Fr. Alex Gaitan, cmf

To dust we return

This is a phrase we hear regularly during Lent, but this week Father Theo Fuentes reminds us of the fragility of life and how we have to be pre-pared for that face-to-face encounter with God, Our Father. That reminder of our mortality, is a message that takes us out of our selfishness by reminding us what the ancient Toltecs, Incas and Mayans already knew: this life is a dream and who dies awake to true life. This concept of life as a dream is also found in European cultures. The Spanish writer Pedro Calde-rón de la Barca (1600-1681) wrote a book entitled "Life is a dream". For Christians this idea invites us not to spend all our lives dreaming, but living the Gospel in this life. Thus we prepare ourselves to awaken to eternal life.

That saying "dust you are and dust you will become" gives a message that carries the image of the land that is submitted to cultivate. From the dust of the earth comes life. And as we have seen some-times, the earth is burned so that from its ashes more life comes. Thinking and reflecting on death does not mean that we despise our life but to awaken us to assume life as Jesus did from the cross. In that way we will be cultivated by submitting the dust of our body to give eternal life in Christ.

Father Theo has been a very significant pres-ence in the Mission of San Gabriel, for that reason we recognize him like that fertilizer so that this par-ish grows healthy, flourishes and gives better fruit. Father Theo has been a symbol of faith and hope for our community of faith. He has inspired and im-pelled us to faithfully follow Jesus, the Church and God. It is precisely for this reason that we thank God for giving us the opportunity to have Father Theo among us, to get closer to God and to be able to live God´s will in our lives. Thank you Father Theo and the best of our wishes on your way back to the Fa-ther's House and eternal life.
