History
• Group Work!• 4 groups• Summarize for class the role of the clergy
during that time and how it changed
Group 1The 1st Century
• Casey, Kirsten, Andrew & ?• In the early Christian communities many types of ministries
were present• Men and women performed specific duties or a particular
charism which means a person has a gift or talent for this role• It became common to elect a leader to coordinate activities.• Bishops became “overseers” • Deacons or “servants” assisted the bishops• From the beginning a SHARED MINISTRY
Group 2 2nd Century to 6th Century
• Amber, Brooke, Kathryn, Austin• Church leadership became more specialized • Ordination rites developed for each type of ministry• By the end of the period priests and bishops gained more
power• Role of deacon was absorbed into the functions of the priest• Priestly ministry became more associated with worldly power • Bishops were delegated more responsibility to keep priests in
order • Priests acted like judges and counselors in the Roman
government
Group 3 The 6th Century to the Reformation
The class of the clergy
• Emily, Val, Feda, Ma’Rae• Bishops and priests became set apart from the
rest of the church• The priesthood began to mirror monastic life• More sacraments became under the realm of
the clergy.• The laity become more passive observers in
public worship
Group 4/Reforms with the Council of Trent
• Anthony I, Arianna, Will, Mikaela• The priests and bishops were corrupt• After the Council of Trent they had better
educated clergy.• Seminaries were established• Bishops had to live in their diocese
Vatican II/1960s
• Service was stressed over power and authority• Mutual decision making between clergy and
community • Shared responsibility between clergy and lay
people..work together• Permanent deacon role was revived and now
open to married men
Broadening of Ministries of the Church
• Roles traditionally filled by priests are now being done by nuns, deacons, lay people.
• Does not dimish the role of the priest which is to teach, preside at the sacraments and govern in the name of Jesus.
