mirroring the construction site in the sandpit, where they used the excavator to scoop and transfer sand into the dump truck, and drive around the pipes carefully as they tried to “build a tower all the way up”, just as they had seen at the construction site.
