Holy Orders confers on men a sacred power for the service of the faithful, a power for the

service of the faithful, a power that comes to them from Christ through his church.

Group 1The 1st Century

were present• Men and women performed specific duties or a particular

charism which means a person has a gift or talent for this role• It became common to elect a leader to coordinate activities.• Bishops became “overseers” • Deacons or “servants” assisted the bishops• From the beginning a SHARED MINISTRY

• Service was stressed over power and authority• Mutual decision making between clergy and

community • Shared responsibility between clergy and lay

Broadening of Ministries of the Church

• Roles traditionally filled by priests are now being done by nuns, deacons, lay people.

• Does not dimish the role of the priest which is to teach, preside at the sacraments and govern in the name of Jesus.
