WALKWAY CROSSES

Each cross in the walkway between the two worship sites represents a year since the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision by the United States Supreme Court that legalized abor-tion. Let us continue to pray for all those involved: dis-cerning legislators, pregnant women in crisis, and chil-dren who were not given a chance for a future. 3

DID YOU KNOW? Children and Youth Programs implemented throughout the Archdiocese of LA Published on 9/24/2018 Every year, students at Catholic elementary and high schools, religious education, confirmation and youth ministry programs in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles receive age-appropriate child abuse prevention and re-porting training. The “Empowering God’s Children Pro-gram” is designed for Kindergarten through 12th grade students. This program teaches children and young peo-ple to understand appropriate and inappropriate bounda-ries and gives them the tools that empower them to take action and report if they feel uncomfortable, scared or confused. More than 1.4 million students have attended these programs since 2004. For more information, visit: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/safeguard/Pages/education.aspx

Paz, P. John

For those of us who read our bulletin carefully, we see that we have not met the budgeted amount for Offertory since the new pastoral team arrived. We need $15,000 per week in the Offertory in order to offer the services and programs that you have become accustomed to. Since I arrived, the Offertory has been averaging about $11,500 per week; this past weekend it dipped to an all-time low of $10,700—which is only 71% of what we need. The Pastoral Team and the Finance Council have come up with a three-point plan to address this challenge. During the month of October, we will introduce a new and improved on-line giving system. You will now be able to go to our website home page to register. On-line giving includes both credit card payments and direct with-drawal from your checking account. You decide the amount you would like to give each week or month, fill out the form, and we do the rest! You can also use on-line giving for one-time gifts. On October 21, members of the Pastoral Team will visit every Mass, to thank you for your past generosity, and ask you to prayerfully consider increasing your con-tribution to the Offertory. Whether you give $3 or $30 a week, it will take all of us to increase our giving in order to meet our budget. A good way to examine our giving might to be compare it with how much money we spend on entertainment, alcoholic beverages, or even coffee each week. And finally on the weekend of October 28/29, we will have Commitment Sunday. At the Masses you will be asked to commit, in writing, to an Offertory contribution going forward. The commitment cards are designed in such a way that we will know who made pledges, but will not know how much they pledged. Our goal is twofold: to collect current information on our current parishioners and to see how much we can expect in the following weeks. There will be no follow-up to monitor if you are being faithful to your pledge. This is an honor system--and we appreciate that sometimes circumstances change and best intentions cannot be met. Although it is uncomfortable to address money issues so early in my tenure, I know it is necessary, some might say crucial, for our future. Thank you again for your generosity in the past. I am confident that together we can meet this challenge for the good of the Mission! Peace, Fr. John

FAITH FORMATION UPDATES 626-988-9288 Connie Perez, Georgina Mayorga

Faith Formation Corner

Three Ways to Walk Jesus’ Path The magnificence of Heaven is simply beyond our com-pression. Our limited minds can’t imagine how amazing it is. Jesus came to tell us about it and show us how to get there. He hoped we would follow in His footsteps and do what he did. Serve others with love, Jesus asked us to love one an-other as he did. Some of the ways He showed love were to treat strangers kindly, tend to the material needs of the needy, lend an attentive ear, help people make good virtuous decisions that bring them closer to God. Try to show love in these ways daily. Lighten your load. Not only did Jesus have few materi-al goods, He sent His disciples out to preach with al-most nothing. He didn’t want them - or us - to get dis-tracted, Jesus knew that the more we have, the more we’d think about our stuff and the less we’d think about God. Consider shedding what you don’t need and buy-ing only items that replace what is worn out or broken. Give the money you save to a favorite charity. Quiet Down. Jesus frequently went off to be alone with God. Take some quiet time each day just to keep com-pany with God. Even spending as few as 15 minutes a day with God in silence will bring you peace. *************************************************

Reflection - Thoughts to Ponder, Ways to Live

Seven Steps to Happiness Think less, feel more.

Frown less, smile more. Talk less, listen more.

Judge less, accept more. Watch less, do more.

Complain less, appreciate more. Fear less, love more!

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Cooking Up Some “FUN” in Transitional Kindergarten

Mrs. Breitschwerdt and her “little chefs” have been “cooking up” some delicious food and snacks as Mission Elementary kicks off a new after school cooking class. Our students may think that they are just having fun, but really it helps to lay the foundation for basic math concepts, developing healthy eat-ing habits and learning the concept of sequencing by following the various steps of recipes. We love and appreci-ate our wonderful teachers and staff who share their knowledge, talents and skills and enable Mission Elementary to create a nurturing, fun and educational space for our students.
