Saclay at D0 (run I) : the origins

– 1983 : Armand Zylberstejn is already in the US, on the K0 experiment with Jim Cronin

Yves Ducros works on Cello in Desy Armand meets Paul Grannis, Yves meets Bernie Pope.

– 1984 : Decide participation of Saclay to D0, to make the Transition Radiation Detector

• Meeting at MSU

The infancy

– Review Committee : Armand convinces his audience by showing the telex

« Accepted by CEA » from Saclay director M Banner… And it is real!

– We (AZ, YD, BM, J Teiger…) start to discover all about TRD. • Rather fascinating:: multi-foil interference, imperfect

radiators,

– Prototypes at Cern: test different radiators (Li, polypropylene foils and fibers)

The analysis of these tests will be the first Thesis in D0 : Fabrice Feinstein

– Design of the 3 layer TRD for D0, beginning of construction 1986

Growing up is not always easy

• Seen from Saclay, the beginning of D0 was not always easy and peaceful….– Delays for the first run : sometime in ‘87 or ’88, AZ and YD send a telex to

D0 , « Saclay : ‘89 or bust! »

• …the first run took place in ’92…and we did not bust, wisely! – But from time to time, we would hear a rumor that « D0 will never fly » !!!Then at the next collaboration meeting we found the collaboration working like ~usual… rather strange…

• But we keep constructing the detector

Grown-up TRD

• The detector is finished…

• We test it thoroughly on a beam at Cern– For this we need Xenon… We quickly discover that a USSR group sells black-market Xenon. We hide the bottles with Xenon in Cyrillic characters.

Data, anyone?

• The TRD is shipped to Fnal in ’88. It will remain as delivered for almost a year…then it gets inserted

• During this time, we get into the D0 software. At that era, the fashion is SASD.

As others, we do our best to make bubbles…

• But Armand cannot keep quiet and refrain from acting… quickly he gets sanctionned: forbidden from touching the D0 library…(but even now he claims « I did not do it »)

Data, at last

• First run 1992 !!

• We struggle with electronics , coherent noise, oscillations…

• True enough, we now know that M(top) > M(W) , which makes the TRD less central to the top analysis. Where it is needed (low pt electrons), b-jets are narrow, and the TRD gets easily crowded…

• But we do our best to bring a safe e-ID for the top analysis…

The rest is History…

• The top is discovered in 1995

• Saclay is very proud of having been part of it (the only French group …)– J Alitti, L Chevalier, Y Ducros, J-F Detoeuf, F Feinstein, J-F Glicenstein,

D. Hubbard, J-F Lebrat, P Mangeot, BM, A Pluquet, J Teiger, A Zylberstejn

• Thank you so much to our friends and their hospitality! Among (many) others:

– Paul Grannis, Gene Fisk, Bob Lanou…. For D0– Horst Wahl, Vasken Hagopian, Henryk Piekarz

for the TRD team…

• And many cheers to D0 run II…
