WHAT DOES A PARISH SPONSOR DO?
A parish sponsor for one of our RCIA catechumens is someone who wants to share their faith in Jesus Christ. They do this by building a friendship with their catechumen and modeling what it means to be a Christian who follows Jesus. Some sponsors regularly attend the RCIA sessions on Sunday morning. Other sponsors may elect to spend time with their catechumen during the week, or go to coffee or lunch together. They also introduce their catechumen to their friends at Church or attend parish activities together. They will involve them in Church ministries, too. They especially pray for and with their catechumen. Bottom line, there are three tasks: Be present, make friends with your catechumen, involve your catechumen in the parish. Other requirement: Sponsors must be Baptized, Confirmed and receive Holy Communion. If they are married, they must be married in the Catholic Church. Contact Eileen Smith.

DAY OF THE DEAD ALTAR (ALL SOULS DAY)
MONDAY, OCTOBER 30 - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3
During the month of October, Mexico and other Latin American countries prepare for the celebration of All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). These two feasts are a mixture of ancient Christian rites and Meso-American devotions. They emphasize the fact that death is a natural part of the cycle of life and that the deceased are not forgotten by their loved ones. This is the basis of the Catholic devotion to the saints: God is God of the living and not the dead (Matthew 22:32) At the end of October and the beginning of November, families spend time in the cemetery, visiting the tombs of their relatives and friends, washing the head-stones, placing bouquets of marigolds, and lighting candles. This custom is similar to that of the Christian Romans who visited and did the same to the tombs of martyrs and relatives in the catacombs. Often we cannot go back to the tombs of our loved ones, so the custom of the altars of the dead has become important in our churches and homes. Many Latinos con-struct and adorn small altars and dedicate them to the souls of their loved ones who have died. On the altars are found decorated colored paper, photographs of the deceased, reli-gious articles, food, drink, and other things that the de-ceased enjoyed during their lives. These altars are testimony to the fact that deceased Christians do not forget us and we do not forget them either. The love of God unites us forev-er. The Restorative Justice ministry is in desperate need of Forever postage stamps for the supply of cards they currently have, which must be delivered to the correctional facilities by November. If you’ve been looking for a way to give back, this is a great place to start. The Diocesan Office of Restorative Justice / Detention Ministry exists to offer support and resources to the incarcerated. As OC Catholic writer Larry Urish reported in his Oct. 15 feature story “Caring for Everyone” (available online at occatholic.com), the largest collective Catholic population in Orange County is comprised of those in our local adult jail system and juvenile facilities. Urish wrote: “More Catholics are locked up in Orange County than the number of those who pray and serve at any other single locale in the diocese.” Donations can be dropped off or mailed to the Office of Restorative Justice at 1820 W. Durante el mes de octubre, en México y otros países latinoamericanos se preparan para celebrar el Día de Todos los Santos (1 Noviembre) y el Día de los Muertos (2 Noviembre). Estas dos fiestas cristianas se mezclaron con antiguos ritos y devociones mesoamericanas. Tales costumbres enfatizan que la muerte es parte normal del ciclo de la vida y que los difuntos no se olvidan de sus seres queridos. Esta es la base de la devoción católica a los santos, Dios es Dios de vivos y no de muertos (Mateo 22:32). A finales de octubre y principio de noviembre las familias pasan tiempo en los cementerios, visitando las tumbas de sus parientes y amistades, lavando las lapidas, poniendo arreglos de cempazuchitl (marigolds) y encendiendo veladoras. Esta costumbre es similar a la de los cristianos romanos, quienes hacían lo mismo en las tumbas de los mártires y parientes sepultados en las catacumbas. Con frecuencia los latinos no podemos regresar a las tumbas de nuestros seres queridos, razón por la cual el altar de muertos se ha convertido en algo importante en nuestras iglesias y hogares. Muchos latinos construyen y adornan altarcitos dedicándolos a las almas de sus seres queridos que han muerto. En los altares se encuentran papel picado y colorido, fotos de los difuntos, artículos religiosos, comida, bebida, y otras cosas que los muertos disfrutaban durante sus vidas. Estos altares dan testimonio al hecho que los cristianos difuntos no se olvidan de nosotros y nosotros no los olvidamos tampoco. El amor de Dios nos une para siempre.

El Ministerio de Justicia Restaurativa necesita desesperadamente estampillas de correo para el suministro de tarjetas, las cuales deben ser entregadas a las instalaciones correccionales para noviembre. Si has estado buscando una manera de apoyar, este es un gran lugar para empezar.
La oficina Diocesana de Justicia Restaurativa/Ministerio de Detención existe para ofrecer apoyo y recursos a los encarcelados. Como el escritor católico Larry Urish escribió en su artículo de octubre 15 (disponible en línea en occatholic.com), la población católica colectiva más grande del Condado de Orange se compone de ésos en nuestro sistema local de la cárcel del adultos e instalaciones de menores. Urish escribió: "más católicos están encerrados en el Condado de Orange que el número de los que oran y sirven en cualquier otro lugar dentro de la Diócesis".
