From the Pastor & Liturgy
FROM THE PASTOR
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE—Last weekend I talked about the connection between humility and steward-ship. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to be hum-ble and use our gifts, as good stewards, for the good of others. If you were not here last weekend, you can listen to my homily and invitation to pledge on the parish website or in THE HEARTBEAT. Eric Adams is our Stewardship of Treasure Witness Speaker at all the Masses this weekend. Eric and his fami-ly have been parishioners since 2015, Eric currently serves as the chair of our parish Finance Council. Please take some time, if you have not already done so, to pray and ask God to help you determine what is a propor-tional and planned amount that you can give as a house-hold for 2018. Remember that if you have made a pledge in the past, you still need to make a pledge for 2018. If you have any questions about your pledge, please contact Christine Kerr at the Parish Office at [email protected].
SACRED HEART PARISH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE ON TUESDAY—It is not too early to start thinking about next school year. Our parish school is having the first Open House of this school year on Tuesday, November 14, 5:30-7:00 PM at the school. There will be tour guides to lead people through the school. Please consider our ex-cellent parish school as an option for pre-K through 8th grade for next year. If you have any questions or are un- able to attend Tuesday’s Open House, please contact Su-sana Knapp at [email protected].
THE HEARTBEAT— Our new parish e-newsletter has launched. It is sent to all the email addresses that we have. If you did not receive THE HEARTBEAT, please send your email address to the parish. Also please like us (Sacred Heart Parish) on Facebook; we love to be liked. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart.
FUNERAL ON THURSDAY There will be a Funeral Mass for Jack Keefe on Thursday, November 16, at 9 AM.
POPE FRANCIS AND THE MASS On November 8, Pope Francis began a series on the Mass at his Wednesday audiences. He has been using his Wednesday audiences to teach about various aspects of our faith. Pope Francis said, “In the forthcoming catech-esis I want to answer some of the important questions on the Eucharist and the Mass, to rediscover, or to discover how the love of God shines through this mystery of the faith.”
MEMORIAL OF SAINT FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI
“St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first American citizen to be canonized. Born in Italy, she studied to be a teacher and wanted to join a religious community but was rejected be-cause of ill health. When the orphanage she managed closed in 1880, Frances and six others took religious vows and founded the institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her work brought her to the attention of Leo XIII, who sent her to New York in 1889 to minister to Ital-ian immigrants. St. Frances founded institutions all over the United States of America, as well as in South America and Europe. She died in Chicago in 1917. Visit her Chicago Shrine at: http://www.cabrinishrinechicago.com/.” (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 313) She is named after St. Frances Xavier, a Jesuit mis-sionary to India and Japan. St. Frances Cabrini founded a hospital (which was located near St. James Cathedral) and orphanage in Seattle (Villa Academy in Laurelhurst is where the orphanage was located). She attended Mass at St. James Cathedral when she lived here. We will have Mass on Mon-day, November 13, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini’s feastday, at 9:00 AM.
LITURGICAL MINISTER TRAINING Training sessions for new liturgical ministers have begun. If you have already registered to become a new liturgical min-ister or if you are interested but haven’t registered yet, please attend an upcoming training session. Training is in the church. Altar Servers: Saturday, November 18, 1-2 PM. Eucharistic Ministers: Thursday, November 16, 10:00-10:45 AM or Sunday, November 19 at 9:45-10:30 AM. Readers: Sunday, November 19, noon-1 PM. If none of the scheduled times for training work for you, please call the Parish Office and leave your name and phone number and someone will call you for training.
FLOWER DONATION Flowers were donated for the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time in memory of Hugh Byrne by his family and for this week-end in memory of Peter MacLean by his family. If you want to donate flowers in memory of someone or for a special occasion, just call the Parish Office.
PARISH BOOK OF THE DEAD You can write the names of deceased friends and loved ones in our parish Book of the Dead which is found near the bap-tismal font in the narthex. Please take some time to say a prayer for those who have died since November 1 last year that we prayed for.
LITURGY PLANNING: WINTER ORDINARY TIME

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Sacred Heart Conference
The Thanksgiving Day collection will be for the benefit of our St. Vincent de Paul conference at Sacred Heart. We depend on your generosity to
continue our work with the poor.
In the past year we have served 300 poor people and their families, that makes a total of 1.400 people who have benefited.
The needs are many and varied. We help with gas vouchers, rent, vouchers for food and clothing, purchasing needed furniture eg. a bed to sleep in, and utility bills.
We solicit donations of household items during the ‘Stuff the Truck’ weekends for the St. Vincent de Paul stores.
To connect with the poor and to better evaluate their needs, we will visit them in their homes, where we also have the opportunity to get to know them better in their own environment and to pray with them. We see the face of Christ in all those that we serve.
Please be generous. Donations may be made via:
1. Envelopes provided in your envelope package. 2. You may donate on-line through the website 3. You can give cash or check at the Thanksgiv-ing Day Mass.
New members are welcome to join St. Vincent de Paul. Contact– Colleen Meehan. 425-454-2392.

Administration & Stewardship
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE This week, we continue our annual renewal of Stewardship of Treasure, reflecting once again on stewardship as a way of life. By now, you should have received an important mailing from Fr. Steve. Please take a few minutes from your busy day, read his letter and review the attached commitment card. In prayer, reflect upon how God has blessed you and for what you are grateful. Then, in a spirit of generosity, consider how you will respond and return your 2018 treasure commitment card to Sacred Heart before Thanksgiving in the envelope provided. You can also complete a card on-line at our parish website, sacredheart.org. Last weekend, Fr. Steve’s homily focused on stewardship as a way of life. This weekend, November 11-12, Eric Adams, the chair of our parish Finance Council, will talk about what stewardship means to him and what your treasure pledge means to Sacred Heart. He will invite every registered household to make a financial commitment according to your means to the mission and ministries of our parish in 2018. There are many unique and important ways that the Sacred Heart community lives out our Catholic faith seven days a week within and beyond parish boundaries. Together, we offer and participate in numerous programs and services through the sharing of our time, talent and treasure. Without generous gifts of all three by every parish member, the ongoing work of our parish would not be possible.
SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING— PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN

THE BEST OF CYO ATHLETICS
When not enough boys turned out this season to field a Sacred Heart CYO 8th grade soccer team, the five boys
who did joined ten 8th grade boys at Holy Family in Kirk-land and together they won the CYO champion-ship this past weekend! Con-gratulations to the entire team! Sacred Heart is
grateful to Holy Family who welcomed our boys onto their team. It was a great example of parishes and schools working together for the benefit of the students.
