Holy Communion preserves the supernatural lifeof the soul by giving the communicantsupernatural strength to resist temptation, and byweakening the power of concupiscence. Itreinforces the ability of our free will to withstandthe assaults of the devil. In a formal definition,the Church calls Holy Communion "an antidote

by which we are preserved from grievous sins"(Council of T rent, October 11, 1 55 1).

` Holy Communion increases the life of

grace already present by vitalizing our supernatural life and strengthening thevirtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit wepossess. To be emphasized, however,is that the main effect of Communion isnot to remit sin. In fact, a person inconscious mortal sin commits asacrilege by going to Communion.

Holy Communion cures the spiritual diseases of the soul by cleansing it of venial sins and the

temporal punishment due to sin. No less thanserving as an antidote to protect the soul frommortal sins, Communion is "an antidote by whichwe are freed from our daily venial sins" (Council of T rent, October 11, 1 55 1). T he remission of venialsins and of the temporal sufferings due to sintakes place immediately by reason of the acts of perfect love of God, which are awakened by thereception of the Eucharist. T he extent of this

remission depends on the intensity of our charitywhen receiving Communion.

` Holy Communion gives us aspiritual joy in the service of Christ, in defending His cause, in

performing the duties of our stateof life, and in making thesacrifices required of us inimitating the life of our Savior.
