2015-2016 Sacred Heart School & Parish Annual Report

Sacred Heart School has been an integral part of our family’s life since 1998. All ofour daughters attended Sacred Heart: Katie graduated in 2004 and Jackie in 2007.Our youngest daughter Jenny will graduate this year, class of 2017. As parents wemake decisions on behalf of our children that take years to see the results and wedon’t truly understand the impact of our decision for decades. Due to the large agerange, we have the unique perspective to see firsthand the impact of our decision toeducate our daughters at Sacred Heart School.

Doug and Pati Cook

Academically, our older two daughters were well prepared for a rigorous, college prep high school.Spiritually, they graduated Sacred Heart with a deeperunderstanding of their faith and commitment to serve the community. Both have launched into adult-hood and credit their time at Sacred Heart as thebedrock of their success. We know that Jenny is well prepared to head to high school and beyond withthese same foundations of spirituality, community and academics.

It was and continues to be the belief in Sacred Heartthat drives our continued commitment with our time, talent and treasure. Over the years, we have served thecommunity in many capacities, some years we hadmore to give and others we did not. What we foundthrough this journey was amazing – the more wegave, the more we received. We know this soundscliché, but when we stepped up to do a job we wereasked to do, we walked away learning more aboutourselves and often with a new lifelong friend. Whenwe stretched to give to help others, our daughterslearned sacrifice feels good, especially when you arehelping others. Through our 18 years at SHS we havegrown in our faith, built friendships to last a lifetime, and watched our daughters flourish in a tight knit

community. This community has been there for us ingood times and in bad. When we had a sick child we felt the comfort of the entire community comingtogether to support and help us in whatever way weneeded – we will be forever grateful.

We were excited to make a commitment in the inaugural year of the School Sponsorship Program inour final year at Sacred Heart School. This was a new way to say thank you for all the blessings wehave received. We give to Sacred Heart in the hopethat all students will be blessed with the life-givingexperience our daughters and our family has enjoyed and their parents will see the benefit in theyears to come.

giving begins at home

Dear Sacred Heart Parish and School Community,We are pleased to highlight in this Annual Report how your generosity of time, talent and treasurehas furthered the mission and ministry of Sacred Heart Parish and School. The Annual Report of ourParish and School gives us an overall look not only at our financial picture, but a larger picture of whowe are as a community.

Your support and involvement has provided Sacred Heart with the ability to offer daily liturgies andpastoral care, sacramental preparation, faith formation and youth ministry, social outreach, communityevents and, most importantly, Catholic education.

We are blessed and fortunate to have a community of families and staff who believe in our Parishand Parish School and support it not only through their work and stewardship, but by means of financial contributions as well. This was apparent in the increased participation of our School’s AnnualFund last year.

Our parish now provides an Online Giving opportunity. This service provides a convenient, safe andsecure option to manage on-line giving to the parish and school. Sign-up by visiting our parish orschool websites and selecting the Online Giving link.

Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart Parish andSchool. Your contributions, your prayers, and your countless volunteer hours make Sacred Heart acommunity dedicated to faith, service and excellence.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr. Steve Sallis pastor David Burroughs principal

Notes to Financial Statement:

[1] Every year, the parish and school operating funds budget and transfer an amount to the parishand school capital fund. This recognizes the necessity to put aside money each year for major maintenance and repair needs as good stewards of our facility-related resources.

[2] The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) rebate is an important funding source for the capital fund.We received a rebate of nearly $5,000 from the 2015 ACA campaign, fulfilling your ACA pledgemade that possible.

[3] The interest from our Parish Revolving Fund general savings account with the Archdiocese isnow an important funding source for the Capital Fund. Also, in 2015-16, the Capital Fund receivedtwo special gifts totaling $125,000 from two generous parishioners. In addition, our parish Knightsof Columbus Council (#8136) contributed $500. Special gifts to the Capital Fund are always encouraged and gratefully received.

[4] During the summer of 2015, almost $241,000 was spent on refurbishing the school gym. Over$209,000 of this cost was raised through “Fund-a-Need” at the 2015 School Auction. The balancecame from the Capital Fund.

but who gave when they could giving time and talents. And so I discovered that it is perfectly okay to give the time when you have it. There is no expectation that when you say “Yes” it means 100%,all the time. Perhaps one month you are only able togive 60% but the next you have 95%...that is okay andwhatever time you have is always welcome.

After the futuring committee’s work ended, anotheropportunity came to me - to be a part of the Stewardship Commission. Having had recently beguna second Master’s Degree program, this one global innature, my life was even further challenged with a lackof time. But I said yes because Stewardship is a partof the parish I have much personal passion for. As youcan imagine, my time commitment ebbed and flowed.I missed some fun events and I probably made a fewpeople a bit nervous during some planning stageswith too much of a “just-in-time” approach than wasdesired, but my passion for what we were creating andthe enjoyment of working with amazing fellowparishioners helped pull me through.

That led to my 2nd discovery: Don’t underestimatethe power passion has in helping you find something–

like time - that you didn’t know you had. We have awide variety of ministries here at SHP and they canuse more time, talent, and passion from all of us. As you consider how you can participate more, I’d like to share an exercise I do quietly with myself occasionally.

I pause and observe myself through the eyes of mychildren. Like the impact that my mother left on meas a role model, I challenge myself to envision: Howdo I show up as a role model for my kids? What willthey speak about in 30 years when called upon intheir parish to provide this witness speech? I can onlyhope their memories and the examples of stewardshipI provide today will be as rich and impactful as mineare from my parents.

I know I have more to give to this parish and that ismy commitment for the coming year. I hope you willjoin me and together we will see how passion, time, talents and stewardship can have a profound impacton our parish, our own lives, and the lives of thosearound us.

Babaa Hagen

My name is Barbara Hagen. My husband Jeff and I, and our three children, have beena part of Sacred Heart Parish since we relocated back to this area three years ago. Our twin girls, Caitlyn and Morgan, are 11 years old and are 6th graders at SacredHeart School. You can often find them as altar servers here at mass. Our son, Tristan,is 7 years old and in 2nd grade at Sacred Heart School. You can find him singing withthe Sacred Heart Parish children’s choir.

Growing up, the Catholic church was central to my childhood. My family was always involved insomething with our parish and my mother was thekey driver of this. She is a French-Canadian whogrew up in Montreal in the late ‘40s and ‘50s. At thattime, about 98% of the city was Roman Catholic withover 200 churches on that tiny island. All schools, including public schools, were part of a parish. Forhigh school, my mother attended a Catholic boardingschool in Montreal contained within a Convent and fully staffed by nuns. Needless to say, mass andstewardship were a daily part of her life.

When my mother married and moved to the States, she brought all of her Catholic stewardship with herand included our whole family. At our parish, we werethe family that everyone knew. My older brother wasan altar boy – perhaps I’m dating myself but back thenthey were called altar boys as girls were not yet allowed to serve. But that changed quickly as my oldersister was so persistent with our priest, Fr. Major, tobe an altar server too, that eventually Fr. Major gavein and my sister became the first girl altar server inthe entire Syracuse, NY diocese. I followed in theirfootsteps quickly and was also an altar server as soonas I was able.

My family was always at the church, helping withparish events, attending family worship, helping in therectory, or participating with CYO sports. My motherpretty much sewed every altar cloth, liturgical stoleand vestments for the priests and parish. And Sunday

mass wasn’t something we had to fit into our schedule– it WAS our schedule!

I didn’t realize it then but my childhood years, and my family’s deep involvement with the parish, truly established the groundwork for the church andstewardship in my life.

In my early adult single years, I remained a pretty faithful and involved Catholic. With few responsibilities other than myself, I had time to be involved in my parishes in the different places I lived.I contributed in a variety of ways: as a reader, a catechist, greeter, etc. Soon though, my life responsibilities increased with work demands, a husband, and eventually kids and I saw my involvement with my parish begin to diminish. Mydesire was still there but I just didn’t know how tomake the time.

This story held true when I joined Sacred HeartParish. I wanted to become involved in the community here but I told myself I didn’t have thetime. So we attended Sunday mass but that was aboutit. Then, when Fr. Steve invited me to serve on theParish Futuring Committee and help build a five-yearplan for the parish, I said yes. Although to be honest, I had no idea how I was going to find the time, especially with a busy travel schedule. Butsurprisingly, I found the time when I could and whenI was traveling and unable to make a meeting, peoplewere understanding. I found too, that there were others on the committee who had time challenges

giving time and talent

Fundraising Highlightsschool

A Fundraising Year in ReviewDuring the 2015-2016 school year, Sacred Heart was able to “Raise Up” our school community through variousfundraising opportunities.

The Annual Gala Auction took place March 5th, 2016. The theme, “Raise ‘Em Up”, was a fun filled evening for ourcommunity to show their support for our school. We were able to raise up our paddles and bring in over $103,000to support the 2016 Kitchen Fund-a-Need. Thank you to those who attended the event, our sponsors and volunteers.

We had another opportunity as a Parish School to participate in the Larry Kring Challenge Match program. For thethird year, Mr. Larry Kring has provided an opportunity to increase donations to our School’s 2015-2016 Annual Fund. We are extremely grateful for his continued generosity and commitment to the success of our studentsand school.

Sacred Heart School families also participated in the GiveBIG campaign in May together with the Seattle Foundationto raise funds for our school.

Sacred Heart School was also able to give back to our community by raising over $7,500 and donating over 350pounds of food for various charities. These charities included:

Northwest Hope and Healing • Lupus of America • Eastside Baby Corner • Renewal Food Bank • HopelinkRonald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington and Alaska • Treehouse

We are grateful to celebrate our many giving opportunities over the past year. With the generosity of our parents, grandparents, students, alumni and parish community, we will continue to create a vibrant environment of faith whereour children can continue to learn and grow.

Annual Fundschool

Sacred Heart has been a beacon for our family since we arrived in Bellevue 38 yearsago. We had experienced both public and Catholic education in California and we selected the Catholic values for our children. We found a home at Sacred Heart andour three children benefitted from the education, values, and the respect gained inthe classroom and thus the training and preparation for successful lives.

Sacred Heart School Annual Fund donations can be made through the Development Office. The AnnualFund is essential in the operations of the school. It helps to sustain the school’s instructional programs and foster student learning and growth. This gift is an investment in the future of our students and Sacred Heart School.

Sacred Heart Endowment gifts reflect a commitment to provide a long-lasting legacy of quality Catholic education at Sacred Heart School for generations to come.

Charitable gift options can also include:

• Bequests, wills, living trusts or other non-charitable trusts• Charitable trusts• Remainder interests in residences, commercial property and real estate• Gifts of life insurance• Beneficiary designations in retirement plans• Transfer of appreciated securities

In 2011, our family’s life suddenly changed with the passing of our wife and mother. I was focused on a memorial gift in my wife’s honor andsubsequently met with Father Pat Ritter. Based uponour discussion, I chose a three-year period of contribution. However, after year three, I decided tocontinue the annual support and also to increase thelevel of contribution. My reflection on the value

of our family’s experiences led me to consider theneed to provide support just like those who came before us, the primary supporters who provided theopportunity for my family when we first arrived.Without them, we may not have had the opportuni-ties of 38 years ago, and it is my aim to ensure thatthose benefits extend to future generations.
